Phil could definitely use more strength in his legs on his vert. He had a hard time finishing when guys were actually around him. Showing a video of him dunking with a running start on a 2 on 0 says nothing about his jumping ability. He's 6'9.

This. It's the improvement at exploding in traffic or through contact. Doesn't require getting huge, just powerful. I watched a 106 lb women deadlift 315 lbs last weekend. Her quads were the size of my calves but she lifted almost 3X her body weight.

It will all depend upon Amida's ability to stay out of foul trouble. Phil's not really the incumbent, as Amida was truly the starter last year. KO wanted to maximize the chances that Amida would be available in the last 5 minutes of the game, and the best way to do that was to not start him.

I agree with what you are saying to an extent as protecting Amida was often a big part of the plan, but there were a number of key matchups for which Phil was the much better fit. He was a big key in games against MSU and others where his ability to guard the perimeter and fight to hold his ground against bigger guys was essential (and things that Amida could not do nearly as well). I see Amida being more of a specialist until he can get stronger and has more of a well-rounded game (i.e. better rebounding, better lateral movement, less easily moved around).

I still wonder if anyone on the coaching staff spoke with PN about the concept of passing the ball to NG on this play rather than driving half the length of the court.

But it worked out:)
A lot of bigs are instructed to just take it to the hole if they have an unobstructed route. A big trying to make the extra pass on the move, in that case, is seen as extra risk that exceeds the value. The view is that the big will score or get fouled taking it. The chances of a TO on the pass reduce the expected return to below that of the big taking it himself.

I just posted that gif in jest. Yes, I saw the Kentucky game. Yes, I know a 6'9" player dunking with a running start doesn't prove much. Yes, I agree that Phil does need to work on his explosiveness. Figured he should get credit for one of the most memorable dunks of the season.

I wish I could donate some of my weight to PN. It wouldn't make him any stronger, but it'd make it that much harder to move him out of position.
