Outcoached

KO didn’t have a problem recruiting. He had a problem keeping guys in program. Jalen Adam’s, AG, Vance, etc were all highly ranked. Even recruited five star transfer Rodney Purvis.

Also there’s no telling what this team would do because we should be like that in the Big East… We’re probably the most talented team in the conference. These guys just have no idea how to play together offensively. Like no idea.
Come on when you have Kwintin Williams lining up for you then you know recruiting has hit a low point.

Sound game plan that almost worked out- wait for everyone on the other team to get injured. Unfortunately, Dixon’s ACL didn’t get the memo.

We can't blame Cole as he has to start the offense, look to score an be the man to get the big shot when we need it. He needs help. Time to give Hawkins more minutes. He has the talent but just has to get the confidence and allowed to play through his mistake. Polley is what he is at this time a streaky shooter who gets hot sometimes but gives next to nothing else and AJ has no offensive game unless it is putbacks, fast break points, an or a wide open 3.
Exactly

Poorly assembled team. Parts don't work well together. No shooters. No one who can get a bucket. No adjustments during game. Not good game plan or in game coaching.
Problem is Hurley still is relying on guys like Polley and Whaley to make an impact. He needs to bring in more of his players which he will do in the next few years. I still have faith we are going to be fine. This year could just be bump in the road as not having an Alpha 2/3 player on our team to get tough baskets was definitely an oversight by Hurley. I mean Hawkins is really just a jump shooter right now and AJ is what he is. A great athlete that is lacking in offensive talent. Martin is an engima to me. He has the talent to be one but just hasn't put it all together consistently to be that guy.

Hurley made a conscience choice to still be relying on Polley and Whaley in Year 4. That can't be blamed on Kevin Ollie even though that was the predictable intention of those that bring up this take.

I'm not blaming Ollie for that. I said it was on Hurley to rely on those players. He needs to bring in his guys now to get our talent up to a Villanova team.

Gillispie (2nd half) and Moore out and Nova still beat a ranked team. Sure its at home, but not many coaches can work that.

There are shooters. But whatever we run for them doesn't seem to get them open. And when they are open they hesitate. It's like they don't expect to be open.

Polley and Hawk would be the only qualified so called shooters based on their reputation. They don't qualify right now.

Watching this is occurs to me how tough a job Hurley has compared to Wright.

Depending who's on the floor our game plan needs to change. Even something as straight forward as Polley coming in for Jax. We have no interchange parts.

Every player had their game and thats about it. Only Cole, Martin and to a lesser extent Whaley are even a little bit versatile.
This is why I am more critical of Hurley's roster construction and offensive personel than his coaching. We are just so damn limited offensively in players that can attack and score/shoot. We play four frontcourt players most of the time because our backcourt is so undermanned. Just not a lot of answers out there. It's such a disadvantage. You just can't win consistently against decent teams under these circumstances. The guy that started in place of Moore for Nova made several offensive moves that nobody on our roster makes and he comes off the bench for Nova. I don't think Danny can gamble again solely on offseason development. Might be time to hit the portal this offseason.

.-.
We are the opposite of quick in terms of making a move to the basket or making the next pass. You can literally see the Nova players anticipating the next move and getting in position to counter.

Sometimes I thought they knew on D where the ball had to go than our guys did.

We recruited a small pt guard thinking he wouldn't need to play because we have Gaff? We need a bigger pt and someone who can penetrate. Take thier man of the dribble and finish at the 2 or 3.

Yeah that's the clear miss from Hurley, and he's started to allude to it. He just completely misjudged what we could expect from Gaffney this year and it's by far the biggest issue for this team now

This is the case with every decent team/coach. We haven’t won a quality games since before Christmas. Crunch time of the season and we aren’t making adjustments and we being outplayed by all these coaches. Hurley needs to at least get something different. The current system is clearly getting exposed

Shockingly, when the program loses to Wagner, northeastern, and wins by 3 against loyala Marymount young talent is not going to want to come play for us

Luckily Hurley was able to get us out of that rut, by recruiting an NBA lottery pick most coaches whiffed on.

Now we are back in the top 25 and people on this board want him gone because we’re not ready to beat elite programs like Villanova on the road

If we lose out and miss the tournament you guys have a point. Until then understand there’s gonna be bumps on the road back to being a perennial power

.-.
RJ cole isn't the issue. We don't have anyone else that can hit a jumpshot which is our problem. If we could have more than one shooter hit a jump shot it would open the lane for Sanogo and Cole to get baskets inside.

If you just watched Andre Jackson play and blame Cole you need glasses. Cole is the very least of this teams issues.

Nobody wants Hurley gone but we are looking at 4 seasons without a tournament win. We haven’t looked like a tournament team since Marquette. Five seasons without a tournament win at UConn is not okay

If we don’t get a tournament win I will agree with you

Losing at Villanova doesn’t mean we won’t get a tournament win

Not when you realize a good PG can elevate the play of the rest of the players on the floor. Cole is not a good PG. He's a SG masquerading as a PG.

Gaff has really been a mystery this year. I'm really pulling for the kid. He had his moments at times the previous two seasons. It was a mixed bag but there were glimpses. For whatever reason, it just hasn't materialized this year.

Durham and Enoch were highly rated guys who left and gave room for that. Same with Cance Jackson. Then injuries to guys like Terry and AG every year didn’t help. Bad luck was definitely a big part of the Ollie era. Couldn’t keep guys in the program or on the floor.

Remember the year where we had 8 guys on the roster that was healthy? Lol. Fun times.

Cole is the only one who can get a shot off the dribble. Just to small. Yea he doesn't have a good 3pt shot but he got points playing bad.

Jackson on the other hand needs to play less and practice more. Not ready for primetime. Plays fast but needs others to put the ball in the hole for him. Once the D gets back he's useless.

But you can’t blame him if he is our best PG available can you? There’s no one else to lead this team that’s on the staff.

Correct.

Why do we only have three guards? Two are unplayable.

Why are we redshirting Floyd? If he can play let’s play him.

Why didn’t we use all of our scholarships?

This could have been avoided
