Years ago I read an article I can’t find. They followed SEC football players years after “graduation”. The gist was they wasted an opportunity to take an advantage of their college education and were broke. I wish I could find it. Perhaps the NIL will change that

Arguably though, we were pretty interesting then with the 33rd largest market in the country and a foothold in the largest cable market in the country.

Name a women’s college basketball team

The mean have a shot at being on the end of the second list. The women are #1 with a bullet on the third. Moreso than Alabama is for question 1. Wake Forest? Not in the top 50 on any of those three. BC? Nope. Iowa State? Yes the alumni size is weak for UConn. But the brand is not.

The fundamental problem is that your 3rd question about Women's College Basketball, is not even on the radar of most people in the country. So no matter how tremendous UConn women are, the market size simply doesn't move the needle.

College hockey (on average) brings in more money than womens basketball. And even the most dominant hockey program in the country does nothing in terms of leveraging an offer from a power conference.
 
All of a sudden, the ACC feals like the original Big East and I'm loving it. What goes around cones around and their original members like UVA and UNC are all looking out for themselves.

I think Uconn to the ACC, if they get raided, might make sense as strangely enough, we'll be reunited with the schools that didn't want us. BC, Pitt and Syracuse.

This is all very ironic and weird. Of course, it's also possible that we go no where, but that's what poor leadership gets you.

They had plenty of time to fix football and hiring Paul Pasqualoni and his exhaustive playbook put Uconn back 10 years.
 
Disco's recruiting set the program back. We can easily have a competitive football program again. Done it before.

I’d love to go somewhere else, but am also fine in the Big East.

Big East should at least contact a few Big12 schools and try to sell our model. KU and WVU would probably be the only ones I’d reach out to.

And yet the UConn women have out drawn other major sporting events including many men’s games and some pro games. Someone must be watching it.

The Big 10 will add UConn before it adds WVU. And believe me I'm not suggesting they will add UConn.

The argument that it’s irrelevant is as outdated as worrying about cable media markets. A colleague of mine moved to the Boston area from Austin. Her 11 year old daughter is a huge UConn basketball fan. From Texas. First thing she wanted to do was go to Storrs to see them. I really don’t think there is a college sports team aside from maybe Notre Dame football that has a broader fan base. Are they rabid? No, they are casual and that’s the downfall. But in a national streaming format, which is where we are headed, the sheer volume matters. The UConn women would outdraw over half the men’s teams nationally. Easy.

No idea how this shakes out. But I think they are a relevant advantage in this climate. Need football to be semi ok and need Hurley to get us into the top 25.

This guy pops up every few years and just makes wild predictions hoping one of them will come true. He has no inside knowledge unless he is a cable exec or has the contacts to talk to every university president (which he doesn’t)

The concept that Fox would consolidate its strongest assets to counter ESPN consolidating its strongest assets isn't exactly earth shattering.

How are UNC and UVA getting out of their ACC GOR before 2035? Magic?

On the other hand, it appears that the Big 12 GOR is not really a GOR if Texas and Oklahoma can write a check and leave.

By paying a $50M exit fee. I’m not saying they’re going anywhere, but it does seem like the Big 10 and SEC are on their way to becoming their own league. Think about it, if UNC and UVA go to the Big 10 and Clemson/FSU go to the SEC, what does the ACC have left? It would basically be the old big east + Duke lol

And then at that point the only programs left to scoop up would be USC, Stanford, UCLA, and Oregon.

Is there a $50MM exit fee from the ACC and a team can leave? I honestly have no idea. A Grant-of-Rights means that the league owns a school's media rights to the end of the contract, so I assumed that the ACC and Big 12 schools had no way out of their leagues, but apparently Texas and Oklahoma can pay a $75MM fee and leave the Big 12. I guess all GORs are not really GORs.

With the amount of money involved, nothing is ever concrete. Lawyers will always figure something out

If it is a true GOR, there is not much the lawyers can do. This is like selling your house, and then changing your mind 8 years later and seeing if the lawyers "can figure something out". That is not how it works. UNC and Florida have already sold their media rights. They can't just get them back because they think they can get a better deal somewhere else.

The Big 12's GOR doesn't appear to be quite a GOR as much as a very high buyout. We will see.
