(If being in a close game makes you a better team) "That was a difficult game to sit and watch, I don't know what it felt like to play in it. It was difficult to watch, but at the same time, sometimes you get caught in those kinds of games and you have to figure out a way to win it. We made just enough good plays at the end. Caroline (Doty) bailed us out, her and Bria (Hartley) made a couple big shots and you just need to do that sometimes. It's not always going to be pretty; it's not always going to be where everything goes your way. Some shots are easy to get and drop, sometimes you have to figure out how to win a game that's not easy to win.

There will be more teams that will let Kelly shoots at will. She's got to start hitting her shots and become an offensive threat. She's got to drive to the basket to score points or get free throws if she's not hitting her outside shot.

She has been hitting those shots in a number of games. last night she was simply one of several players not hitting their shots. Kelly was far from the only player who was missing. Only Caroline was in double figures. None of the players normally scoring in double figures did so last night. Kelly was at the bottom of the list of shooting woes last night.

I agree 100% but lets not lay that one ugly BB game on Kelly. KML continues to be in a slump and when the threes aren't falling (for anyone) there has to be a way to score inside. When Tiff was on the bench the whole team seemed to be in vibrate mode - not having a strong floor leader out there.

I disagree about the situation with Tiff because the team played strong down the stretch when she went out of the game.

A fine game to win for UCONN...opponents will use the rough stuff, and this was a more than useful preparation for that approach. Moreover, serious teams win when they are not playing "good". UCONN is a serious team.

This is the incorrect approach to this situation in my opinion. She has to take some shots with confidence, and for the most part she has. One of the good things about Kelly is that she is disciplined enough to not give into the defense and shoot at will, an she has gotten much better this season at making the defense honor her before passing to a teammate. The three point shot she set up for Caroline at the end of the game is just one example. I don't have much of a problem with the way Kelly attacked the situation last night, she just missed shots along with many of her teammates.

I think that the staff is going to have to come up with a plan for when Kelly is out there in the corner with no one with 20 feet of her. My first reaction was : why not dribble in and take a short shot; go to the post? Move in and be a screen for still relatively short pull-ups by teammates. I wouldn't be surprise to see Geno put some of this or even better ideas into the offense

Shooting off the dribble is not Kelly's game. As for going into the post, Louisville was holding and hacking without being called for fouls so it would be a low percentage shot to drive into the defense. The screens weren't working last night because the Cards were banging the cutters off their routes. That's why the offense looked so ugly. What UConn usually does so beautifully was negated by the physical play last night. The only way UConn was going to win was by making threes or going one one one which is what Caroline and Bria did, respectively.

Are you referring to the time when both Tiff and Bria were on the bench?

Scotter, I think that your post is spot on. Kelly's discipline still forces the team to honor her position even if they don't rush to get to her. Leave her completely alone and she will hurt just as she did against ND.

Rarely saw anything like that last night. They may have sagged off Kelly until she got the ball but once she did they honored her position spreading the floor.

The ony chance to win the game that the Cardinals had was to use the kickboxing defense with refs provided by McMahon's WWF. We must admit, it was a good strategy.

I don't think Kelly's shooting is so bad that the opposition can let her shoot unopposed at will and she can get hot on occasion. Her 3pt % is about 6% lower than Bria and KML and 10% lower than Doty. Her 2pt % is about the same as KML. The fact that when she misses, she seems to miss by a lot and that gives the impression that she is worse than she actually is. That said, it would be nice to see her hit a higher percentage of her shots.

I thought Stef did a great job in the trenches. She was active and wasn't taking any you know what from the the opposition. A few times she was Caroline-like in going after loose balls. Kiah didn't have a lot of minutes, but I thought she played well while she was in there.

Overall, I was proud that the ladies still won when things wern't going right in several areas of their game and in a hostile environment .

Maybe it's just me, but I feel Kelly has had her longest streak of bad games over the last four games - since she landed on her bum against Syracuse. She has forced several passes and missed a few open passes, her shot is off and her offense aggressiveness seems to be fading. She has made a few nice moves here and there but it has not consistent. Her defense has been stellar but she has even been in foul trouble in 2 of the 4 games - very uncharacteristic even though I acknowledging there have been a few bad calls.

Last 4 games:
6/17 2FG
1/8 3FG
4/4 FT
5.25 Rebounds
7 assists to 12 turnovers
5 blocks
6 steals
19 total points scored

12.5% 3FG
35% 2FG
28% total FG

It won't get easier and I hpe she can work her way out of it. We need her to be productive offensively - even if it's not scoring.

Other than Caroline's game saving performance when you take Tiff out of the picture you have Bria, Kelly & KML who collectively went 2 for 16 from 3 pt land and 5 for 26 from the floor overall. So of their 26 shots 16 were from outside. Its hardly a strong showing.
Hey the world isn't ending - even with stinko stats they still managed to pull out a gutty win. It is what it is. . .

Bruin - i didn't want to quote your entire post, but i think Kelly's offensive woes are exacerbated by KML's slump. they haven't scored over 70 in their last 3 games and "only" put up 77 on USF.

Believe it or not, USF scored more points (62) than Syracuse (54), Duke (45), Rutgers (34) or L'ville (46), and those last 3 teams are all ranked in the top 20...

Wasn't USF the team with the 6'5" foreign sharpshooter who became eligible just this semester? Few teams have that type of weapon. That's why I think USF is underrated.

Three ranked teams averaging 42 ppg against UConn. Now that is some defense!

well not to rain on your parade, but since putting up 62 on UCONN, they lost every game since - WVU 55-52, Syracuse 76-61, and SJU today 67-57. i guess UCONN took the fight out of them and they haven't recovered... :)

UConn is everyone's Final Four game, the one opponents circle on their calendar. UConn is always going to get their opponents' best efforts.

My recollection is she was not 6-5. Maybe 6-2 or 6-3. Also kind of a typical European player.. one dimensional, excellent outside shooter, not much else. Kind of soft. Will help USF because she adds to their offense but that's about it.
