Providence Is A Good Team

One more thing, I decided to watch and count the number of times a player with the dribble went into the paint from outside of it.

1st 10 minutes of the first half. 9 times a UConn player dribbled with the ball into the lane. 11 times a PC player dribbled into the lane

2nd 10 minutes of the first half. 11 times UConn did it and 11 times PC did it.

1st 10 minutes of the 2nd half. 9 times UConn did it, and 14 times PC.

Last 10 minutes of game. 6 times for UConn and 10 for PC

UConn 34 times UConn dribbled drove into the paint. PC did it 45 times.

So 45-34 PC

Fouls were 27-20 UConn

Couple observations. Watching intently of another team gives an interesting perspective. Newton really tried, although as the game slipped, UConn resorted to shooting 3’s (coaching) Newton was responsible for many of UConn’s dribble drives before that time period. Hawkins scored or was fouled almost every time he did it. Sanogo had many chances and didn’t much try and Jackson should have done it much more, he must look for his own offense and it’s not chucking 3’s. Essentially, I think he has to be more like Hopkins who was relentless. Finally I was surprised how effective Locke was off the dribble as well.
now, that's data. useful and sentient, with no deep doodoo analysis of arm angles and such. bingo, bango.
and,
Newton really tried,
yeppers. obvious.
one point tho, You don’t have a single player as talented as Hopkins to boot. mebbe, mebbe not. hop is oh, so sweet. danny said 'we watched the tape and he scared us.' of course, another dopey danny comment.
not cool. i am of the opinion that donno may be the one. if the draft were today, he is the only one that could go higher than hop. ur guard opinion is also spot on with our move to replace jalen and corey with mr oldman can't shot and mr. can't brake. hey gang! where are all those lazerlike gushings on these two from yestermonth. it's now January, halfway thru, and i've seen absolutely zero, squattola, from both. not interested in doing the 'bbut, bbut tomorrow!' thing again. in the real world, there is a yuge diff between 'speculation' and 'investment.' all i got is hanging the label "Sir Stop Touching Me' on typo years ago, joshy is wonderful, jmoney leading his squad to unprecedented heights, and corey now just beginning his career in a big way by dropping a death bomb 3 on danny. and us.
kudos mr 'getaway place in Alaska.'
now, that's gettin away. prolly a great help in thinking clearly.

Hopkins not as great today but Providence had 34 FTs.

Rewatched PC game and their game today I’m not sure that style of play will travel well, meaning in tournament. Reminds me of Leprechauns teams at Cincy. PC needs calls going their way to win, which they can get in the BE.

That’s some condescending crap right there. Tell me about your backcourt talent again? Outside of Hawkins, who is a great talent, the rest of your backcourts skill level isn't there. (Read that somewhere and it applies) I wouldn’t trade a single one of them for any one in our backcourt. Our two freshman outplayed them the majority of the 2nd half. Tell me why I’m wrong.

You don’t have a single player as talented as Hopkins to boot. Spare me the talent difference crap. You got some players that can jump high. Congrats.
Talented could mean a number of things, but it seems ridiculous to suggest we have nobody that talented on our roster.

He’s averaging less points and a lower TS% than Sanogo. Rebounding numbers are almost even per 40 minutes. Adama splitting time with Clingan is hurting his normal averages.

And I know you’ll say it’s because Hopkins will play in the NBA while Sanogo probably won’t. But that’s not because of skill/talent at the college level. Hopkins is just built for the NBA game better.

Meanwhile Hawkins is almost assuredly going to be picked higher in the draft than Hopkins, if that’s the route you’re going to argue.

Clingan might have the best size adjusted athleticism in college basketball. Scouts have called him a possible 1 and done.

Andre might be the best athlete in college basketball, which is an aspect of “talent.”

But if none of this addresses what you meant by “talent,” let me know.

Hopkins was a very highly rated high school player, who seems to be coming into his own. He may be the most talented of any of the players btw UConn and PC.

It is hard to 100% agree but it’s an argument that can be made.

I wouldn’t take him on UConn ahead of Jackson, but I wouldn’t mind him at the four, and I love Karabans potential (and production).

As for the rest of his drivel, he’s off his meds.

You were doing so well.

You’re reading a lot into that one game. But thank you, I believe you guys made us a better team. We’ll see you soon.

Go back to wherever PC fans go

Providence has had a soft schedule to open their season. UCONN has had a tough schedule to open their season with the final stretch this Wednesday @Marquette. Providence just pulled one out at home against a very bad St. John’s team (we did the same with GTOWN but won by 11, not 3.) Providence has 7 days to get ready for @Creighton and then it’s on to @Marquette, DePaul at home, Butler at home, @NOVA, and @ Xavier. Two “easy” get right games sandwiched at home in between 4 tough road games. It’ll be interesting to see how Providence does in the toughest part of their schedule.

Can we stop with the ___ is a good team bulls^t, please? Someone did it after the Xavier ass kicking too. Lets not make this a thing. We got taken to the woodshed twice in a week. Even in the win before that we had our prized big man leave with less teeth than he checked in with. It's about time we have someone step up and claim a few chiclets of our own.
Make up your mind. Posters get crap for criticizing UCONN’s play, and they also get crap for complimenting an opposing team.

You were doing so well until this post. Your backcourt played very well Carter plays hard but gets away with murder. Holds everyone coming off picks basically all game. Your PG is make or break he’s not very good. Locke played out of his butt hasn’t looked all that good until this game but that’s good timing. Hopkins is a real nice player I would take him over most anyone we have. Croswell had an unofficial triple double they just didn’t call all of his fouls, another clutcher pushed and grabber.

But hey you guys are good tough. Reality will set in I have no doubt. But enjoy the ride.

This is some world class whining here. You put it into almost every sentence. The absolute epitome of the whining that now infects this fan base. It’s sad to watch a 4 time NC fan base act like everything is against them. The AAC did a number on you guys.

You seem confused every time the board doesn’t give you a tongue bath. This place allows a forum for visiting fans to interact and even criticize the host team, which is far more than the circle jerk Coren runs.

Providence is gum on the bottom of our shoe.

I love the watching the friardude who just thinks they won the Super Bowl come over here to crow. Enjoy the rest of your season. And remember no matter what Peecee does, it just doesn't matter.

You’ve taken offence I see. Good.

Obtuse response, just commenting on the seemingly unending excuses and whining that you and your buddies have in your arsenal. It’s impressive and sad all at once.

We just got our @sses handed to us by Providence and people are saying UConn is still better.

Maybe? But not on Wednesday night. No way.
To be fair UConn probably is a better team, but It’s the hilarious whining, last year it was “we didn’t have Sanogo” and then it was “you refused to play us” now here we are this year and it’s the refs. Not a lot of self awareness here.

I mean we didn’t have Sanogo……

Thats not whining

Obtuse if you don't understand the meaning of obtuse. My post could not have been clearer or more to the point.

In the world of college basketball, Peecee doesn't matter

Exactly. I'd argue that this poster is out whining us about our whining.

Not mentioned so far is the value of playing in packed arenas. Nor mentioning having a bulls eye on your back. UConn is going to get everyone's best shot this year. I expect that will happen with Providence as well because they probably will be ranked next week.

@auror summed up one aspect of the victory when he reviewed play by play of the game and stated Providence made some contested threes and UConn missed many open threes. Although we didn't shoot lights out in the Creighton game in making threes Creighton was abysmal.

The best teams need to win every home court game and whoever does better in the away games will be the champions of the regular season.

Biggest factor for me in the Providence game was the foul trouble Andre was in all game. In a tough environment defense is one aspect of the game that is most predictable and not having Andre available to cover Hopkins was clearly an advantage that was in Providence's favor.

You goof, he went play by play of UConn possessions. That’s the self awareness problem I’m talking about. There are two squads on the floor. It would be easier I know if it was just Jackson out there chucking 3’s by himself but that’s not how it works.

I speak the truth I’m not whining at all. We didn’t deserve to win no matter the Friars were better. But I’m not wrong in any of what I said. If you think that game was called well then you’re whacked. If you don’t like it here move on then please.

PC will always be that team to me where if you beat them, who cares, you were supposed to. But if you lose it really sucks because you're not supposed to lose to teams like PC. No upside and big downside. :p

No, I watch UConn on defense, too... you know when Providence had the ball. And I'm checking for openness of shooters as one of many things I look at, so I'm assessing opponent defense, too. But don't take my word for it, take the ShotQuality company's stat. It's not a perfect metric, but it was built to describe exactly what we're talking about, and a 20+ point net difference in the game from shot variance is not an amount to just handwave away.

And note I'm not saying Providence is bad. Check my posts from before the game where I said they were incredibly underrated and that the crowd/arena was going to have a big impact. And it did. That's a big part of the shooting variance.

auror already addressed your comment to me. I’ll add that his primary focus for this forum in that thread is to provide in depth accounting of UConn’s players and how they played in each game as opposed to @Hey Adrien! who prior to each game does an in depth and fair evaluation of opponents.

auror is absolutely the wrong poster to support your case. More than his in depth analysis I appreciate his non emotional approach here. For instance he pointed out using his evaluation process that the best UConn play in the Providence game came from Donovan.

So I questioned who Donovan played against. He indicated he does not include defensive players in his evaluation which of course would be valuable information. Playing against Moore vs. Crosswell would make a difference in assessment of Donovan’s game play.

But as long as we know his process, which is incredibly extensive and time consuming, we can fill in the gaps if we want.

Friar J...I enjoy reading most of your posts...Do you not spend much time on reading your own message board...hilarious the week before the UConn game how much I saw the whining about how could they dare schedule the UConn game when the students were on vacation... not to mention how bad UConn return to the BE was...

You guys should note that this should be THE best rivalry in the BE..The conference needs legit rivalries!!!
