Pitino Gonna Pitino

Apparently the current guy in his own conference with the last 2 national titles is no rival. Total POS.
The guy has coached nearly 40 years in college and singles out Jim Calhoun as the guy he respects the most in the sport and this is your takeaway. Bizarre.

It’s when he’s saying it. How come we ever heard these pearls in the last 40 years? He doesn’t bother to say that now UConn is a rival in the BE? He respects Calhoun huh? How bout respecting Hurley? He could have thrown it in. Smart enough to know it’s a bizarre dig at Hurley after that Storrs comment, right? The guy is scum and it’s shocking that anyone would root for him.

Frankly, I don't think it has anything to do with Hurley and I am no supporter of Slick Rick.

I have read of the mutual respect between Pitino and Calhoun before. There were articles when Iona was playing UConn in 2023.

Here is a quote from Calhoun in 2023 taken from this link speaking of Rick Pitino.

"He's a terrific coach, his teams are going to win," said Calhoun, who got to know Pitino's son, Richard, who coached Minnesota while Calhoun worked at ESPN. "He's always been able to get players, he's always turned them into better than when they came. He doesn't have to be my best friend, but I will and do have great respect for him as a coach."

Here is a link to a book "Boston Ball" that talks about the early years with Pitino at BU, Calhoun at Northeastern and Gary Williams at Boston College.

I think that's great to hear. Look, right now it's like BU v. Northeastern with he and Hurley, but I think deep down, each respects the other and knows the other is a great coach. People have to just enjoy the rivalry for what it is. Have some fun with it, enjoy the games, and learn to laugh a bit more. Hey maybe Pitino makes the Final Four this year or maybe Hurley wins his 3rd next year or the year after. I, for one, am gonna enjoy watching 2 great coaches and leaders run their programs.

Two big names like Dan Hurley and Rick Pitino will keep the limelight on the Big East which is always good thing. In addition to them the Big East has some really good coaches like Shaka Smart, Greg McDermott, Sean Miller, and Ed Cooley.

Pitino said, “I told my team this: Do you understand what March can do for you in life? Some of my players in Lexington, I don’t know if they’re working! They’re living a good life. Taliek Brown is a coach right now with us. ... If he didn’t win the national championship at U-Conn. [in 2004], I never would have hired him. I wanted someone my players could look at, look up and say he went through it...”

I find Slick Rick’s obsession w UConn bizarre as well. Is there something deeper to this?

I think he realizes they are his competition for Big East supremacy including both winning and getting players. Pitino is going to be 73 this year, not sure how much longer he will coach (he can certainly coach for several more years but the work that you have to put in will wear him down as he ages), but he knows that to be hailed as the best team in the league, he has to surpass UConn. Pitino is trying to sell St. Johns right now to the media and knows Hurley is their villain. Frankly, it's good for the league, and in the end it's about winning National Championships for me. Lest we not forget, Marquette was a terrific team who won the Big East Championship 2 years ago. They were upstaged by UConn winning the National Championship.

Coaching style wise. There’s probably no two coaches more similar than JC and Pitino from the OBE.

We're up against the evil empire P2. Get eyeballs on the Big East, make SJU/UConn (also Pitino/Hurley) one of the sport's preeminent rivalries

PC board is convinced Pitino was tampering with Hopkins as early as last spring. They are also convinced PC could have hired him to replace Cooley, so a typical day over there.

Glad we are 2-0 in the tourney so far

The Pitino story feels oddly similar to another New Yorker.

New Yorkers never quit.

After watching that video it does feel like Hurley inherited Calhoun's 'enemy' whose out for vengeance.

Hurley needs Pitino just like the Red Sox needs the Yankees. Just saying Pitino will not let Hurley rest and will keep pushing him. Pitino is even trying to reclaim the Garden and NYC market from us. He even 'snatched' UConn killer Kadary to compete with Hurley.

Kinda boring without those two fighting for BE dominance. I'm loving this old school BE rivalry!

I think it's not that. He's pretty much saying how Calhoun is a peer in every way. How they came up as rivals before the BE and continued being rivals in the BE and in some ways are looked at as rivals now in regards to being the best coach ever. He doesn't mention another coach that came up around the same time in K, because K wasn't down the street when he was starting and wasn't in his backyard when he was in the BE. It's a matter of familiarity and longevity.

I think it was a very subtle swipe at Calipari, who not only restored the Kentucky program that Pitino rebuilt, but competed with for a number of years first Louisville vs Memphis, then Kentucky vs Louisville.

LOL. I don't think it was so subtle.

I realize I’m in the minority, but I like this newer better version of Pitino. He said earlier in the year that he’s learned a great deal of humility, and I think that comes across in the things he says and how he says them.

Pitino has been faking humility (and sincerity) for as long as he's been able to speak.

Yeah he’s the A-Rod of college basketball trying to rehab years of being a d0uche. (From a Yankee fan)
