I am amazed at the outstanding conditioning of Boneyarders, who have the ability to go hard arguing the same points over and over for hours on end. We are marvels of modern science.
that should be nominated for the post of the month.

But she simply uses her pacing on the court to manage that. If she was in better condition she could assert herself harder and at a quicker pace. Too often I see her cruising. She relies on her dominance by size to make it work for her rather than really taking it to the opponent and kicking their butts. When I watch Stef vs watching Brittney I see and player working her butt off vs one relying on her talent to do the work. Tina did that all the time until Geno got through to her. If she was in better condition and motivated to the maximum effort every moment of every game she would dwarf even what she can do presently.

I do not expect you to agree with me I simply see so much more potential in her that is still untapped and I think the area of conditioning and maximum effoty every play is a key one. It is critique, not criticism.

i think we need to consider what mulkey has mentioned before and worked with her in practices i've seen, which is not to give the defense a heads up of where in the post she is going to be. If she gets there too soon the post players afflict more hitting, scratching, pushing and shoving per possession. So she has to be efficient with her post position in order to take them more by surprise. She often has someone waiting for her there... so she has to beginning posting up in different spots and make it difficult for the defenders to know where she is going to be. She's also taught how to trick the defenders into thinking she isn't going to get the pass from the guards... or fake like she is receiving it and repost.. it's a long hard and rough process... but she seems to have the hang of it.

She is working on her feet... for better position as well.

I would like to add my two cents.

I am extremely grateful that UConn did not suffer any significant injuries this season. That doesn't happen very often, unfortunately. UConn trainers must be doing something right.

i felt like the athleticism in the post was lacking this year for uconn, you could really use more of your athletic post players, Dolson got to be very predictable and often too tired by the end of the game to make a difference. I felt bad for Bria, Farris, and Hayes... they really worked hard and made such an effort to try to beat ND, but they were overmatched by the guards in NDs team.

Go back and watch some footage of Kareem Abdul Jabbar, which to me, is the most comparable comparison. He cruised in a similar manner and was the greatest center in the history of the game. He had a way of standing back and watching the play develop, much as Griner does.

It is simply unrealistic to expect a 40 minute a game player to go as hard as she can all game long. She is very smart with the pacing of her energy.
and getting blocks is not an easy feat... you have to be quick and agile.. as to not body up the offensive player... which is hard to do...takes up lots of energy chasing around the post... those speedy guards try and try and try.... which is exhausting.

what I do not see in Brittney is the mental force and compete every possession attitude that Geno and Cd are so good at bringing out of players, such as, Tina Charles. More than anything else that is what would make Brittney the most impossible player in the world to deal with.

Completely agree, that's all I was trying to get at :)

I watched Maya and she was not perpetual motion like Nneka. Nneka may be the best mover I have ever seen. However, it is much easier for a 6-0 guard like Maya to move more than a 6-8 center who wears a size 18 shoe. Also, NOBODY in the history of women's sports got shoved and pushed more than BG. You have to account for some of that when you discuss her fitness level. EDD got banged a lot in the Kansas game and it completely wore her out to the point where she had nothing to give toward the end of the game.

You have to compare apples to apples. You simply cannot compare the movement of a player with BG's size to that of a guard. That's like criticizing Kareem for not moving as well as Michael Jordan.

it was funny... but all Kansas did in the KU and Delaware game was play the same defense they are use to playing against us... and make the rest of the team beat you. It was that simple... and it worked out. EDD is not the player of the year... neither is Nneka...

The only injury that Baylor suffered was an ACL to Shanay Washington, who had 4 previous ACL tears. Hard to say that was a result of the Baylor training staff.

that reminds of me of Doty....

And for the record, I was not the one to bring Charles up in this discussion (see the below comment from post #17 below). I only responded to this statement.

another point when it comes to attitude on the floor is Griner has tried to keep a cool calm demeaner on the floor so her opponents and taunting fans dont see that she is affected by their trash talk...

her freshman year she was completely affected by all the taunting and the constant pushing and fouling by the opponents and their taunting fans that it made her react.

Mulkey has worked on her being more calm and collected on the court, now that Griner has mature in that aspect Mulkey is working on bringing back the aggressive nature of Griner's abilities... as discussed many times by Mulkey.

We sit on our butts for hours at a time, typing away on trivial, nonsensical threads, just for that moment when a good thread appears, we are ready.

Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now!

Not sure how the "Taurasi play" got into my post. I apparently started to post on one thing and switched to another. This looks to be caused by poor "mental conditioning."

Remember - our streak was ended by Villanova.

Sometimes it's a David that takes down the Goliath.
I'm late to this thread, but I can't believe no one caught this....

Our 90 game win streak was not broken by "David" it was broken by a

Why in the world would you compare a 6-0 guard to a 6-8 center. I brought Nneka up because she is a great move but NOT 6-8. It was additional argument that you simply cannot compare Griner's movement to a smaller player.

And Nneka outplayed Griner too. :)

Villanova did end the winning streak in 2003 and they were most certainly a David.

Thanks for the assist, calpedaler. I assumed long-time fans would know which streak I was referencing.

The shock of that loss is so memorable that it's hard to believe that 9 years have passed since that day. That season did END well though:)

I have been a UConn fan since 1991. The threads prior to your post were discussing the 90 game win streak and the possibility of Baylor breaking that streak.

Riiiiiight . . . it was about the very real possibility of a team no one expects (like Villanova) breaking the streak of a dominant team (like Baylor).

It happened to us. It could happen to them next season.
