OT - Tad Matta out of tOSU

It's not close to the job at OSU but it's a good job in the BE and some guys prefer to stay put. I mean he has a great gig at a solid hoops school where he seems to be making inroads. Why take on the stress related to the P5 stuff, minus the more than likely 2-3M annual bump of course?
OSU really is a great job. I bet they wish this would have happened months ago, they would have had Archie Miller no doubt in my mind.

I was shocked when I heard on the radio that McDermott had turned down the job. Typically when a high profile job like that is offered it's because a handshake deal is already in place, no? Somebody had to have messed up on tOSU's end because this has been about as embarrassing as it can go in the college athletics world of jock swinging. Getting stood up publicly by the coach at Creighton is a rough look (and Creighton is a good job, don't me wrong...but I'm assuming this was their option B or C as it was). The Big East power brokers have to be happy though. Creighton isn't even one of the top jobs in that conference and one of the premier schools in the country couldn't lure him away.

They approached Mack and Holtmann 1st and they declined to be interviewed. I'm also shocked McDermott said no.

Ohio State never really had a shot at Sean Miller nor did they think they did. They may have had a shot if timing were better, but this season of all seasons they weren't prying Miller away. They knew that. Never thought otherwise.

They made a firm offer to Chris Mack and loose offers to Billy Donovan and Chris Holtmann. Donovan never really said no but the money kinda turned Ohio State off to the idea. Holtmann never turned down Ohio State, he just wanted more time than OSU wanted to give back on Tuesday. However, after going through McDermott and some other guys yesterday, OSU revived talks today with Holtmann. Things are getting pretty serious.

Basically it's looking like Holtmann could wind up being the guy for OSU.

They're now in a position where they will likely overpay for someone. Very odd transition, although my recollection is Matta turned the job down when he was hired only to recant later and take it irritating the Eggsavier fans. Karma?

This is why it was absolutely stupid to wait until 'recruiting ended'. Someone in here said that it was a good idea which is laugh out loud. They just handcuffed the sh|t out if themselves.

Iirc same person also said uconn should consider doing this. Bananaland stuff

Cooley already politely declined to be considered. BE comes out of this looking stronger. This is a top job.

Bold move by Cooley. He has a deep class coming in too. Smart move.

Considerate of him, but he's not getting that job.

True, neither are you nor I. Although I apparently jumped the gun (not surprising) His agent was contacted today, either way your version or mine he's staying. Good for one of us.

He's won all of one NCAA game in a decade and a half.

If his agent is getting calls - and this reeks of the 'turn down the job you're not getting' gambit - you and I are not far behind.

With the money that a school like Ohio State has (very few generate what they do), they always have a shot at anyone they want
The weather may have been a factor as well as the present OSU roster
It is a job that places you under a huge microscope so it is no wonder that someone like Cooley said no, the heat is nowhere as hot in Providence
I am surprised at Hoiberg - seems to me to be a really great fit

Yep, but truthfully if you look objectively you know what he has done at a school that literally was on deaths door. We don't have to agree on his value to other schools, to my school he is invaluable.

Crean to Butler would be awesome.

Personally I would take the job, not sure about you. I might be too old although I'm 55 and I look like Thad Matta's kid.

Jon Rothstein said on the FAN the other day that Motta was fired due to players transferring out, swinging and missing on his top targets, and failing to fill spot needs this year with post-grads. Hmmm.
