Some thoughts on the Providence game:
- Senior Day is always bittersweet. Other than Serah, the players honored today have missed so many games as a result of major injuries. Caroline, Ice, Ayana & Azzi’s contributions to UConn WBB are deeply appreciated. Assuming they all move on from UConn after this season, they will be missed. But what could have been had they been healthy for 4 full seasons at UConn?
- I suspect today’s starting lineup with 4 seniors and KK was a 1st time lineup for UConn this season. Who had Ayanna scoring the first point today? 🤩
- KK can be a nightmare for opposing pg’s. Today, I felt sorry for Gormley who was in way over her head trying to run the Friar’s offense with KK locking her up while chalking up a game-high 8 steals, to go with a personal record 10 assists.
- Before anyone suggests otherwise, be assured that Azzi’s 3/13 from the arc today was most definitely an aberration.........Senior Day Blues?
- Blanca looked more comfortable in her 2nd game back. She does a little of everything for UConn, and just needs to cut down on the turnovers.
- Strange 1st qtr by the Huskies. UConn forced 14 turnovers by the Friars, while shooting a miserable 2/14 from the arc. At the same time, with the Huskies shooting 36% for the qtr, Sarah hit all 4 of her shots, including a 3, as her quest to be the first player in the history of WBB to shoot 60/40/90 continues.
- Allie continues to look like she belongs. While she is a deadly shooter from the arc, I was particularly impressed with her defense today. It has improved significantly.
- While Geno has a deep 9-player rotation that he can use to deal with just about any situation he will face in the Big Dance, more and more I get the feeling that UConn’s MONEY ROTATION during the tournament will be Sarah, Azzi, KK, Ash and Blanca.
- It’s Ramadan, so Jana hasn’t eaten anything since sunrise today. Instead of food she was gobbling up rebounds, leading the Huskies with 16 boards. 🤩 😎 😁 🤯 😮
- UConn ties an alltime record forcing 39 Providence turnovers today.
- This coming Monday UConn will be ranked in the AP poll for the 620th consecutive week and the 655th week in total. While UConn’s consecutive streak has been a record for some time, the 655 weeks, all under Geno, will break a tie with Tara Vanderveer (tOSU & Stanford) for the most ever by an individual coach. This stuff never gets old.
