Paige's Wings Page (merged thread)

Makes sense, the Wings play Monday against New York on ESPN.

It is the last back to back that the Wings will have this season.

Paige played 37 minutes on Friday and must be exhausted. Earlier posts suggest she may have tweaked an ankle as well.

After today they still have eighteen more games. They have no shot at the playoffs and I wish they would limit her minutes to 30 or less. She only played 27 against Seattle but 37 the other night.

When you add up all the minutes she played during the 2024-25 championship season, then directly to the W for practice and now games, this kid needs more than one game off. Give her a month off, and don't risk anything for a team that isn't going anywhere this season!

And then after the WNBA season, she goes right on to Unrivaled. That's a pretty tough stretch.

Bueckers will have 4 months off from Sept.11th until mid January. She’ll probably survive.
I had been thinking that Unrivaled started in the late fall right after the WNBA finals, so yeah, she will get a break. Your point that she won't be in the playoffs anyway is duly acknowledged.

IMHO Unrivaled will be much easier. They played 14 games over 2 months excluding the playoffs. The courts are smaller. 3 quarters of 21 minutes total then a 4th quarter till one team wins (11 points more than the team leading at the end of Q3). Then there's the "all star break" where they do the 1x1 competitions. Those are tiring for sure, but I doubt Paige will participate in that...

Having said that, a full month off of rest and recovery wouldn't be a bad thing for Paige after the WNBA season...

3 on 3 isn't even fun to watch. At least the games are short...

(Still wayyyyyy better than soccer... Can't resist digging on that no-hands travesty)

How's this - 6 on 6, basketball / soccer. Put a soccer net under each basket. There's a basketball AND soccer ball in play at the same time.

Since when does Paige have tendinitus in her knee? Because I never heard of Paige having this issue while at Uconn.

If you bought a ticket to a Wings game, and then found out Paige wasn't playing because "she needed a rest," would you feel cheated? Would you want your money back?

Nah, disappointed for sure, but not cheated. Missed days are inherent in sports. Injuries are unpredictable, and when someone "needs a rest" that's kind of a euphemism for borderline injury.

With the WNBA trade deadline fast approaching on August 7, there is an increased amount of speculation about potential trades involving the Wings. One recent article suggests the possibility of Arike to the Valkyries. Golden State is currently the last playoff team, but they have lost all star Kayla Thornton for the season.

The Wings aren’t going to the playoffs and Arike is a free agent next year, so trading Ogunbowle to Golden State makes sense for both teams. Golden State currently has the lowest payroll in the W, so they could easily absorb Arike’s salary for the rest of the season. If I’m GM Curt Miller, I am looking at every possibility to trade any veteran on the team for a draft choice or rookie under contract for multiple seasons.

Speaking of injuries, the number of injured players in the WNBA seems abnormally high. It seems like there are at least three injured players per team, with Chicago Sky recently listing five injured players. Is this normal?

Just about every WNBA player is playing multiple seasons, back to back. The rookies just completed their senior college season and most of the veterans played overseas and/or for Unrivaled. While the continuous competition does not explain every injury, it surely is a contributing factor.

It was announced in advance

I am absolutely glad that she didn't get that day of rest last Friday against the Valkyries! We would have been disappointed for certain.

The fact is that the Dallas Wings play very, very well, and then ... they don't play well at all! This can go game to game, but typically it is even quarter by quarter, or more precisely 7-minute by 7-minute durations throughout the quarters.

Many BY's do not like Arike Ogunbowale, but my observation is that when she plays well that team is very good. Paige is the glue and consistent, Hailey Jones is playing pretty dang good given that she was released on waivers by another team earlier into the season, and Azaiah James is dang good as the other rookie. Those are young players all under contract for years to come. I think that Li Yueru is acceptable, not going to be an all-star, but she plays her position well. Luisa Geiselsöder who is the other Center provides acceptable minutes; I believe she is probably a free agent after the end of the season so probably not long term. The forwards are okay in my opinion, but none are real super-stars.

In my opinion, I would refer to the 'Dangerousness' of this team (both the good danger and the bad dangerous), as revolving around Ogunbowale and how well she is playing. And here is the thing, she is streeeeeaky beyond virtually every other player in the league! You see it in those 7-minute by 7-minute durations throughout the quarters. Wings up by a dozen! Oh, looks like the Valkyries now have it tied up .... ah, Wings pulling away, ... wait, now down by five, oh, down by ten now ...

They don't play defense well, and when they can't outscore the opposition ... "all is lost".

Dallas is embarrassingly bad. They are blowing a 30 point lead. The teams entire offense consists of doing some shakin bake outside the 3 point line and then heaving up a god awful 3 point attempt. It’s basically bad AAU ball.

You must be a “glass half empty” fan, or maybe you just turned on the game during the 4th quarter? ;)

The Wings had to get that lead in order to almost blow that lead, and they were playing one of the best teams in the W, albeit without Stewie. During the first 3 quarters, Dallas played some of the best basketball they have played all season with Paige and Arike playing off each other exceptionally well and everyone on the team contributing. In the end they hung on for the win.

What caused the Wings to lose perspective after being up by 30 in the 3rd? Well, couple obvious issues that were mentioned in the post-game presser but what I found interesting was that Paige did not put shots up in the 4th even when she was open. Instead, time and again after bringing the ball up she would pass off to other players to shoot a clanker and then the entire team lazily fail to get back in transition. Shows you even a 30 point lead can slide away if you let it. They were lucky to come away with a win because a couple of baskets at the end by the Liberty could have made it a nail biter if not a loss.
