I dno about predictions but I’m on record as not freaking out yet. I find the freaking out to be concerning, but the total freaking out to be utter insanity.

The defense is bad, and UConn has 2 losses, at least one of which won’t age well.

Hurley effectively has to fix the plane while it is in the air. There are only bad options. Hoping Hurley picks the best bad option.

It’s a work in progress. This Maui trip was an audition for most of the team. Once a regular, solid starting five emerges and the bench minutes get established, we’ll be fine. I think Nowell being 100% is a factor. Remember, until today, he got mop up minutes, so the coaches are clearly assessing the team during bad refereeing. I cut slack.

I actually don’t think it’s that bad.

1. Drop Mahaney and Ross from the rotation.
2. Put a shock collar On Johnson everytime he fouls.
3. Plead with Ball to apply his natural gifts on defense.
4. Besides the forced 3, tell Nowell to play exactly like he did today.

Diarra
Ball
McNeeley
Karaban
Reed

Nowell/Stewart/Johnson. If Nowell can take a step and we can consistently stay in front of people, we might have a really solid team. But there’s no way we are a NCAA tournament team with Mahaney and Ross getting meaningful minutes at this point, nor with SJ starting. His proneness to fouls significantly hampers us at center. He just can’t start.

The individual defense is bad, but it feels like the team defense is worse. Reed forgets to switch, a lot. McNeeley is young, but he is bad defensively and never helps. There are times I can’t tell what defense UConn is playing because Ball and Stewy seem to be chasing the ball around the court.

I think this is a good team offensively, but it puts a massive amount of pressure on a team when it can’t get stops.

I’m confident The D will improve with practice (it can’t get any worse) but in terms of personnel I think the best case scenario is Nowell becoming our starting PG by conference play. It’s a Hail Mary but That gives us our highest ceiling. Hurley also needs to trim the rotation:

Nowell 20 / Diarra 20
Ball 25 / Ross 15
Liam 30 / Stew 10
Alex 30 / Stew 10
Reed 30 / Samson 10

I would mix in some junk defenses (1-3-1 or 2-2-1 or the like) right away just to give Hurley time to fix the man-to-man. Hurley’s back side help rotations have stumped UConn teams before, and UConn can not afford more losses.

Is Nowell a shooter? He missed the gym.
youve posted this on two threads now. He has a wrap on his wrist, and both threes he took in exhibition games had nice arc and went it.

I'm gonna double down on some Natty bets. I'm assuming our odds (which were around +1000 prior to Maui) have dropped to at least +2000 or worse now.

And it’s still #60 in KenPom. #3 offense which is waaaay harder for the new group to learn. Last years team had 2 years with it and add in a grad student genius in Cam.

I hope we dig this thread up in March.

We have two years of beating three bag off everyone coming at us head on. We have a ton of new parts from the last two seasons. My only concerns are:

1) Can we suffocate on team D? We lost Castle and Clingan and our foot speed isn’t elite. I trust the staff gets us there.

2) Can we get that offensive movement back where we get lots of easy set dunks and layups? Again. Losing Newton and Spencer (and Clingan who was a great passer) will be tough to fill. I trust the staff gets us there.

I’m less confident about this being a second weekend team.

The Clingan affect is really being put to the test this season.

If the issues aren’t addressed and fixed by Big East play, then that’s an issue. We’ll be fine.

People had waaayyyy to high expectations with this team. We lost arguably the best guard in UConn history and the best defensive player in the last decade+ of college basketball.

The team lost a ton. With the proper corrections we’ll be good
