After watching Seton Hall for three quarters before the UConn game started, we better hope that KK is starting Saturday. Today's starting guards seemed to be hesitant about who was going to bring the ball up and then would get rid of the ball whenever an opponent was near, leading to some bad passes. Something I really wonder about with UConn is how a player or two will come out and light up the scoresheet in the first quarter or half and then not be heard from the rest of the game. Or the opposite, little scoring in the first half and then go crazy in the second half.
I think Jana played pretty good. I just wonder how her opponents can beat her up, knock her to the floor or swarm her without committing a foul but if she breathes on her opponent, whistles galore. No wonder she doesn't seem as happy on the court this season versus last. She tries so hard.
I thought that with KK out today that both Ashlynn and Allie would have great scoring games by being really involved in bringing the ball up and starting the offense. Oops.

I know saying anything negative about our best player is like talking badly about the Pope in the Vatican, but 5 TO's in 23 minutes today and a recent game with 6 TO's??? What's going on ? Is she getting too comfortable and reading too many headlines? This is not the Sarah we saw all of last year and early this year.
 
Both UConn and South Carolina played Providence:

UConn AdjNet +56.7 Average Lead 21.3
South Carolina AdjNet +48.6 Average Lead of 13.1

Despite the sloppiness they still ended up putting up a better statistical perfomance and they can play much better than today.

I think everyone is chilling. But to pretend that this was a masterpiece game is being an ostrich (not saying that's you, just pointing it out). It was a solid win - a smackdown scoring wise, but there were a LOT of problems with how the team played. There were some good things too. I'm not sure anyone is on here blasting the team, but the 2nd half especially, was one of the worst halves of the season. Any objective person cannot sugar coat that...

I've never been a fan of ONLY cheerleading. I see nothing wrong with pointing out a subpar performance. I do agree that saying Sarah is perhaps letting all the good press "get her too comfortable" is a mischaracterization of her game - going from truly elite to just outstanding is indeed her sophomore slump. I'm sure she will right the ship soon enough.

We were without a healthy point guard and that played big with the TOs. Today proved Azzi Ash Allie Blanca and Sarah are good ball handlers but not point guards. We won big inspite of the TOs. Move on its over. Lets get KK and Kayleigh healthy for Seton Hall.

Please cite the post or posts that called this game "a masterpiece."
I sort of believe the opposite that there becomes exaggerations because we see 20 year old kids that don't play great every game and that is somehow a big problem that they aren't some sort of a robot.
News flash to all fans - 20 year college players aren't pros. They are more apt to be inconsistent. 😀

Less than 24 hrs before the game you lose your starting pg, who is 2nd in the nation in A/TO and having a fantastic season. Under the circumstances, what exactly should we all expect from a UConn team that hasn’t even practiced once as a team without KK?

If TX lost Rori Harmon the day before a game, I’m guessing their execution would be pretty shoddy, to say the least.

Finally, someone else has noted that Jana (a very nice person and teammate) is somewhat clumsy and falls often. No previous comments on the fact that 3 of our 4 bigs had 13 TO's---5-4-4 , while Blanca had zero. Maybe Geno needs to start ribbing SS, SW and Jana as leading the free world in turnovers, as he did with Blanca early this year. It seemed to work wonders with BQ.

“jolly-gee” - haven’t laughed so hard all year - broke the tension for me of reading all the BY Millionaires complaining about having to pay taxes - but yes jolly-gee they got a helluva team
 
Now that I’ve had a chance to watch the replay on Peacock, I can honestly say that I’m impressed by what Erin Baath has done with Providence. She got a high energy offense and defense out of an almost entirely new roster. It isn’t just a bunch of random parts and misfit toys. There’s some good athlete on the Friars and I hope they stick around. They kept the first 5 mins close partly because UConn played sloppy (like two weak passes by Sarah in the space of two minutes) but also because they played with great energy.

In the end, the talent on Geno’s roster was going to pull away, even if they didn’t always play good basketball. One of his harshest criticisms for games like this is when he says they won because they were better athletes not better basketball players. There were stretches like this today.

But there were also incredible bright spots, like Jana’s post play. In one sequence, a poor pass to Jana at the top of the key allows a steal. But Jana forces a miss at the other end, grabs the rebound and hits Kayleigh with an outlet pass for an easy transition score. And there were Sarah’s 4 3s in the first quarter.

I think UConn was surprised that Providence was able to sustain their energy for the whole game. Most weaker teams run out of gas in the second half. But Providence stayed strong. They were trapping and getting in passing lanes until the end. That’s how they forced all the turnovers.

I hope this game points to a brighter future for Providence and the Big East. That’s good news for UConn.

Next year we will still have KK, K9 and Kelis so don't worry, and the year after that we will still have K9 and Kelis besides our incoming international recruit.

I agree with you. Strong's turnovers are an issue. Most of them are just weak passes with no stick on them that get picked off. I think she needs to have more intention with the passes and the sense that any of her passes could be picked off if she isn't focused.

You’re better off watching the replay directly on peacock. This replay is from one of two Vietnamese channels that provide a low quality feed that is clipped from full screen and choppy. I suspect the two channels are really from the same source given the identical flaws.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, and Geno does as well. Q1 was the first minutes, literally, without KK and we won it 30-7, so is that really the excuse for the game? If that really was the issue, I'd have expected Q1 to be 22-18 or something. Even Geno disagrees. Postgame with Meg he said:
  • Q1 was great. but the TO's were not good.
  • Said Sarah should have shot the ball every time she touched it because when she didn't, she turned it over.
  • He said that when we looked good (Q1), we looked really really good. And for a lot of the game we were dysfunctional. He did acknowledge that when you take out a primary ball handler, things can look "wonky"
  • Said "I think we can get a lot better - things to work on".
So I'd get it if people on here were like "well it looks like we aren't a NC caliber team". But that's not what I'm saying, for sure. I just think it was a lackluster game. Something to be concerned about? Hell no. But things to work on in the new year? For sure.

And Geno didn't say it, well he did a little bit, credit to PC. I think they have a good coach and are on the right track. They play really disruptive defense, and if they add a few more quality players, they could be a staple near the top of the BE...
 
Anyone could see that this game was not a good game by UConn's (very high) standards...probably KK missing is part of it, some real head scratching self-inflicted turnovers is another, too many fouls, too many missed layups and free throws are another.
While a win is a win, I'm pretty sure most of us want to see UConn play a beautiful game of Basketball and not just win by a lot.

Absolutely. There were more than a few moments when I laughed out loud at one or another boneheaded play. And the most comical ones came from the great ones, Sarah and Azzi. I loved both times when Azzi dribbled the ball off her foot for turnovers.

This game will be a goldmine for Geno’s coaching.
 
One thing is becoming quite clear - Blanca completely changes the game when she comes in. This is at least the third game (I think) where the team has gotten off to an eh start and the other team is keeping pace or at least close. Blanca comes in half way through the quarter and then it becomes a 20 point game.

I thought in this game we passed the ball too much. There were good opportunities passed away. It’s starting to feel too unselfish. K9 was great at the point today and if KK is going to be out again Saturday, it should probably be Azzi and K9 running point.

It was a good game to get information on what other lineups can look like but pretty sloppy overall and really showed how valuable KK is to the team, even if it doesn’t show up on the stat sheet all the time.
