GoLocalProv | Sports | NEW: President Dooley Kills Hiring of Pitino at URI
The University of Rhode Island Athletic Director Thorr Bjorn had come to a rough agreement in principle with Rick Pitino to succeed Dan Hurley as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the University late last week.

According to multiple sources, the deal would have paid the embattled Hall of Fame Coach Pitino $2 million a year. Pitino's salary at Rhode Island would have been less than Hurley's new contract at the University of Connecticut and less than a third of Pitino’s total package he had received at Louisville before his ouster.

But, when Bjorn took the offer to URI President David Dooley the hiring was shot down. According to multiple sources, Dooley balked due to Pitino’s ties to an FBI probe of the NCAA and other controversies.

I wonder if he knew it would get shot down and it was just fan service. I can't imagine you get that far along in the process and have no idea that your president won't allow it

Any program looking to hire Pitino looks desperate. Glad the president did his job and shot it down.

URI immediately denied it, going as far to release an official statement: University Denies False Story

On Monday, April 2, 2018, GoLocalProv posted a story claiming, "President Dooley kills hiring of Pitino at URI." This story is false. University President David M. Dooley and Athletic Director Thorr Bjorn have not spoken with Rick Pitino. Athletic Director Bjorn never presented an offer to President Dooley related to Rick Pitino.

that's a pretty strong denial that shoots down my theory lol

URI screwing around is starting to turn this into a circus. They even got fake news on this because this is taking so long. Being thorough is important but this should have been handled last week!

Literally the strongest denial in print I've ever seen. They asked for a retraction straight out. And they brought up journalistic integrity as a moral concept while denying the story in entirety.
yeah if it comes out that they did really offer the job to Pitino and then the President struck it down, and they came out with that denial, it's going to be a terrible look.

I think there's zero chance that Cox isn't named. Also, I can't imagine an AD in these times being dumb enough to actually interview and offer Pitino.

The line about journalist integrity is odd. That is something the media entity would say not the subject of a story.

I have no opinion if it’s true but the ram doth protest too much.

This is the most Rhode Island thing ever lol

yeah I just don't get how if Cox is the guy, then why did they just get around to interviewing others

The article quoted multiple sources on the Pitino offer and had figures. If it's not true on bringing it to President front, there were at least discussions somewhere. Interestingly it says AD AND President didn't speak to Pitino. You could argue one spoke but not both, or intermediaries.

I guess when you’ve had Jim Harrick and have enrolled Lamar Odom - you can still play holier than thou. Who knew?

If Cox is the choice, then what are they doing?

If Cox does come here it will be interesting to see what they do with the scholarships & URI recruits. You have to keep at least one open scholarship or take a fifth year guy this year in case there are any implications on scholarship reductions from the NCAA investigation. You don't want to go into 2019 with one open spot.

I think you have to gamble some guys will transfer next year. They will.

Heck, one might happen over the summer. Just recruit the kids and find spots for them later.

There’s no chance that’s true.

Zero.

First, no athletic director at a reputable school is going to take Pitino’s call.

Second, if one was crazy enough to take the call, the school president would be consulted long before there was a ‘rough agreement.’

Third, Pitino would have had every media lackey he knows tweeting about it by now.
