Per ESPN McNeeley is going pro

Liam is a much more well rounded player after just 1 season than Hauser was after 4, which is why Liam is a lottery pick and Hauser went undrafted.

Hauser's turned himself into a good NBA player but Liam will start out his career with more tools in his belt. His offensive repertoire contains moves that Hauer took years to develop.
Ok we will see where he ends up. I don't see him being a top star NBA player. I see him more as complementary piece on an NBA team. He will probably be a better overall scorer due to his ability to dribble but he still isn't a sure thing. Steph to me was a sure thing. Of course I thought Hawkins was a sure thing too so it is just opinions from us right now. I think he will get drafted first round for sure but not sure he is a lottery pick. I think 15-25 is where he might fall or end of lottery.

Liam is a much better prospect than Hawkins. I don't think that's up for debate.
Hmmm ok again I will disagree. Hawkins was a lottery pick and a great shooter going in and a quicker athlete. I still think it was the right decision for Liam but let's not say he isn't sure thing NBA superstar at the next level.

Literally, no one has said LM is a "slam dunk NBA superstar"

Geez Louise...

He was asked to shoulder a huge load this year given some of the deficiencies in the team and more than he should have had to shoulder. Wish him the best and excited to see him develop on the NBA.
That, and, he was key in instilling the aggressive demeanor Hurley and co. want in their players. Pretty awesome to see a freshman with that much moxie to pair with his skills/IQ.

I'm the first to say when a guy is ready, that it's time to go. I really want him to have a long career not just a rookie deal, and the NBA is not a place to develop. He has a lot to work on. I wish him the best. With that said, the silver lining is if LM came back, we'd have lost JS, so I'm happy.

Well that is what you were making him out to be. We all have players we like better at UConn and while I'm glad he played for UConn I don't think he lived up to the expectations coming in for me at least. Really good player but with some serious warts that will need to be addressed at the next level for him to succeed.

No, there are a lot of roles between "key reserve" and "NBA all star" lmao

Bad decision but expected

I'm interested where he will be drafted as though he showed spurts of greatness he had issues too. His ability to shoot from the outside, drive and score wasn't top level while his defense wasn't good. He has skills but not sure how NBA GM's will see him at the next level. I guess i see him more in the 15-25 range now. It would of been nice to see him come back and work on some of his defiencies but with all that money staring him in he face for being a first round pick I understand why he left.
The highlighted part is somewhat like saying, "He's small, but he's slow." Then again, I suppose this is a better than a Larry David-type posting something like, "Why should anybody wish well for a guy who's leaving the team?"

I was previously in the mindset that if he wasn’t a lottery pick, he should come back and lead the team next year

But to be honest, it’s no secret we’re looking for a high impact PG that will get shots up. Solo is coming back as one of the best shooters in the game that is looking to expand his offensive game. Tarris is going to get a lot of touches next year. And we have 5 star shooter Braylon Mullins coming in

Liam took 11.5 shots a game, is there room for him to take more and make a bigger name for himself next year? I’m not sure. If a team will take him lottery or mid first round despite the efficiency issues, then it seems like a good decision to secure that NBA contract now, come in as a movement shooter role, and expand the scoring abilities in the league. Especially since he has a teammate and mentor in Karaban who got burned this year by coming back when he could have gone and hurting his stock

Congrats and best of luck to Liam!

Agreed….put him in the Daniel Hamilton category
Ehhh. Dan Hurley is (only) mostly forgotten because he’s in the Siberian C league. If McNeeley has a solid NBA career I’m sure we’ll claim him proudly. At least I know I will.

He is saying that if he had to come back that UConn isn't a good school to develop your NBA future. Kids want to be 1 and done if potential lottery picks and if they don't that will be used against the school whether true.
I know you're just quoting him; but that would jump to top ten asinine BY takes ever and that's saying something.

Would take Rutgers AL right off the list.

Definitely got asked to shoulder way too much of the load this season, so some of his warts were showing through. Think NBA scouts will go back to his high school tape (like they did a bit with Castle) and see a guy who is a good complimentary player on a team; he should play better when he’s not expected to be such a focal point of the offense. He fits well around other guys, excited to see what’s next.
You’re saying he says nice things about the other players?

I think he needs one more year, but that is just me.

Hawkins is hanging on by a thread as rotation player in the NBA. He is one of the worst shooters in the NBA in terms of actually making baskets.

Unlikely

Yep which is a surprise to many on the board. Just saying there is no such as sure thing NBA player and even harder being a star player there.

Why are some of you so miserable? Be happy for a kid who played supremely hard for us and at times completely carried us this year as he fulfills his dreams.

.-.
I don't really know what his long term Husky legacy will turn out to be. He missed 5 weeks. He had flashes of brilliance before and after, but he also really looked like a freshman at other times. He didn't have a necessarily "memorable" final few weeks.

I enjoyed watching him. Talented kid for sure, with a good hard nose for the game. No doubt he's going to be drafted high enough to never merit returning for another season, but I feel like his time here will turn out to be "meh" as years pass.
At the end of the day, his primary legacy will be a UConn player that got drafted first round and maybe lottery, and hopefully has a successful NBA career. Kind of like Drummond. That's not a bad thing, good for our reputation and good for him. Its unfortunate that his legacy won't be tied to a successful UConn basketball season, but that's not really his fault anymore than it is the entire team and coaching staff. This was unfortunately a season where the team had definite flaws and was not greater than the sum of its parts, and a freshman, even one of his caliber, could be expected to carry the team, especially when he was out half the season.

Nothing wrong with that. So, like Daniel Hamilton.

I'm seeing a few comparisons to Hamilton. I don't really get it. If Liam McNeeley returned and had a season as bad, if not worse, than his first season, then the comparison would be valid.

Does anybody think that would happen? Or can we agree he's a super talented player whose freshman season got derailed by an injury?

Yeah I was just explaining to that guy what he meant. Not that I agree.

Hopefully he gets drafted to a team that doesn’t throw him into the deep end of the pool right away. He needs a lot of work but has potential. I think a stint in the G or D league ( whatever they call it these days) to develop his game will be very beneficial for him. I wish him well. He was a good UConn Husky.
