Post game press conference-PC

Thank you Silas, Malachi and Reibe/Reed for showing up. Alex ended up with decent numbers but he wasn’t good. The 2 bench guys we needed to show up didn’t, not good but an again, Reibe and Malachi did. I am very happy for Malachi he had a rough stretch but came up big!

Not pretty but another W. Funny thing is I could only watch a little of Creightons horrible loss they were so bad. But deep down inside I know that Blue Jay team will be so different against us Saturday you won’t recognize them making shots from everywhere lol.

This is the season where we get everyone’s A game unfortunately. They all make the BE look bad and then we play them and make them look like real teams.
 
I think, unfortunately, that my FT take may age well. The ceiling on this team is natty. The floor may be New Mexico. Watching Nebraska vs Michigan, watching Arizona vs BYU….these dudes are playing at a different level. But we have a month to get our s—- together.

Because it probably can’t get worse and is just a pain tolerance thing. And solo probably wanted to play hoping to showcase himself for the NBA. Can’t do that if you’re not playing. He wouldn’t be playing if it could jeopardize is future.

Also telling is his Eric needs to play more. As the guys on spaces correctly nailed last night, I don’t care what Reed’s stat line says (it usually looks good). He leaves a lot of “meat on the bone” with missed defensive assignments, non rebounding, missed free throws, and bad decisions (picking up an early 3rd foul).
 
I would love to see Jaylin Stewart take over a game one of these days. He had 1 game last year where he went nuclear.

He is just TOO good a teammates sometimes. Doesn't play selfish enough. It seems like if he misses his 1st couple shots, he decides to shut down his offensive game and start deferring.

I dont know if there is an ideal rotation. Its a team wide issue. No lineup is working better than another as it happens. We make the same mistakes as a unit. Eric played well considering, but even with him playing a hypothetical 30 minutes and a healthy Mullins I think the game would've looked the same. I have no reason to feel otherwise.
My best guess is January slump.
 
There was a moment in the game last night that perfectly summed up the problem with Ross/Stewart.

I forget which one it was, but they got the ball in the paint and had no one within a few feet of them and they had no instinct to actually shoot it. They kept looking around for someone to pass to and after a few seconds finally had the realization that they were wide open they put up a weak shot and missed.

just shows how these guys are not in attack mode by default. they are 100% deferential on offense and so they pose no threat at all to the other team.

The best offenses have all five guys posing some type of threat to put maximum stress on the defense at all times.

when guarding us now teams know they need to just collapse on Reed and then isolate a few key shooters on the perimeter.

The two PGs also just don't look for him. Last night Smith went around one of Stew's screens, Stew came very open above the foul line and Smith ignored him and looked for AK or Solo, who were well guarded, then did more dribbling and missed a bad shot. This is on Hurley. He has to enforce it.

We don't move the ball enough. Both of these PGs hold it too long, dribble too much. The off ball screens are much less common, and we don't see the kind of 3-4 passes leading to an open look offense we've seen in the recent past. We get Solo, Alex or Mullins curling off a screen or we feed the post. That's the offense. But that's old traditional offense. I see brief stretches where they click and move the ball, but they don't sustain it.

Both have had games where they have been a bit more assertive, but both also have assignments for when they are in the game. They generally defer to the better shooters. Malachi was not taking many perimeter shots, but then was also trying to do some things inside that might work at Dayton but don't against BE defenses. Last night when he was needed, his perimeter shooting was just fine. He should take more of those shots.
 
I may have been dreaming this, but I though I saw something about Dan saying that the offensive philosophy (high quality shots, lower quantity) doesn’t fit the personnel and that we’d be better off with higher quantity of shots due to streaky shooters/scorers. He also mentioned that it’s pretty late in the season to be changing the strategy.

I’m sure he didn’t count on Solo regressing as a sniper or Braylon being out, but his description clicks for me in a “that’s what I’m seeing/feeling in all of these rock fight games.”

I think it’s going to take a real coaching effort to make meaningful adjustments to have the offense be better - I’m resigned to “our personnel is what it is at this point” and there’s not going to be some “click” that makes it a suddenly high-efficient offense.

Looking forward to seeing the staff earn its $$$$$

There's a reason why he was open to shoot. Those attempts needed to go to other players. The game wouldn't have been close if he wasn't gunning with the bball IQ of a 3rd grade rec player.

I'd guess 9 of his attempts were early shot clock, contested, etc. He needs to only shoot the ball when he is open catch and shoot or if he can drive it.

Yup, agree 100%. Seems Stew has lost all the confidence he built up earlier in the season. Ross still plays faster than he can control. Both are none factors on the offensive end. And Stew showed promise on offense earlier. Alex in the paint misses many because he’s under the rim while the defender is above the rim.

There was a thread a few weeks back saying he was a "great basketball player" and I'll reiterate what I said then: no, he's really not. He's normally an outstanding shooter. But his general awareness of how to play the game, something a guy like Cam Spencer was elite at, is not that high.

The team is good. It will be better at some point than it is now. But there are some concerns with almost every player. Silas really doesn't know how to play off the ball in our offense. Smith needs to move the ball more quickly. Solo is limited. Alex tries to do too much, including things he's not good at (attacking longer guys in the paint). Mullins is critical and seemed to be learning to facilitate when he got clobbered. Reed is inconsistent. Stewart doesn't have the trust of the PGs and seems unsure of his role. Ross tries too hard to make a flashy immediate impact, gambling on D or executing difficult passes (sometimes works).
