My wife tells a different story. She was at Pitt for the '76 NC with Dorsett. If you ask her, Marino is best known for gagging away Pitt's chances at an NC during the 1981 season.

And the actual answer to best athlete from Pittsburgh has been Honus Wagner since forever. 2nd place is probably Montana. Some would say Arnold Palmer, but Latrobe is too far out for an actual suburb.
Montana isn't from Pittsburgh. If he was from Pittsburgh and played at Pitt I would certainly put him on the list.

He's from a town that's next door to a large park where I often take my dog. Grew up in and played QB in Monongohela, one of the more significant mill towns in these parts (and name of one of the three rivers). Close enough for rock n roll. In fact, Ringgold HS in Monongohela renamed its football stadium Joe Montana Stadium.

He's as much Pittsburgh as Joe Namath or Jim Kelly. Along with Montana, Unitas and Marino, it's why they call the WPIAL the conference of HoF QBs (and that's not including Bruce Gradkowski or Mark Bulger).

From Washington State and the great PNW, 3 all time great, Hall of Famers;
John Stockton
Ryne Sandberg
John Elway

I went with Hamill because she was a couple of years older than me and, well you know.
Must have been the haircut although Calvin was a better baton twirler. BTW, I still love to hear Steve Young talk about the mean streets of Greenwich when he is on PTI or Dan Patrick. Always a good interview.

Walt Dropo
Bobby Valentine
Jen Rizzoiti
Calvin Murphy sorry gotta list 4

And Gretchen Walsh is from CT. Mom ran ER @ Norwalk Hospital for years..swam for Chelsea Piers & Rocky Point Club in Greenwich

Just because of the time of year I'd like to shoehorn in East Hartford's Mike Manganello. Who? The winner of the 1970 Kentucky Derby piloting a massive longshot named Dust Commander. That was the Derby that produced the epic essay "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved".

He's the 3 in the yellow.

Y'know, watching that again. Calvin Borel wishes he could work out a rail trip better than Mike did here.

I currently live in Connecticut, but was actually born in NJ. Yeah, Exit 5. Burlington/Mount Holly. So my three guys are :
Franco Harris
Irving Fryar
Kashif Moore

My UConn roommate was Steve Youngs next door neighbor on Split Timber Drive in Old Greenwich. Still raves about all the wiffle ball home runs hit off him, and back yard touchdown passes caught lol. Tim Grimsich, a UConn DB in the early 1980s was also a neighbor, probably has the record for INTs off Young.

Narrowing to 5 miles of where I live.
Roger Staubach
Barry Larkin
Louis Orr

The highlight of my best college buddy's athletic career was his interception off of Young. I said I didn't think he played defense. He said, "I didn't. Greenwich was winning by about 10 TD's with Young still in the game chucking, our coach got so pissed he took out the starters and put in the 3rd stringers. I was at safety and I never played safety before so I just stood in the middle of the field. Steve skyed the ball on a crossing pattern and hit me between the numbers!" Any YAC? "Bump no, I went down!"

Born CT raised family in NJ now in FL, so I don't necessarily relate to FL athletes but how about
Emmitt Smith
Neon Deion
Doc Gooden

Residing in NJ now as well. Hurley town to local athletes I have associated with include:
  1. Terry Dehere
  2. Kenny Britt
  3. Bob Hurley Sr

I’m not sure who outsiders would associate from the greater Buffalo/WNY area, but the 3 greatest athletes from here are probably
Warren Spahn
Gronk
Patrick Kane

I’m really not into Arizona Sports especially U of A . I took Spanish at ASU so hating them is mandatory.
But Since I have have a soft spot for College Coaches
Lute Olsen has to be on the list
Jim Palmer one of my heroes is from Scottsdale has to be on the list
The third is a tie
I loved Larry Fitzgerald and the fact he played in the Big. East made it easier
But I also loved Steve Nash considered the best Suns player and just a great PG
Honorable mention to Cliff Robinson in the Suns too 25 for obvious reasons and Charles Barkley
Arizona has produced so many Olympic athletes from swimmers to gymnastics
