OT - Sam Darnold | The Boneyard

OT - Sam Darnold

Darnold struggled with the jets because they had a bad offensive line and no playmakers on offense. He also struggled with the Panthers. And the niners and Vikings let him go also. So it's not just the Jets who messed up.

Plus they had a top pick to draft Zach Wilson and reset the quarterback contract clock.

He wouldn't have developed to be this good if he stayed on the Jets.

Teams do not give QB's 6-7 years to develop and he was not good with the Jets (for whatever reason). I would say Carolina moreso and most definitely Minnesota were more wrong to not keep him.

Everyone has a different path to success some guys just develop later in their careers, you can learn from your failures too. Steve Young was a failed starter with Tampa then had a HOF career with SF and didn’t start there till he was 30. It’s a combination of being in the right situation and developing and taking advantage of that situation.

The real question is what the hell were the Vikings doing letting him go? He was 14-3 as their QB last season with 35 TD's 12 interceptions and threw for over 4,300 yards.

It's not like they had Steve Young waiting his turn, it's JJ McCarthy.

Sam Darnold stopped seeing ghosts and he grew a beard.

.-.
Darnold a huge key in San Fran. That guy from the Rams game would be the key to a W for the Seahawks he was sharp as hell. But if you’ve seen what Vrabel has done in the playoffs to make the QBs very uncomfortable, you’d be afraid the real Sam may come back. I think what the Pats do defensively is the key for them to have a shot.

It's kinda crazy that the Jets "gave up" (to be fair both were bad) on Darnold and Geno Smith who both went on to Pro Bowl, 30+TD, 4000+ yard quarterbacks elsewhere. Meanwhile the Jets are trotting 59 year old Tyrod Taylor and undrafted Brady Cook as the end of year starter. It will be the most Jets thing ever when Zach Wilson is making Pro Bowls for Miami.

It's really Zach Kuhr, the interim DC who calls the plays. The Chargers admitted they had no idea what was gong on. Completely confused on offense. Texans didn't say it but it sure looked the same. Denver had one long pass on a broken coverage play an otherwise never moved the ball at all.

I think the Patriots offense will show up in the nicer weather and will put up points. I also think Darnold has been around the block and will probably have a decent game. But nobody has run the ball on New England since Williams came back and once the offense becomes one dimensional, that's when these QBs have struggled.

Geno Smith missed a team meeting because he went to a movie and later that year had a teammate punch him in the face and break his jaw.

I am happy for Darnold and will be rooting for him in the Superbowl. It wasn’t going to happen in NY and he deserves to see success It’s MInnesota who decided McCarthy was better after seeing Darnold win 13 game for them, that has to be kicking themselves.

Who cares about Geno.

Oh yes, he was terrible for the Jets, and I remember that incident well. The Jets did nothing wrong in moving on from Wilson, Darnold, Geno, and Sanchez. All of them were bad to mediocre.

I'm not a Jets fan, but an avid WFAN listener, so I can receive the second-hand pain of being a fan. It has to be so infuriating to have been seeking a franchise quarterback for so long, swung and missed on the youngins' only to see them become very good elsewhere, and on the flip side, had the carrot dangled of the legends as well, only to watch them get very old before your eyes.

McCarthy was more economical, and in time may be better. I get it.

The success or Darnold and Geno is why I thought it was smart that the Jets gave Fields a shot. Sometimes the game just starts to slow down for these guys with natural talent who didn't succeed at first. I doubt it happens for Zach Wilson and Fields seems unlikely to get there.

So Jets fans, thoughts on using the 2nd 1st rounder on Ty Simpson or do you want to push for Willis or somebody else?

So I guess you no longer think Simpson is a top 5 pick?

Joe Fagnano?

Mark my words. The Jets are going to get Kyler Murray to add to a long, long list of below average, underperforming Jets QBs.

I am against them drafting any rookie. Even if they stand there with a clip board there is nothing they can learn from this coaching staff and they'll just have to re-acclimate to a new head coach and OC next year anyway.

There is simply no way possible the Jets can do anything positive in the 2026 season. The entire season is already in the trash can.

What you are describing is worst case scenario…which of course is what usually happens.

I suggested somewhere signing a Willis or Mariota…drafting a Nussmeier type in the second roundish. More importantly…signing Reich and a solid QB coach. To me that is the only way they make 2026 palatable. See what you have in 2026 and fix it in 2027 with your 3 first round picks. Thoughts?

They’re not signing Reich. If they were going to the would have already.

Also there’s a report out today that Glenn had Wink Martindale locked up and Woody said no. He said “I’m paying you 12m a year and you were a defensive coordinator, you call the plays” and Glenn had to reneg the offer to Martindale.

What I had heard is that AG had to make a choice…he couldn’t have two top dollar experienced coordinators, so he realized he needed to pick one. It makes more sense for him to invest in offense…so that’s why I think Reich is still play. He had a second interview today.

What’s rediculous…is why is AG such a high paid HC? He is making twice what Saleh made! How stupid is Woody?
