152 of the top 300 football recruits are in these 4 states:

Texas - 54
Florida - 44
Georgia - 32
California - 22

There is something to be said for the B1G to want representation in these states.

I’m not sure a TCU or Baylor fits the B1G mold with UT and A&M off the table. Miami, Florida State and Georgia Tech on the other hand would be plausible.

Current B1G footprint:

Ohio - 10
New Jersey - 7
Maryland - 5
Illinois - 4
Iowa - 4
PA - 4
DC - 3
IN - 2
MN - 1
NE - 1
NY - 0
WI - 0

I could see a future where The B1G tries to go right down the East Coast adding by UVA, UNC, GT, & FSU. This gives them three AAU Schools to make the academics happy and allows the conference to plant a flag in a huge talent rich state with a program that can provide valuable content for media partners.

That is the desired next move. Going in to the Mid-Atlantic and south. Two state flagships, three AAU and even FSU is now a top 20 public institution and top 60 university (And yes, I am perfectly aware of the flaws in USNWR rankings).

If SMU joins the PAC-12 that will leave Rice as the only former Southwest Conference team not in a P5 conference --- if it can be called P5. It's more like P2 and Middle of the Pack 3 now.

Look at the money it is definitely P5. I would take the 50 to 55 million that the ACC and Big 12 and possibly Pac-12 are getting as well as their voting rights. It is still very much the Power 5.

SMU seems like such an odd fit. Why not take Rice, Tulane & Tulsa while they're at it.
