QB Cole Welliver enters Transfer Portal

I sure hope they got this one right. I wanted to hand him the keys, but I don’t have any real reason to say that. It’s just a hunch based on very limited evidence. I just have this feeling he is like Casey Cochran in that he’ll be very cerebral out there and dissect a defense. A guy that is a gamer when the lights come on. Very disappointing.
 
This sucks. I remember watching the open practice last preseason, and it was obvious he had the best arm on the team and it wasn’t even close. Was really hoping he’d stick it out one more year, but Fagnano returning and having the upper hand on the starting role probably was enough to make his decision

It would have been hard to take the job from Fagnano, but it stinks if he’s leaving because he thought he deserved the job. He was the most talented passer on the roster and I could see him being frustrated. Honestly, I thought it was a bad sign in several ways when Evers decided to return.

How do you know he was the most talented passer on the roster? Maybe strongest arm, but if he wasn't reading defenses and moving the offense as Fagnano did, then he wasn't the most talented passer in 2025. In today's day and age, kids don't wait their turn. I don't begrudge him, wish him luck but each year is it's own year and a new qb will be in here next year to possibly run the team if McDonald or Farrar are not the guys.
 
All the coaches can control is making sure they’re playing the guy maximizing the team’s chances to win in any given year. If someone else isn’t good enough, no matter what the fan base thought of him based on recruiting ranking and offers, so be it. If someone is going to be good enough but isn’t willing to wait, it’s what it is.

Get the best players you can, pick the best ones to put on the field and win games. That’s all you can do at the moment.
 
I'm bummed. I was hoping to see what Cole could do but as always, I trust Mora and the coaching staff.

Its not as big of a deal since fagnano is back. The reality is that even if Welliver started this year and played well we'd probably be looking for a new QB the year after, anyway after some P4 program offered him a giant bag of cash. You can only focus on year to year rosters now.

That is ancient thinking. They are finally able to make some money on the value they bring to the school.

ESPECIALLY the guys that aren't sure fire NFL. Get it while they can.

Their degree isnt going to get you a salary even close to start.

Good for them.
