Some thoughts on the Providence game:
  • Senior Day is always bittersweet. Other than Serah, the players honored today have missed so many games as a result of major injuries. Caroline, Ice, Ayana & Azzi’s contributions to UConn WBB are deeply appreciated. Assuming they all move on from UConn after this season, they will be missed. But what could have been had they been healthy for 4 full seasons at UConn?
  • I suspect today’s starting lineup with 4 seniors and KK was a 1st time lineup for UConn this season. Who had Ayanna scoring the first point today? 🤩
  • KK can be a nightmare for opposing pg’s. Today, I felt sorry for Gormley who was in way over her head trying to run the Friar’s offense with KK locking her up while chalking up a game-high 8 steals, to go with a personal record 10 assists.
  • Before anyone suggests otherwise, be assured that Azzi’s 3/13 from the arc today was most definitely an aberration.........Senior Day Blues?
  • Blanca looked more comfortable in her 2nd game back. She does a little of everything for UConn, and just needs to cut down on the turnovers.
  • Strange 1st qtr by the Huskies. UConn forced 14 turnovers by the Friars, while shooting a miserable 2/14 from the arc. At the same time, with the Huskies shooting 36% for the qtr, Sarah hit all 4 of her shots, including a 3, as her quest to be the first player in the history of WBB to shoot 60/40/90 continues.
  • Allie continues to look like she belongs. While she is a deadly shooter from the arc, I was particularly impressed with her defense today. It has improved significantly.
  • While Geno has a deep 9-player rotation that he can use to deal with just about any situation he will face in the Big Dance, more and more I get the feeling that UConn’s MONEY ROTATION during the tournament will be Sarah, Azzi, KK, Ash and Blanca.
  • It’s Ramadan, so Jana hasn’t eaten anything since sunrise today. Instead of food she was gobbling up rebounds, leading the Huskies with 16 boards. 🤩 😎 😁 🤯 😮
  • UConn ties an alltime record forcing 39 Providence turnovers today.
  • This coming Monday UConn will be ranked in the AP poll for the 620th consecutive week and the 655th week in total. While UConn’s consecutive streak has been a record for some time, the 655 weeks, all under Geno, will break a tie with Tara Vanderveer (tOSU & Stanford) for the most ever by an individual coach. This stuff never gets old.

Can you imagine the score if Allie and Azzi shot anywhere near their normal 3 point shooting percentage?

I opined that teams were starting to adjust to the UConn press. Providence did not get the memo. Nearly 40 TOs. Yikes.

I feel bad for Sarah. That illness is lingering. Props to her though, she is still playing at a high level.

Same for Ayanna. Started, scored and returned to the bench and warm up sweats. At least CD got some good senior day run.

I understand Geno allowing Blanca to get back to game form. He is not showing as much patience with Serah. I wish he would.

Weirdly, KK is more effective wearing the mask.

Allie demonstrated comfort from NBA three point range.

I will take this version of Jana for the rest of the year. Happy for her.

I would much rather Jana tapping the ball back than trying to go over the back for a rebound.

It was great having Meg and Gary Apple call the game.

I thought it was an uneven game. Long stretches of average offensive execution. PC really ramped up the defense in the 2nd half. But UConn's defense was crazy. 39 turnovers for PC? Holy steal Batman!

Big shout out to our seniors, but what the heck with Patterson? In a 40 point blowout, she only gets the first 2 minutes of the game? Fisher played more minutes than she did. Surprised and disappointed in Geno for that, unless Ayanna was injured or sick.
  • Really off day for Azzi.
  • Sarah with some kind of inhaler or oxygen thingy on the bench?
  • El Alfy was a beast on the boards - 16 of them - holy cow!! She played more minutes than Williams, and deserved it.
  • I thought the trio of KK, Ash and Allie were really solid, especially KK with 10 assists and 8 steals!!
  • Nice game for Kayeigh too.
  • Blanca looked really solid even tho she didn't score a ton.
Bottom line a solid win. I keep waiting for this team to put it all together for 30+ minutes. Hopefully it will come.

I'd add a 3 thread just to be a nudge, but no.... Providence pushed beyond their comfort zone and it showed. Darn painful. And a little reckless, so I'm grateful for the lack of injuries. I'm also grateful for Jana, Allie and K9 surging as March approaches. Jana has grown comfortable and her game continues to grow. Allie's passing is pretty super and her shot, forget about it. K9 seems to always be in the right place. Difference makers. A nit, which could be wrong, but does Bianca tend to pick up her dribble when she's outside?

I don't think it is weird at all. I bet KK without the mask was thinking too much about protecting her nose. Put the mask on and then she can just focus on bball. If I was her, I'd just keep wearing it for the rest of the season. She can get her confidence back without the mask over the summer.

Pregame, Ayanna was listed as questionable

I don’t mean this to sound rude, I didn’t see the game as I recently canceled my directv, but has Serah progressed at all this year? For her to be in for 16 minutes and not score, but even more so to not get a single rebound…. I don’t quite understand it. Could someone who saw the game maybe explain something that I’m missing in looking at the box score?

You really can't make a lot of judgements in a game like that. Good thing Providence practiced breaking the press. Yikes, they looked like a HS team.
Serah Williams is playing herself out of starting if she doesn't start contributing more. No rebounds, shots, points....

Standing O for the seniors.

Providense stood no chance against our defense. There is no way to practice against the way we play D.

Jana showing what she can do. 16 boards, 6 points, 8 assists and 2 blocks.

The Masked Bandit was back!!!

Now everybody home safe and hunker down.

UConn turned it up today. Ash was all over the place. Allie is special she can do everything and do it well. Most of all she has a good head on her shoulders. Jana looks like she arrived. She needs more playtime to gain more confidence. We didnt shoot well but we played with high energy and intensity and that made us play a little to fast thus missed shots. Not getting set which is poise. I can live with our shots not falling against Providence but not against a top team. We looked like we got back on track.

This game should ease the nausea of the naysayers as it was a 43 point blow-out with 39 turn-overs, a team record. Uconn's defense is still the back-bone of this team getting to the Final Four and the Trophy. Geno will see to that. Kudos to Jana with 16 rebounds and no fouls. KK was masterful with 10 assists and 8 steals and irritating defense, I'm happy that Caroline got the minutes she did and proved she belonged. Allie is blossoming into a shooter to be counted on. The HUSKIES are in the feel of the March Madness and I have no qualms that Uconn will not win NO.13. GO GENO!!!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!

Serah is still working her butt off every game but it isn't translating to the box score. I'm wondering if she might have the same illness as Sarah and others.
She did have some minutes in the 4th quarter, so who knows.

What a game from Jana today really hunting down those rebounds. The next two games are going to be interesting as Jana is stepping up and making a case for herself and Serah is not. Great def today. I wish we had more info on Aya as I thought she would get more PT.

I'm not sure about any oxygen machine but Sarah and Azzi were using muscle massagers during the first half when on the bench....

Unfortunately, I think that Geno has the same questions you have. Add to the fact that Jana made an incredibly impressive statement today, which might just get her back in the starting lineup.

Tough game to watch. Providence is terrible. Can't be much fun for the team to play a game like that. Hard to believe that they (UConn) allowed the Friars 36 rebounds, and only won the rebound battle by 3. Every UConn player scored except UConn's starting center, that isn't good. On the bright side UConn forced 39 turnovers.
