Paige's Wings Page (merged thread)

I am NEVER one to complain about refs(not even that AE moving screen against Iowa), but what happened to her last night was INSANE. Especially from a team coached by Stephanie White, who CRIES at press conferences about how Clark is defended. I don't ever want to hear any Fever players, coaches, or fans complain about officials, because that team is PAMPERED by the refs. From White to Cunningham to Hull to Boston to Howard to......well I can't say Mitchell because she plays 0 defense.
It was almost like the Fever with Clark watching on the bench wanted to demonstrate how other teams handle CC by handling Paige the same (worse?) once they realized the refs were hesitant to call fouls and stop the action. When Paige turned the ball over as PG it was when two players literally tackled her around mid court right in front of a ref. Inexcusable.

There was one play last night the likes of which I can't remember ever seeing. Late in the second, I think it was Natasha Howard barreling toward the basket. She appeared to be fouled by Haley Jones, but the shot went up, Paige got the rebound and made an outlet pass. The refs blew the whistle a full FIVE seconds after the foul (I rewound the DVR and timed it). Jones was on her butt out of bounds when the whistle blew. Nobody had any idea what the call was for another 5-10 seconds, till the refs put Howard on the line.

I love Li who was almost recalled to China because she wasn't getting enough playing time with the Storm. She is the best player on the Chinese National team, and they wanted her to play more since they don't have access to her for now. As soon as she requested a trade, I was hoping that the Wings would get her to Dallas. She is learning every day, has good moves and footwork under the hoop, and has a really nice 3 pt shot. One more thing, I give her a lot of credit for taking interviews because she seems to be struggling with her English, but that doesn't stop her from talking to the media. The Wings should protect her in next year's expansion draft, and if not, they are crazy.

I know there have been comments about Paige at some point in her career becoming a coach. I too may have shared that observation after seeing Coach P at UConn during her rehab days and more but I have reconsidered. ...
i like your thinking. she also could follow maya's path: take on a tough mission that serves the greater society. ... some would say coaching bball would be a major shortchanging of her potential.

I wonder how much Cheryl will appreciate Dijonai's layup "proficiency " and her penchant for hero ball on offense...
I think it's a really good move for Dallas, not so sure about Minny. But Reeve won't put up with Carrington's schtick (play, personality, etc.) for 1 second. Dijonai will either get on board, or ride the pine.

Carrington will be a free agent next season. She never played up to form for the Wings. She now has an opportunity to make an impact for a potential WNBA championship team while also raising her value in free agency. It’s all on her.
I too see it as a win - win.

This includes a win for Carrington; she goes from one of the worst, to being a part of the best team in the league. It may turn out to be fantastic for her. It certainly is an opportunity for her unlike in Dallas! The flip side is that the Wings get Diamond Miller who I believe will have one year of contract left, so in essence, she is around for the Wings next season. She is a big guard as opposed to Carrington who is smaller in stature, and she too has a new opportunity that maybe wasn't there on the best team. She has been playing about 10 minutes per game for the Lynx who have a deep roster, but in those ten minutes she is shooting 48% for the season including 58% from 3-pt line. I believe that she is a solid player, and as mentioned the Wings get her for not only this season but also next.

Karlie is a throw in and frankly adds nothing for the Wings, she is a free agent at the end of the year and out for the rest of the season with an injury. But the Wings also get a second-round draft in '27, and recall that by that time the WNBA will have a couple new teams. With those new teams, there will be another 24 players in the league. As opposed to say two years ago when virtually no second-round player ended up making a squad (thus a 2nd round choice being more or less a throw in nothing burger), by '27 these caliber players absolutely will be making the cut and add value!

This really seems like a win-win-win-win situation.

Two months in a row. Should the W just give her the ROY now or wait until the end of the season? ;)
If season ended today, Paige would get it, but I wouldn't count out Citron and Iriafen just yet.

Recency bias can sometimes outweigh body of work.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s even close. Citron or Iriafen would have to play out of their minds the last month of the season and Paige would have to have a complete collapse for either Mystic rookie to win ROY.

I don’t see that happening. Paige has been incredibly consistent on a really mediocre team. The ROY looks like it is in the bag.

The stars were out in Brooklyn tonight to watch both the Liberty as well as Paige. CD showed up and chatted with Paige after the game. Paige with her usual strong game put up 21 pts, pulled down 8 rebounds and dished out 4 assists.

But NY killed the Wings from the arc as they moved the ball like a veteran team and the Wings just seemed to get lost on D, as their roster and lineup continues to be in flux. It’s difficult to be “connected” on D when every game involves a different lineup and player rotation.

Swipe..

For the 2nd game in a row against the Liberty, Paige abuses 31 year-old Stephanie Talbot 1 on 1. In this case, as soon as Paige recognized she was being guarded by Talbot, she started dealing and smoked her. Talbot otherwise had a solid game, but she clearly can’t guard Paige.
