Providence Post Game Thread

I think our starting 5 without McNeeley just doesn’t have enough offense with Diarra-Ross-Johnson all basically not being guys you can count on for points - and then Karaban realistically needs screens and deception to score, and Ball is mostly a three-point shooter. Reed or Mahaney have to see heavy minutes. We may just have to roll with the small backcourt and scheme defensively as best we can.

I'm looking at the calls that went our way and at the performance from the foul line. Hurley learned his lesson in that first loss in Maui, and the refs are responding.

We are a better team with Reed on the floor. Samson cannot continue to start at Center averaging only 2.5 rebounds a game. There's still a role for Johnson as a pick and roll guy off the bench, but he simply doesn't rebound enough to start.
I’ve come to the conclusion that at our best, we’re a better offense with Samson. He does so many things that are very hard to guard and lead to really easy looks when the team is getting him involved and he’s active. Given he doesn’t really create for himself, he’s also more prone to being a non-factor. You can always dump it down to Reed and let him go to work.

Story of the game wasn’t who obviously played well but rather that Ross and Stewart didn’t play well. They need to get comfortable in their new roles.

I wouldn't group Diarra(Team High points today) and Johnson with Ross who has no offense at all presently. I agree we need to start someone who can score in either Mahaney or Stewart based on matchup.

I love Diarra. But, is he told to hold the ball when he's being trapped in the corner?
Also, my biggest pet peeve is fouling a 3-point attempt.

I think that’s true, especially with McNeeley out. Liam was by far our second best rebounder and the best with Samson on the floor. Can’t afford to start Samson if he isn’t going to bang and get boards

I'm not quite sure what Hurley sees in Ross in these games. He said several times earlier in the season that he's great in practices but I'm not seeing it in the games. His rep was a shooter with very good athleticism but the shot looks broken and he doesn't handle the ball. His defense is okay but he does too much ball watching. It's fine to have warts to your game, several guys on the team have them but they bring something dynamic out there. Ross is just sort of out there.

Ross goes 0-2 as a starter. Does Stewart start the next game?

Huskies looked like vomit on both sides of the ball in the first half. Exploded on offense in the 2nd half and got enough defense to win. But I am concerned by the defense overall. Nice to get the W with McNeeley out.
I observed 2 things today. 1. Ross and Stewart scored a combined 4 points. They are not the answer to Liam’s absence at this point. 2. The Friars drove to the rim most of the game with little resistance and great success. Also, shoutout to Samson for a solid 1st half. It was ugly but we found a way to win. Good character builder.

The ball and both feet have to be completely over for it to be an over and back violation. It was a bad call that ignored the rules of basketball.
Don't think that is accurate. A player becomes a frontcourt player when he has both feet and the ball in the frontcourt. If he goes into the backcourt with one foot it is a backcourt violation.

How did it take so long for the staff to figure out Mahaney has to play off ball? They are the best & so happy with them but it was like Captain Obvious. Great shooter good straight line drives, struggles with full court pressure bringing it up or starting the offense up top.

Knew he would ball out he always had it!!!

Can someone tell D’amelio to stop turning around and flailing his arms around after UConn scores … bud nobody is at Gampel to see you congrats you got splinters in your shoes act like you’ve been there man sheesh

We’re scraping the bottom of the barrel on the complaint front. Too much enthusiasm? Was this a women’s game?

Everyone who paid good money to see James Breeding do his thing got what they paid for. Who do we have to pay to get O’Connell back?

I echo the confusion re Ross. I’m at a loss as to why Hurley is so committed to giving him minutes. People hype his defense but he gets blown by as much as anyone else. I don’t get it.

Great second half for Hass. Player of the game for sure. Kudos to Reed for his second half too.

Yeah, screw that guy. All he does is give his money and time to the program constantly and flies back for games all the time. How dare he be a demonstrative fan who gets the crowd going.

The call was correct. You cannot touch the backcourt once you have been completely in the frontcourt. "A ball that is in contact with a player or with the playing court shall be in the backcourt when either the ball or the player (either player when the ball is touching more than one) is touching the backcourt It shall be in the frontcourt when neither the ball nor the player is touching the backcourt;"
