OT - Tad Matta out of tOSU

Wow. Seems pretty late in the off-season for such a major coaching move.

Wow. Why now? Shouldn't they have done this 2 months ago if they wanted to get rid of him?

Shows you how tenuous head coaching positions are.

Matta describing health issues, says he had to take pills and shots before games to coach. "It wears on you."

Gene Smith basically just said he made the decision now because Ohio State wasn’t recruiting well enough to get back on track.

This was Gene Smith's call, not Matta's. "Maybe it's time to make a leadership change ... and he agreed."

Matta: "I'm perfectly fine with (Smith's decision)."

As of end of season, Smith was on board with Matta coming back. After seeing how poorly recruiting was going, not anymore. "It was time."

(ignore time stamps)

Very interesting. His recruiting was great, but it hadn't been in a few years, and his back has been really bad for years as well.

People were initially reporting that he was out after the upcoming year which would have really scared me more concerning Gregg Marshall. With Matta out immediately I have a hard time seeing Marshall leaving arguably the best team he has ever had.

Told you guys. That's why I thought it was dumb for Archie to go to IU. There were rumblings of this for a few years.

Some players at other schools will be asking out of their commitments, though it may too late for those on campus already.

Out herein Columbus they are saying they already have someone lined up. You don't make a move unless you are prepared to move on... kind of like Edsall's hire so quickly after firing Captain Red Pants...

Pete Thamel is just throwing out the usual suspects right now but OSU is thinking big outside Sean Miller..
His preferences are
1. Brad Stevens (no chance)
2. Tony Bennett (good chance)
3. Jay Wright (possible chance)
4. Sean Miller (possible chance to better if wants to come home but can win with the recruits he is getting)
5. Billy Donovan (good chance)

Any chance this frees up Kaleb Wesson (top 100 center prospect)? I'm guessing it's unlikely since he's from Ohio.

See ya Gregg Marshall and Wichita state. You were nice for the month we had you.
Far from a foregone conclusion that Marshall will leave a preseason top 10 team returning every player, nevermind his huge salary.

1. Any change this point in the year not linked to misconduct is because of recruiting.
2. No KO on the list for a major opening? Don't we pine for those days.

Also, are we sure the Ohio State gig is as appealing as it's being made out to be? I assume they'll pay a lot and it's solid recruiting base, but it wouldn't be my first option if I were a coach at a strong mid-major. Nobody is ever going to care as much about OSU hoops as they do the spring football game.

Yeah, plus he is finally playing in a better conference. Would be kind of a crazy time to leave.

Ohio st is a big time athletic school that will pay a ton of money to its next coach. They're a huge step up in prestige for Marshall, you can't win at Wichita state forever.

Mark Few might disagree with you. Of couse Gonzaga isn't WSU, but has a similar profile, well except the fact that WSU has zero academic credibility.
