Oregon State is 29-16 in the Pac 10 over the last 5 years, with one losing season. Oregon State is averaging almost 6-3 in Pac 10 over that stretch. Why wouldn't you want to do that?

Do you know anything about college football?

Part of the problem was that the pass plays took too much time to develop. I noticed a shift last night, and I'm encouraged by it. It looks like PP is running somthing like the Patiots 2001 Tom Brady offense. Slants and quick read pass plays. Short throws with the ball not going more than 10-15 yards. Williams is a great fit in a scheme like that and obviously showed it last night.
Let's see how this plays out. I agree he deserves a chance to adjust and recruit his own guys. He has the defense playing very well. If he can get McEntee to thrive in a short passing and running ball control offense, this team can still be competitive. Vandy hung with South Carolina a long time yesterday on the road. They're decent.
 
Vanderbilt had a grand total of 77 yards of total offense.
 
Let Coach P have a few reruiting classes of his own before calling for his head.

The one thing I do blame the staff for so far is letting JMac throw on 3rd down at Vandy when our D was dominating them. If we ran the ball on that down and punted no way Vandy would have scored the rest of the game.

He was left with no experienced QB and no real experienced RB.

No wonder the offense looks about as exciting as paint drying.

The one thing I would say is that the staff has to let Nebrich play to see if he is the future QB.

If he is not we have to think about at least adding a JUCO for next year.
 
Guys - Oregon St didn't win more than four games during a 25 year stretch in the 70's - 90's. They've been historically miserable. Wazzu also had Bledsoe once upon a time, even a blind squirrel can find a nut once in a while. PP is pretty close to being a blinds squirrel, I don't want to wait around for him to find his nut.

So no I would not hire him, people are saying the clock is ticking on P , it is probably ticking a lot louder for Edsall at UMD after getting trounced at home by Temple. I am sure when they fired 9 win coach and hired him, UMD was expecting more. Edsall also inherrited a stud QB. How good would we be with Danny O'brien?

Coach PP is not lighting them up. Again, there was confusion on and off the field. These are just basic signs of core problems in management, discipline and preparation. The O line should have been dominating but they looked uninspired and dejected. This is a failure of leadership.

With 10 years invested, we cannot afford or accept going backwards. I go to the jack welch school of slow to hire be quick to fire.

PP has already demonstrated he does not get his players to play up a level. He does the opposite. All the recruiting in the world will not make us great...think ND. It is leadership, execution and a champion's mindset that makes the ultimate difference.

I'd be telling PP you are a very short rope. Performance is unacceptable and unless you show significant improvement, you better get your resume in order...good luck I'm rooting for you to succeed.

Agree - but we still have same O line coach don't we ? - so I think he should be questioned as much as PP

This is something that needs to be resolved quickly. PPasq is nowhere near as hands on as his predecessor was (there are advantages and disadvantages to both philosphies). The offense has been completely delegated to Deleone (who is in the booth, which really requires someone, likely Moorehead to be the 1A offensive coordinator) and the defense to Brown. The lines of communication from Deleone to Moorehead to the QB needs to be cleaned up considerably. Both DeLeone and Brown need to simplify things a bit until the players are more experienced within each coach's system. The offense tries to do too much (many things that we are not capable of) and it makes us more inept. The defense tries to show too many looks and when the opponent goes into a no-huddle we cannot matchup quickly enough.

There is quite a bit of tweaking necessary but this all falls in the guy in charge (Pasqualoni).
 
This is a stupid discussion. Discuss whether you think the staff is off to a good start -- fine. But this is UConn -- a decent man (which P is) isn't being fired in less than three seasons. So even raising it just hurts with morale and recruiting.

You would be saying the same thing if Nick Saban was our coach. Who ever the coach is needs more than about 8 months and 4 games to make a rational objective view of the teams progress. You need a minimum of 2 full seasons and 3 recuiting classes.

Concern over miscues and questionable coaching decisions by Coach P 4 games into his tenure is more than fair. Declaring him on the hot seat 4 games into his tenure (and considering these are the previous coach's players) is ludicrous. And this is a guy that just set the record for most coaching wins in Big East history.
 
My OPINION:

Paul Pasqualoni is our transition Program HC. He's not going to be here long term (5 year Max) and he is going to set up, on top of Edsall's good foundation, a solid way forward.

DeLeone is what I question today. This offense ... this Position personnel choices are questionable. I'm OK with the 3 headed QB: we had little choice. McCombs ... and not using Shoemate or JJL or Foxx ... is just dumb. And we need to keep Tebucky & Geremy Davis in rotation. We are going to need them to develop. The OLine? They did not go from good to bad. Something is not using them well.

That D? I'm scared of the drop off from Blidi WW to Wilburn. Two solid CBs was great & gave some utility to out pressure. The LBs are gradually getting better week to week. But ... I really don't like some of the movement at the snap. For instance, I thought jesse Joseph, at atimes, had no idea where to position himself.

Buffalo is far better than bottom 15. They had a better QB than us; far better WRs; and a good RB. Their DLine and LBs were good. They are upper level MAC ... and probably 70-80 in rank.
 
You people do realize the football program's historical record is below .500, right? 22 games below. It's going to take few or several straight winning seasons to get above .500.
 
Boy oh boy.....I wonder where the basketball program would be if we dumped Calhoun after his first four games, or first season. And its a lot easier to get a spark to a BB program than a FB program. You're talking about meshing any five athletes to work cohesively at a given time in BB as opposed to 22 + in football.

PP was did not leave UC with a lot of talent. Ten years into the program he was still signing a number of players few others offered. With the lack of talent.....and experience on this team......we'd have the same record with RE....or worse.

No experience at QB......the OL is not performing too well because it lost two starters.......and will loose two more next year......it all starts there. No time to throw.....can't open holes consistently.....I don't think I can remember an o-line performing being so pourous.

What BCS school in the BE has not had problems when you have to replace QB's, offensive linemen, receivers, etc. And that is talking just on the offensive side.

PP is recruiting what some experts may suggest is one of UC's best ranked classes. He's is trying to develop an offense and defense that provides more excitement than high school football. The players are not there for it to work perfectly. Doesn't mean he should wait until they are.....I'm all for an upgrade in talent and performance and see the jar as half full as opposed to half empty. A couple of years from now I may alter my opinion of PP.......but right now I'll use the same phrase Rocky Balboa used as an uder talented fighter facing tougher competition "Go for it!" Rocky lost his first fight......but won the battle.

He didn't compare P to Calhoun, his very valid point was that Calhoun's record in his first year at UCONN was 9-19, and if there were message boards back then there certainly would have been people calling for him to be fired.

Maybe someday we will compare Casey Cochran to Chris Smith.

I don't think anyone has called for the coach to be fired.

If at the end of the year the team is 3-9 and is still a disorganized mess... BL is right, it won't happen - but that is potentially just compounding mistakes.

JC went through his share of fan outrage. Even as he climbed the ladder of success he was criticized as the coach who couldn't recruit big men. UConn was nicknamed the donut team. Then as he got his teams into the NCAA and they did well he was attacked for not being able to get into the final four.

Even after 2 NC's there were a number of fans who felt JC was all through after the 2010 season and that he couldn't recruit any longer. It didn't matter that UConn went to the Final Four in 2009.

Every team and every sport is filled with fans who fit the category of "what have you done for me lately".
I don't know if UConn has a 3 quaterback problem. Maybe like every team it has a Monday morning quaterback problem.
 
I get tired of hearing about this team has no talent. I think Deleone has regressed our offense. This is the same garbage Randy ran. And Coach Pasqualoni seems to be as stubborn as Edsall. We just beat Buffalo 17-3 and he thought it was a great improvement. I know there have been alot of mistakes by the players but the coaching has been a joke. Wish he had been stuck in the elevator for the duration of the game.
 
Rule one of criticizing someone is to do so coherently. By definition, you can't "regress our offense" by running "the same garbage Randy ran." If you are doing the same thing you are not regressing.

I agree with BL (and you, maybe) that this whole discussion is stupid, but I have to ask...

When Calhoun was hired at UConn, was he the winningest coach in the history of Big East?

If you want to compare Calhoun to a UConn football coach compare him to Edsall. Circumstances around the programs were similar when they both started. Pasqualoni is the winningest Big East coach who is inheriting a team that has won recent conference championships. There's no comparison to what Calhoun took over in 1986 and what Coach P took over in 2011. None.

Before someone puts words in my mouth, Edsall is a good (not great) college coach. Calhoun is a hall of famer. I'm not comparing their performance or ability, just the state of the programs they took over on day 1 at UConn.

Should have hire that guy from Arkansas (McGee?). An offensive cach with connections in the South where football is king. If Coach P was hired to to make CT High School coaches happy then it's a terrible decision. If anything was learned from the Fiesta Bowl today's football is high octane and Uconn is still running on regular.
 
I am biting my tongue bigtime with Coach P. I agree it's impossible to "regress" our offense. We were kind of at rock bottom from the getgo.

Scoring on 35 on a I-AA with barely enough scholarship players to give us credit for an actual win was the warning signal for me that this team was alot like the 2005 team.

I am just hoping that Johnny Mac can grow and improve. Lastly, football season is too short. Enjoy it while you have it.
 
I'm not a huge Coach P fan, and there are definitely things to criticize, but I'm not sure who could've turned this team into a Top 25 team this year with all of the problems we have. Between O-line, no good RB, no good QB, decent but not great WR's, a great D, and an entirely new system... I mean... I know people expect miracles, and we've gotten pretty used to winning at UConn, but our football program isn't exactly storied and it's going to take time (and some up and down years) to get there.

I mean, how do you think Texas fans felt about last year? And they're supposed to win.

Not just that, the premise is entirely inaccurate. This offense produces open recievers left and right. We just don't have a QB to take advantage of it.
 
every other coach was the 'right choice' because they aren't here and they are the unknown. its the same reason why, to some, Nebrich is our qb savior, because he's played the least. fans always think freshman are better than they are, rookies in the pros are going to be their saviors, other coaches are better than ours.

i don't like getting into the habit of worrying about things that aren't in our control, P is our coach for now and Mac is our qb. We need to show progression from week to week. If we don't see progression after a couple full seasons, either on the field or drastically improved recruiting, than i'll start to worry about P as a coach. but after 4 weeks, all of which we were in the games, i'm not ready to fire him... even tho, i admittedly am not optimistic about him but most of that is because i despise his negativity on the sidelines... he just doesn't look the part of a leader.
