I never ever complain about the refs but my god, for a 6-8 minute stretch there in the second half it was ridiculous. I mean comically bad. That one play Newton got hit about 6-7 times, no call which followed a phantom call against him on the other end. Anyone objectively watching that had to wonder what was going on.

We went into protect mode and the worst it got was 5 points and we had the ball. So not a lot of danger Just a bit of keister clenching for us the entitled. Hurley said we played bad and yes we did. Got to clean that up but at this time of year it’s just advance.

I have way too many thoughts so I’ll keep them condensed as much as possible
  • 5 point game with a few minutes left and we won by 7. I’ll take it
  • (Mostly a first half comment) Andre giveth and Andre taketh away. That was the best 20 minutes of his career. He OWNED the half entirely
  • Not sure why Newton came off the bench but it seemed to be effective. Stellar game
  • Sanogo was very effective without stuffing the box score
  • Hawkins nearly another 20 piece despite 3-9 3P shooting
Now the bad…
  • WOW. That was almost the worst implosion I’ve ever seen. That was really really bad.
  • Shaka would be wise to press and trap all game tomorrow. We got beat up BAD during the last 10 minutes

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it forever. Players should adjust as the game goes on. Coaches should adjust as the game goes on. Referees should never adjust as the game goes on. There’s NO reason you should let bully ball go for half of the game, and then call every touch you see for 10 minutes, and then let bully ball play for 10 minutes. You set the tone early, you stick with it

I should be cracking champagne for a 20+ point win against Providence, but instead I’ll have a beer because UConn beat a really good PC team. Credit to them, they made some tough shots down the stretch and gave themselves a chance to win with high energy

But at the end of the day, UConn advances!

After. nearly flawless 1st half, we were as sloppy as i’ve ever seen the last 10 or so minutes. They scored 47 in the second half, that’s BAD. As i’ve said, we make so many mistakes to make games closer than they are, and they are almost always self inflicted.

Plus, the refs were downright awful down the stretch. Newton getting fouled about 15 times and never getting a call on that Sanogo bucket late was so poetic to how the refs called it. I don’t know what Cooley does to get all these calls and never get any calls against, but it works.

On to Marquette, on the bright side, Marquette isn’t a team that will kill with pressure like PC did.
Cooley knows how to work the refs for sure. He has a pretty good rep with them. You can even see when he was talking with one at the end of the game.

I could have been looking at a different guy but I think the point guard had 16 points and 7 assists against one turnover and made the only 2 free throws taken by UConn over the last 17 minutes of the game. I don't recall Adama being put in a position to shoot any free throws down the stretch.

I think Hurley needs to take some blame too... He needed to take a couple TOs during that run and tried to wait for the TV timeouts instead. Not particularly thrilled with that.
I thought he took one when Newton threw it away and so did Newton!

I would like a word with the chuckleheads who still think that we do not need a point guard.

Our plan to have Adamo Sanogo try to handle the ball to close out a win-or-go-home basketball game was a little shaky there.
That was a good play. It broke the press and they committed foul number 6 on Sanogo.

Vegas paid the refs to get it under 7.5. Nothing to see here.

Hit some big shots down the stretch though.
So obvious they were all bad but one especially is just not willing to call a foul on the other team when he refs a UConn game. I wish I knew their names but you could actually seem him about to call one of the dozen pc fouls that were not called and then he caught himself. We are so much better than pc this year. I just hope we see the first 30 minute Jackson tomorrow he is amazing but some of those late passes. Jordan is just one of the best players in the country.

Yep, he can't wait for the TV timeouts any longer. When things start going bad call the TO immediately, don't hope you can get an extra possession or two before the scheduled break. That's when things spiral.
