Providence Post Game Thread

I think everyone likes Donny in general, as a player and person...
Gotta be honest, I found him annoying as a player and disliked him from moment one as a broadcaster. While he was obviously a good player, the Sheffer to Marshall outlet was tremendous; he was also incredibly annoying to root for, imo. Deep in the recesses of my mind, he's still pump-faking at the three-point line before trying to drive into three people. You know how you have those players who you only like if they are on your team? Like, if Cam was on Creighton, we would've hated him. I feel like Donny is that guy who other teams obviously disliked, but that our own fanbase was also annoyed by his whole "thing."

The best lineup for the occasion ended the game, which is self-evident in the result, but I just gotta defend Solo because was a big part of our life support in the first half. And he actually started the game hot on defense too.
He was also cheering and hyping up his teammates the entire time he rode the bench for the end of the game. Fully Engaged in huddles, first one running out to pump up his guys walking into timeouts. It wasn’t his best night, but he certainly didn’t pout or make it about himself. Great dude and a great teammate.

The real reason that Providence hates UConn is they used to be top dogs in New England. They were the team with Final Fours and NBA draft picks. Their coach and AD Dave Gavitt created the Big East to protect Providence basketball.

UConn was an also ran. Our success came at their expense. UConn became everything the Big East was created for and it was created for Providence. It has to burn.

Not one game though my man Hooper. Let's just put it this way, I'm taking Solo off the floor in any close game situations like tonight within the final 3 minutes. Not reliable. He's great as it comes to being in there and filling it up mid game, but I do not want that dude out there when it's time for good decisions. This isn't the first time Dan Hurley has put him on the bench for long stretches due to him not being a complete player.

Ross coming off injury.

Smith playing very little was a bit surprising.
Smith went in and immediately got burned on an inbounds play. Came out pretty quick after that

He is very good but we can’t see it if he is in foul trouble. Last night he did stay on the floor and that shows how good UConn can and will be when he plays a majority of minutes
I need a few more of these to be a total believer. His offensive game came out of no where. It went from 0-100 in one game. Perhaps it's because he felt they needed him, not sure. We need that kind of shot making from him. He was really spotty prior to that game.

If you saw him in the SEC last year you knew he had this type of scoring ability

On the one hand, yea that seems like horrible game management.

On the other hand, I can see an argument that PC needed to catch lightning in a bottle to win that game. They were hot, shots were dropping...

I can also buy the "ride the horse that got you there" strategy as being not so crazy to try and pull off the signature upset win.

That being said, I agree with the assessment that Kim English, the coach, is a major work in progress (kind assessment)
That is our 3rd or 4th overtime loss and we lead the country in 1 possession losses, and last night wasn’t even one. That’s coaching. It’s a shame too as the guy really can recruit. We are in the final 4 for Caleb Holt even with our terrible record.

Even if it’s true, they are lacking in the rest of the lineup. I think people are reading way too much into a game where we were pretty unfocused for 30 minutes and they played way over their heads. Then at crunch time PC panicked and we did not. Great job by the guys in blue. And as I said St John’s ain’t getting confused with the Michael Jordan Bulls any time soon. Good win by PC but hardly a season defining one. An NIT team beats an NCAA 9 seed. Big whoop! Happens all the time.
I didn’t realize that UConn gave doctorates in being wrong. Did they make the program just for you? He had 2 all freshman members last year and will have 2 this year. The talent is much better than the record. To argue that is silly, but it’s you so…

What happened to Toure!?!

He can - was pleasantly surprised. Would love a BE team to land a kid like Holt. Good luck.

This may be splitting hairs, but he had 14 points, 3-3 from three against Marquette the previous game (despite some foul trouble). And obviously he was our hero and end of game savior against BYU. Those are just two where his scoring was substantial, but he’s also had plenty of games where he assisted very well (which is also offense) despite low scoring. From my perspective, his offensive game hasn’t come out of nowhere at all, but he’s just had a nagging tendency to get 2-3 fouls too quickly to spend lengthy periods on the floor during the first 30 minutes. That’s my impression of what’s largely defined his down games.

I don't disagree, but there is a risk. Look at Liam.

Yes, Liam is suffering the nearly worst case scenario of his draft declaration: guaranteed $5.67 million at signing, over $14 million if he doesn’t play his way out of the league before the end of his contract. What a drag.

I understand there’s an alternate timeline wherein he came back, had an awesome sophomore year and improved his draft stock and got even more/a lot more, but this outcome (which is largely undefined at this point given he’s just a few months into his rookie year) is still fantastic.

I'm talking about the haircut. Escaped prison? What a weird take on a basketball player who looked normal except for his haicut out there.
He had more tattoos than Max Cady did when he left prison in Cape Fear. Coupled with his George Costanza receding hairline im picturing him as a 40 year old who just got out after 20 years served.

He wasn't doing himself a favor coming back for this draft. He'd likely have fallen out of the first.

Did Floyd push off Mullins to free himself at end of regulation for 10-ft baseline shot that he fortunately missed? Mullins was with him defensively one moment and then was sprawling on the floor

Just an FYI on the assists. The NCAA started recording assists permanently in the 83-84 season (they recorded them for a season in the 50s also). So it is possible someone had more than 16. Like the sack record in football, people claim Deacon Jones had the most but they were not recorded in his time.

You throw a little hissy fit, disappear and then come back over after a loss expecting a red carpet or cordial greeting?

How about you take whatever comments we give you and the gag job loss you just had and live with it over on your weird little Scout board?

I think everyone likes Donny in general, as a player and person, but his commentary is just off a lot. Another game I watched with him this week, end of game possession, a team missed the game winning shot but managed to foul the team that was ahead to extend the game. And he says "..everything went right on that possession". He was talking about making a quick foul, neglecting the fact that they missed the game winning shot. Last night when Mullins stepped out of bounds he laughed and said "Mullins high school gym must have been too small". Its a tense moment and that doesnt make sense. His high school gym would be too large if hes stepping out of bounds here.
I hadn't thought about that gym too small comment being reversed but you are right. If I was a Duke fan, I would be all over Donny for that, but I am biased so I forgive him. When you love someone you are quick to give them grace and say, "I know what they meant." Maybe he is not the best color commentator in the business, but Donny is like family so we are good. I am still getting used to the idea that Mike Nardi is now a Husky. I guess in this transfer portal era I should be more inclusive but its hard to root for a Nova alum. Just being honest. Go Huskies!

I always liked Donny as a player. He sometimes talks too much as an announcer but I’ll give him some rope on that. His court comment seemed to be in reverse but I understood what he was conveying. He also used the word intentionality which I had never heard before. But his usage was correct so that one was on me.

Supporting Nardi is not an issue for me. If he is good enough for Hurley then he’s good enough for me. I did notice that he seemed to be a calming influence on Dan when Dan was reacting to a controversial call.
