I'm not hearing anything about where Azzi is leaning, other than her father likes UConn and both parents know Geno will get the most out of her.

Last year, many people here thought that Brunelle would lead a steady stream of players to Notre Dame. But Horston went elsewhere. So did Boston. So did Jones. So did Bueckers. Of the trio of Brunelle, Bueckers, and Fudd, it was clear to me that the closest relationship was between Paige and Azzi. Some examples: sitting together and chatting extensively while watching the USA Senior team (as Boston, Brunelle, and Van Lith rarely interacted); visiting UConn and perhaps other schools together; Paige visiting D.C. to see Azzi; taking summer vacation together. Those two are very close. Paige would love to play with Azzi. Is it mutual? I'm not sure, but obviously I hope so.

...and next year is next year. That transfer portal is perhaps the biggest player that has yet to dribble a ball.

Correct. As it stands now, from year to year, you never know who will come to your program via the portal. This time last year, no one could/would have imagined that Westbrook would begin the 2019-2020 season in a UConn uniform.

Totally depends. Deja Church already found out that after transferring from Michigan, she will be eligible next season at DePaul. AEH and Shepard found out very late, I know for sure Mississippi State already played a game when AEH found out, I think Shepard’s was similar.

That “green” is small potatoes, such an insignificant amount compared to having a memory of a national championship to savor in your 80s. The WNBA ain’t the NBA. If Stevens opted to WNBA for money, then she probably wasn’t smart enough to play for UConn (I think she was just pissed at being poorly utilized and said the hell with you).

I realize that waivers are judged on a case-by-case basis, UConn is due. If Westbrook can play this coming season, that changes the whole dynamic and outlook on things. A deeper bench, and another savvy and "experienced" player for Geno's pleasure.

I'll step out on a limb here and suggest that it's very possible (better than 50-50) that she starts, depending of course on how much of UConn's offensive/defensive schemes and concepts she can understand and perform before the beginning of the season.

Geno won't put her or anyone else on the floor that is going to be out of place much of the time because they don't know where they are suppose to be. i.e., a full court press is easily broken if just one player is out of place/position. :mad:

Westbrook has a very high BB IQ. I don't think it will take her as long to understand/grasp as the average incoming freshman. Oh btw, Olivia Nelson-Ododa will be the other starter. ;)

I did a little checking to see if Westbrook's and Church's situation was similar in any way. Here's what I found:
Like Westbrook, Church just finished her Sophomore (2018-19) year. She Started all 34 games, averaging 8.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in 26.8 minutes per game, so she could not complain about playing time.

The head coach Kim Barnes Arico just finished her 7th season as the head coach in 2018-19. According to an article in the Detroit News written Friday, July 26, 2019, "Michigan women's basketball coach Kim Barnes Arico's received a contract extension signed earlier this summer. The two-year extension, which takes Barnes Arico through the 2022-23 season", so she's not going anywhere, yet Church's transfer request was granted, and granted early.

There's nothing in the announcement to suggest why she left, or why her waiver was granted. There is no mention of Church's transfer on the Michegan WBB website.

Westbrook's coach (Holly Warlick) was fired on March 27, 2019 (the coach that recruited her, and the coach she went to Tenn to play for), and Westbrook also received a lot of negative feedback and ridicule on social media from fans and program boosters relative to a post-season media interview she did in March.

So based on the comparison, how optimistic should we be? Like I said, UConn is due! :cool:

Who adjudicates the waiver request? Is it a single person or a committee? Is there any transparency? If it is a committee, do we know the members of the committee? Is a vote taken? Are the results of the vote made known? Is the individual requesting the waiver interviewed and permitted to state her case? If denied a waiver, is there a process in which a player or school may appeal that decision? Has this system ever been tested in court?

Finally, are these questions ridiculously naive given that we're talking about the NCAA?

Great questions that we all would like answers to.
 
I just watched a replay of UT against Arkansas. Those of you who have not seen Westbrook play may be very surprised by how good she is offensively. She is as good or better than anyone on UConn's present team, imo. However, her defense has a lonnnngg way to go. Sometimes it seemed non-existent. Before she starts she will have to get a lot better. Get all that Tennessee out of her. Fans are waiting to see Paige and Fudd but, Westbrook and Dangerfield could be lethal.

So you would go with 3 guards counting Williams with an undersized forward for a team that’s short on rebounding?

Yes, until that lineup proved unworkable or insufficient. ONO and Walker may provide all the rebounding necessary. Remember that ONO had a career high 16 rebounds one game, and 145 for the year. 4th best on the team. I'd say she's a very capable rebounder. I expect those numbers (coming off the bench) to go up this season. ;)

Geno would find out real quick, during the first non-exhibition game against Cal (Nov 10) at home. I'd try it for a half. If it doesn't work (they get out rebounded by a significant margin), then make adjustments to begin the second half. No matter what he does, he's not going to lose to Cal at home.

If it goes well, try it again the next game against Vanderbilt on the road. That's Dangerfield's homecoming game. He won't lose that one either. If UConn (Geno) decides to "run n' gun, most teams may find it hard to keep up.

Remember they did it to UCF (who was the next best team in the conference) in the 1st quarter of their game on Jan 27. UConn came out of the blocks "smokin', and scored 29 in the first quarter, and never looked back. UConn won that one by 36. UCF was "gassed" the 2nd half only scoring 10/11 pts respectively the last two quarters. :confused:

It was a replay on the SEC Network Sunday. You could probably watch it on the ESPN Watch replay for this week.

Maybe a bit "short" but UConn will be an excellent rebounding team this year. ONO and Walker are both very good rebounders. Williams and Westbrook are both 6' and capable of being effective rebounders. Griffin and Makurat are in that 6' group. Makurat has rebounded against pros. I think she will help a lot.

I think we’re going to see a lot of Adebayo with her experience and rebounding toughness to start games. I believe Auriemma brought in a one year transfer with her skill set for a reason. If eligible, I’d rotate Westbrook with Dangerfield and Williams to keep all three fresh. Coming from the Tennessee circus, I think it’ll take Westbrook a while to learn some semblance of defensive principles.
 
Bueckers said she plans to take her official visit to Storrs in the fall, maybe even with some additional company.

“Hopefully I can get a couple other recruits to come with me, so I can try and convince them to come join me as well,” she said with a laugh.
