Can someone explain to me how UCLA got this banner class? It's kind of out of nowhere.
Cori Close joined the program 3 years ago taking over from Nikki Caldwell. Nikki had some decent seasons, but IMHO she left the cupboard pretty bare. Close had been the "Chris Dailey" of FSU for the prior 7 years but has California roots having spent the previous 9 seasons at UCSB, having graduated from there too.
She didn't land anyone of note that I'm aware of in her first 2 seasons (her highest rated recruit in 2013 was a 4-star #94 rated kid). But California had 5 of the top 40 kids hailing from there, and she landed 4 of them. The other recruit (Caldwell) is from Texas.
I don't know much about her coaching ability or how good a recruiter she was at her prior schools. I'm not sure how involved she was in recruiting Natasha Howard, or a couple other really good players FSU had, but if she was the lead recruiter for them, then she came to UCLA with a really solid recruiting skill set...
