McCutchen over Willie Stargell or Roberto Clemente? I'd even accept Barry Bonds over McCutchen.

No Steelers? That's just criminal for a place known most for the Steelers.

A guy who has played less than a year in MLB?

Yikes, this is one terrible list! :)
As a non Pittsburgh guy the first person who comes to my mind is Cutch. Over anybody. Not sure why. He's so likable.

If the Steelers left Pittsburgh, it would be a better place to live.

I really don't care about your opinion. It's my list, and since I've been living here (which came at the very end of Lemieux), these are the three guys whom I chose as being the most talked about athletes in town (in the positive sense, not for raping, beating women, or generally being an a.hole).

You both should be punished for not naming Dan Marino.

Tony Dorsett too but Dan Marino is Mr. Pittsburgh.

Whether or not there is anybody from these states on the yard, I'm generally curious what people would say for:

Iowa
Nebraska
Mississippi
South Dakota

.-.
Where in hell did you come up with that conclusion?
Marino is the best athlete ever from Pittsburgh. He grew up there, dominated in football and baseball, and dominated at Pitt.

Donovan will have a great career playing a long time in Portland and maybe some other cities but he'll always be Mr. Connecticut.

I'll go geographical. Out on the Panhandle of Florida.

Roy Jones Jr
Emmett Smith
Derrick Brooks

High Honorable Mention- Justin Gatlin, Michelle Snow, Don Sutton.
Edit: Add in Jerry Pate and Bubba Watson for golf.

RJJ was the best boxer in the world for over a decade. Emmitt is Emmitt. Always showed up for the big games.

Brooks is class act all the way.

That top 3 is diverse and impressive. It'd be cool to have some kind of metric to find which specific geographic area produced the most impactful athletes.

Fair enough, it's your list. I get where the disconnect is. You're judging from a different set of criteria and you don't like the Steelers.

My wife tells a different story. She was at Pitt for the '76 NC with Dorsett. If you ask her, Marino is best known for gagging away Pitt's chances at an NC during the 1981 season.

And the actual answer to best athlete from Pittsburgh has been Honus Wagner since forever. 2nd place is probably Montana. Some would say Arnold Palmer, but Latrobe is too far out for an actual suburb.

And Willie Stargell is not. Hmm.

This could go on and on. It's what came to @storrsroars. "Remember, there is no right or wrong answer

Different people use different criteria. For example, I did not use greatest athletes in Florida. I used athletes around my current location, which is Brevard County, so I have the list of:
Tim Wakefield
Kelly Slater
Doug Flutie

Kelly could be the greatest surfer, but Tim and Doug are not the greatest in their sports. But since they live or lived near me, they easily come to mind.

Maine -

I wasn't born in Maine, so I'll never be considered a Mainer by the natives, but I have lived over half of my (almost) 75 years in "Vacationland." It's a pretty thin list, I think, but here's what I've got -

Some kid named Cooper (sorry)
Joan Benoit Samuelson

Tie - UMaine coaches John Winkin (baseball) and Shawn Walsh (hockey) who put the school on the national radar in 1980's and '90's.

Montana isn't from Pittsburgh. If he was from Pittsburgh and played at Pitt I would certainly put him on the list.

He's from a town that's next door to a large park where I often take my dog. Grew up in and played QB in Monongohela, one of the more significant mill towns in these parts (and name of one of the three rivers). Close enough for rock n roll. In fact, Ringgold HS in Monongohela renamed its football stadium Joe Montana Stadium.

He's as much Pittsburgh as Joe Namath or Jim Kelly. Along with Montana, Unitas and Marino, it's why they call the WPIAL the conference of HoF QBs (and that's not including Bruce Gradkowski or Mark Bulger).

From Washington State and the great PNW, 3 all time great, Hall of Famers;
John Stockton
Ryne Sandberg
John Elway

I went with Hamill because she was a couple of years older than me and, well you know.
Must have been the haircut although Calvin was a better baton twirler. BTW, I still love to hear Steve Young talk about the mean streets of Greenwich when he is on PTI or Dan Patrick. Always a good interview.
