Providence Post Game Thread

I get the impression Donny is not liked on this board. Maybe I'm biased because we attended UConn at the same time but I am a big Donny Marshal fan. To each his own.
He's not any different than most of the color commentators out there. They all make crazy comments, I agree with you, he's not that well liked on this board in general. Donny is a good representative of UConn with out gloating. He keeps us relevant when he talks about his days as a player for this program, that's a bonus. I like Donny as a player and announcer. But than again, God rest his soul, people loved Bill Walton as a color commentator who I thought would distract from the game. He would send me into a bad physcadelic trip. As a player different story.

I think it was the volume of nonsensical comments that he used to make, though I feel he’s toned that down a bit, which probably comes with more experience in the role. He also definitely used to be almost overly critical of UConn, I assume to try to overcorrect for any perceived bias. That also seems to have subsided quite a bit as time has gone on. I don’t mind him anymore.

It is the sheer volume of comments. He literally never shuts up. I agree that he has gotten a little better but still sucks. He should listen to Raff.

None of them shut up, Raff included. Sucks is the sediment that I get on here from others, to each their own.

I know, right? Lord knows that my volume of engagement is way down in recent months, but heaven forbid a sub-topic gets introduced for discussion on a message board. Look at it this way, if it wasn't posted, neither would the feel-good puppy story that followed.

Did you miss the first line that read, "I am questioning the validity of this post, to say the least."
You are part of the problem. Some dopey disclaimer at the beginning, doesn’t alter the fact that you’re a deliberate spreader of misinformation.

The team he has now has too much talent and costs too much to have the results you all have, OT losses or not. The defense PC plays is fairly atrocious (OK maybe mediocre is a better word). And though the individual offense is impressive, the team offense doesn't scream sophisticated. That's all coaching also.

That team would frustrate the hell out of me if I was a fan of them, because they have so much potential and the right pieces even.
It does frustrate the hell out of me, and many others. They are trying to play a pro style offense (hence the good recruiting) which is fine, but you have to have pros (we have a few) and they have to be smart. I think you can see we lack that. No doubt in my mind that Hurley would have the top 2 teams in the league if he coached them too.

Translation: We still suck.

caw's comments that you responded to reflect my thoughts on the Friars. I have watched them a lot this year and the 3 losses that bug me the most are the OT loss to Virginia Tech in Mohegan Sun, the loss at Colorado, and blowout loss to Wisconsin in MTE in San Diego (Villanova beat Wisconsin in Milwaukee).

I was at the AMP Wednesday night and it was a game that I knew would be tough because, to put it simply, Providence has some dudes with good talent and the PC fans would energize them. Jason Edwards concerned me with his ability to draw fouls. He didn't have a good game. Jamier Jones was the guy that concerned me the most after watching what he did against St. John's Saturday, and he had a great game.

UConn showed their championship DNA in finding a way to win, but make no mistake about it, they needed some luck, too. This was a classic road game where in the middle of a game UConn was trailing for 35 minutes of it, the goal is just get find somehow someway to win and get the hell out.

The biggest short term goal after the loss for English is to follow Bill Bellichick's famous press conference, "we are on to Cincinnati". This is even more important than the game strategies and scouting, which are always important. It was gut wrenching loss for PC, but the players have to let it go. PC plays UConn once this week, don't let UConn beat you twice this week by going into Xavier downtrodden and sulking. PC has no business losing to Xavier.

Yes. As I said before the game and after the prior game, when he flashes to the foul line area after a screen, they need to get him the ball. He's usually got AK, Solo or Mullins on the wings and Reed/Reibe in front of him. If they don't collapse on him he scores, if they do he makes the right pass. I said in chat, I think our best lineup has Ball on the bench now that Mullins is healthy. Stewart should start at the 3.

This chart is 95% correct, but not 100%. It should also show gsmooth +1 🙂. I was sitting first row above the tunnel behind PC's bench when Sellers was shooting the FTs to start the 2nd half due to Hurley's technical foul. Right when Sellers going into his shooting motion on the first FT I yelled "miss" really loud and he heard it and it threw him off. All the PC fans in the rows below me turned and looked at me in consternation. I did this the 2nd time, but Sellers to his credit adjusted and made it.

Every point counts

Donny did the Michigan vs Penn St game Tuesday then our game Wednesday. Nice assignments. He is on an upward trajectory.

I think you're math is off as it appears that you are a -1. PC scored one point while you were doing your thing. UConn scored zero during that time.
