Paige's Wings Page (merged thread)

Paige’s path to wisdom has gone from sitting at the foot of the Dalai Lama of basketball for 5 years to now getting advice from the guy who sells newspapers at the corner…….;)
If you were to waste your time and go back to my comment on his performance at the opening presser, you'd see me being even harder on this "friend" green X appointment.

I'd add JJ, Luisa, Zaza & Haley in that category (heck, any talented ballplayer who is open to growth).
One of the intriguing dynamics that we will see after the end of this season in the W is that with an unprecedented number of veteran free agents and a new salary cap, many top players will be able to go wherever they want, to play with whomever they want as a teammate.

I don’t know of any player who doesn’t like Paige. She is connected to every UConn alum, as well as all the outstanding players who were her teammates on USA basketball, and she seems to make friends with both new teammates and opponents about as easy as can be.

Think about how she recruited Azzi to UConn. Also consider that Arike, who will have lots of options next season, might just want to stay in Dallas and play with Paige for the next 3 seasons, particularly since the two of them appear to be learning how to play off each other.

Since Paige won’t be leaving Dallas anytime soon, she might just have to recruit her own championship team to join her in Big D.

I agree with you! Previously I suggested that perhaps Phee and Sabrina would elect to transfer to Dallas at the end of the season. And add to that a potential first player draft choice of Lauren Betts.

This is just a small sampling, but the YouTube kinda puts things into perspective of what might be available: Who would you wanna ...

Something else to consider. Dallas currently has 7 players that will still be on their rookie contracts next season. That’s considerably more than most every team in the W. While Dallas probably won’t bring back all 7, even if they let 1 or 2 go, they will probably replace them with a rookie or 2 next season.

As a result, Dallas will probably have more money to sign veteran free agents than any other team. The Wings can make some real noise bringing in 4-5 top veterans. If that was the plan all along, my hat is off to GM Curt Miller.

Carrington went to NC State. Her last game there was the thrilling OT loss to UConn in the NCAA tournament. Edwards did not foul her on the last shot.
Yeah let's not even talk about that double OT Elite 8 loss where #1 NC State had to play in Connecticut despite being the 1 seed in virtually a road game. I don't recall there being a controversial whistle/non-whistle. End of regulation was 61 all and State had the last shot but UConn had great D and State had to settle for a deep desperation 3.

End of OT 1 State was down 3 with 8ish seconds and inbounded to Perez who made a great play looking left and then tossing it back to the far right corner and Jackia Brown Turner splashed a 3 at the buzzer over Paige to send it to a 2nd OT. Then UConn prevailed scoring a bucket with 5 seconds left to go up by 4 and seal the victory. Truly heart breaking for those of us that bleed red. That was a very talented team full of upper classmen.

The facilities are not good in Dallas, they play in a 6000 seat mid-major arena, were supposed to move to Dallas next year but has been pushed back a year. I hope any free agent will look at the big picture with Paige on the team, and a few promising young players to boot.

Adding to yours above OD, what is so unique about Paige is her constant upbeat personality. She enjoys just helping others and making them shine. All the UConn players loved being around her because she was always simply fun to be around. Although looked at as a rookie, her positive, can-do attitude and hard work is starting to win over even some of the vets including Arike and DiJonai. If she stays in Dallas it will eventually become her team not much different than Phee who Paige has said she admires greatly is to the Lynx.

My goodness, the Wings (except for Paige) were beyond terrible tonight! Only 1 three pointer made until the final minute. It seemed like they were 0 for infinity on layups and shots within4 feet. The team, which is supposed to be a good rebounding team, was obliterated on the boards. Add that to Paige getting creamed by a Boston hip check and the strategic oddity of Arike not playing in the fourth quarter (she was only 1 for 6 from the field)...They lost by 10, but the only reason that the game was that close was that they were a brilliant 24 for 25 from the line.
Paige was the only individual bright spot: shooting 7 for 14 from the field, 8 of 8 from the line, 4 rebounds, 4 assists (she would have had about 10 if her teammates were able to hit layups and open jump shots), 2 steals and only 1 turnover.
In Paige we trust; her team - not so much...

Apologies: I neglected to mention their customary non-existent defense...
I kept my eye on Quinerly for much of the game. I was just astounded how lost she got on D sometimes. Like literally so far behind her mark that when the mark went to the right side and looped around to the left side, JJ was right there waiting for her. She went under Boston's pick when Boston was six feet away from Aari McDonals, who sank an undefended three-pointer.

Carrington had a really rough game. Two or three thrown-away passes within a couple of minutes in the 3rd-4th and really should've gotten a T because of her non-stop mouthing off to the refs.

Wow. That seems unprecedented. I agree that this guy has no business coaching a professional sports team but to get booed in an opposing arena for being inept is unheard of. That's usually reserved for guys like Hurley and Geno that say and do controversial things that rub people the wrong way.

Game was ugly. Although she tries to keep it positive and upbeat, except with respect to maybe - maybe - one or two Paige has to be extremely frustrated with this team and that must include the coach. IMO, it goes beyond the coach and up to the person who brought him in. Yes, it starts at the GM level. The entire structure and mission for the Wings needs to be looked at critically by the owners and decisions made because it is not disciplined basketball at all. It just plain isn't working. I will continue to watch them when I can and shake my head but hope that with the completely unbelievable holding, pushing and shoving being allowed by what are supposed to be referees that Paige doesn't get seriously hurt before their dreadful season is over.

I am NEVER one to complain about refs(not even that AE moving screen against Iowa), but what happened to her last night was INSANE. Especially from a team coached by Stephanie White, who CRIES at press conferences about how Clark is defended. I don't ever want to hear any Fever players, coaches, or fans complain about officials, because that team is PAMPERED by the refs. From White to Cunningham to Hull to Boston to Howard to......well I can't say Mitchell because she plays 0 defense.

The silver lining: this is Paige’s preparation for an eventual coaching career. You need to learn from the best. But it doesn’t hurt to see what bad coaching looks like too.

Also didn't happen. I was there. Influencers looking to go viral - who cares about facts? And honestly: I'm probably in the top 5% of dialed in Valkyries fans (and definitely in the top 1% of LOUDEST), and there's not a coach in this league I'd specifically boo at the intros. While I love my fellow Ballhallans, most are not SO in the weeds that they are going to collectively boo a coach from another team because they think that coach is mishandling his roster. At most, there was a little light booing of the away team generally, because, well, you know, SPORTS.

Could it be that the Wings are tanking for the draft. As I pointed out in an earlier post on this thread, the Wings will be holding a lot of cards for next season. They will have 7 players still on rookie contracts, lots of money to spread around to 3 or 4 veteran free agents and possibly the #1 overall draft choice…..Betts?

The one potential problem in this strategy is Paige. She continues to play at such a high level, has seemingly taken over the coaching responsibilities from Koclanes and is generally such an inspiration to most of her teammates that the Wings are a danger to pull off an upset on any given night.

I know there have been comments about Paige at some point in her career becoming a coach. I too may have shared that observation after seeing Coach P at UConn during her rehab days and more but I have reconsidered.

While Paige could certainly offer a great deal as a coach I think her better position would be further up the chain as the head of some organization for womens basketball (womens sports in general?) where her intelligence and leadership could be instrumental in setting the course to achieve the higher salaries, better revenue sharing and improved benefits that are being sought by WNBA players now but little doubt will continue to be issues as well in the future. But that's a long way away. For now, I will just enjoy her skills on the basketball court.
