Perhaps it's due the rise of the internet, but hi-fi shops that sell good stuff are NO more.

don't have any Connecticut record store knowledge, but see the fixed quote if you want help in asking the question. Are you looking to buy a turntable? New? Used?

Take that s off of your vinyl, and you're set on that front.

I assume you're just starting this endeavor, so you'll be looking at entry level turntables; your best bet is probably seeing what is out there on ebay or craigslist and then reading reviews online to see if it meets your needs. If you want to buy new, go here, look for turntables that look good to you, and then read tons of reviews at any of the many sites/boards where audiophiles have spent way too much time poring over every audio-related product ever. I spent a lot of time reading through the phono forum at ecoustics.com.

All that said, I was looking to move up from my first turntable which I bought for ~$15 at a yard sale; if you're at that stage, ignore this advice and just buy the first cheap table that you find.

I started my collection in earnest in the not-so-distant-past. While it was tough to get started, I've found that the process of finding and playing records is worth it for me. (And since most everything new--that I listen to at least--is released on vinyl with a free digital download for a price equivalent to what a CD was 15 year ago, many of the major barriers to starting a vinyl collection are lower than they were in the past.)

Godspeed!

It's good if you can support your local used record place... if you still have one near you! Cutler's in New Haven is closing (if they haven't already). Last time I bought vinyl was at Replay Records in Hamden. Nothing can replace digging in crates and seeing something from another era that might be crap, might be great, you take it home and it's gold. But if you know a specific record you're looking for you can always look online, aside from the obvious - amazon, ebay, some of the surviving shops have online presences like amoeba.com, othermusic.com, turntablelab.com that sell vinyl (and equipment too. Oh and the latter two are in NYC if you want to spend a day shopping). And gemm.com is a good place to search for used stuff too.

The Stereo Shop in Hartford has been around forever. Not my favorite but water is scarce.

Liberty Square Collectibles in Hebron has lots of great vinyl with an emphasis on classic rock.

Vinyl is actually making a small comeback. Artists like Springsteen are major collectors.
A client of mine from Wisconsin was a major collector and one day working in NYC he insisted on stopping in a vinyl store that was famous to collectors. Don't remember the name but I believe it was in Chelsea. There is plenty of vinyl out there but I'm told finding a good turntable can be difficult.

Talk about being a day late with a post. Record Store Day was last week. But here's a list of CT stores that participated.

ADD: The page I set doesn't come up first when you click on the link. Just choose Connecticut from the drop down menu and click on GO and you should be all set.

Where is this? My parents still live in Hebron so I will have to stop by this place next time I am down there.
