Paige's Wings Page (merged thread)

The announcers kept saying "well the only way to stop Paige is to be really physical with her". NOT a fan of that, but it is what it is. In the offseason, Paige (IMHO) needs to spend a LOT of time in the gym. I pray she makes it thru the season injury free, and hopefully getting stronger makes it easier for her to absorb the apparent abuse coming her way...

The entire rookie group at Dallas was sensational. James was a star, and Quinerly was really good. Geiselsoder had a really poor shooting night (1-9) but she's been solid for them as well. The future looks really bright.

I say trade Arike and Dijonai away for another player and a draft pick for next season and go all in on rebuilding. I still think Dallas misses the playoffs and will likely get a good pick (1-4), but getting another one would be great as I think the next class coming out is deep as well. How about Arike and Dijonai for Edwards and Olson from Washington plus their first round pick next season? Would give the Mystics some oomph for a playoff push this season.

Anyway I'm no GM. That's probably a dumb trade idea but I'm sure there is one that could work out. Go after younger players and rebuild.
The Mystics are also in the midst (actually, at the beginning) of a youth movement. Most of their players are 24 or younger, and the only one older than 26 is Dolson.

Arike and Dijonai both have higher USG% than Paige. I understand that Arike is the star of the team, so she can have the ball in hands the most of the time but i just confused what is Dijonai's role. They both shot 36% FG%. It is low efficiency and hurt the team. I also think that they are the problem of this young team.

The situation of Dallas is quite similar as Gold State Warriors got Curry, Green and Thompson and the team decided to trade their star player Mota Ellis and rebuild the team around Curry.

Where are we, at the halfway point of the season? So 75% of the players in the league are under contract for another twenty games, and then they are free of the clubs and the clubs are free of them.

If you were a franchise that is nip-n-tuck, or lacking a key player for the final push of this season, perhaps you make a trade for a big name veteran. But that player would likely just be a rental for a very short period of time.

Edwards is under contract for another two years. If you were Washington’s front office, would you swap her straight across for Arike?

And wouldn’t the Mystics be in a salary cap violation, as Edward’s makes virtually nothing and Arike is towards the top end of the league?

I don’t even think it’s a debate about who to build around. Arike’s contract is up at the end of the year. Paige has been fantastic and offers you versatility in how you can play. I’m not an Arike hater, she’s a baller, but on Dallas’ team there is too much redundancy at the guard positions. The rookies can play, use that money to lock up defensive minded wings and bigs.

Good catch on this, and it makes me wonder. The bottom line for an WNBA player is to survive in the league. Perhaps Carrington thinks this warrants being a greater offensive presence? Yet players like Stokes survive by precisely specializing on defense. Carrington has proven she could offer similar value.

It seems to me this is where the coach and the program’s philosophy comes in. The Wings could have a gem similar to Stokes if they rein Carrington in, while her motivation to best survive would cause her to listen.

On edit: Being a defensive specialist is more valuable in the post. A well run offense will manage to get perimeter shots regardless. A defensive specialist like Carrington could not provide the same value as Stokes. Still, I think Carrington used properly would be worth keeping.

I don't think this is breaking news, but Paige is the star of the team, nor Arike. The team plays better when Arike is not on the floor. She needs to be traded, but the team needs another good shooter for her. Paige and James are not enough.

If I’m the GM or HC if the Wings, I am absolutely thrilled at the play of my 3 rookie guards. I’m starting to think I can build my team around them. I’ll try to keep Hines-Allen and the 2 international Bigs.

Moving Smith was step 1. I think I’m looking everywhere and anywhere to see if I can move Arike & Carrington for either draft picks or a solid player on a rookie contract. I would dump both for Aaliyah if the Mystics will bite.

With the money I save from dumping the veterans, the Wings can make a big splash next year in the free agent market when almost every veteran in the W will be available.

Paige is:

#8 in points per game18.7
#36 in rebounds, 4.4
#6 in assists, 5.7
Tied at 3 in steals, 1.8 (with A’ja Wilson)
#15 in blocks, .9
#6 in efficiency, 20.9 (Phee is #1, Breanna #5)

There aren’t rookie rankings, they’re WNBA rankings for all players

IMHO the Wings need to deal Arike not Carrington as she plays a tough Defense!
Arike shoots too much!
Getting A. Edwards will be a big boost both offense & defensively!
Getting rid of Smith was a big move but lets see if management can "bite the bullet" and trade Arike for a couple younger players and great draft picks!
They have to build the team around Paige!

arike is most likely not tradablehe
she is a high volume shooter with low percentage
who can put up big numbers for a bad team
has not shown the ability to play within the team concept
additionally she is at wnba max salary
yup ... they just can't make the mistake of re-upping her. let her go as soon as possible. :) //// even though paige apparently loves her :(

She is also #4 in Fantasy Points per game, which is the weighted combination of a lot these stats. This really speaks to her all-around game.

And she does this with while having the 3rd highest USG% on her team...

Trade Arike, no brainer, but I think Carrington should be given a chance. She was the winner of the sixth player award I think with the Sun, she's one of the best defenders in the league, and played at Connecticut without Smith as a teammate. I think having her girlfriend on the team may have been a distraction, and besides, having her as an enforcer for Paige would be a good thing. We have seen what has happened to CC, and even though it seems Paige is treated better, the rough coverage will begin and having a player for protection would make sense. I think she can get her mojo back and become the player that she was in Connecticut. Most importantly though, my grandson has a Sun jersey with her name and number, so he wants her to stay. LOL

I can appreciate that Dijonai brings an enforcer mentality to the Wings, but, if she stays, I hope that she has taken the time off to practice her layups and reassess the wiseness of driving into 2 or 3 bigs without any intention of passing off for another player's open shot.

It's at the point where if you need an enforcer on your team, the WNBA will have a limited shelf life. Paige and the rookies on the Wings are fast enough and smart enough to avoid most all of the trouble. The soap opera that's the Fever is just a freaking embarrassment to the sport. Get quick young athletes and the rest won't be able to keep up. I'm almost beginning to think a lot of the fouls with Reese and Cunningham and that ilk are staged, like the WWE. Who was such bad peripheral vision they can't see half this stuff coming?

So while the Mercury will be out for payback after losing to the Wings last Thursday, injuries to both teams will make this an even more intriguing matchup tonight:

Out for Mercury: Cooper (who 33 last week vs Wings), Sabally, and Held

Out for Wings: Carrington, Arike, Tyasha Harris (out for season), and Siegrist

So looks like Wings will go with same rookie-heavy lineup that got them them the w last Thursday.
