Regarding John Carter, the SciFi channel has been showing a Princess of Mars movie that's a few years old. Traci Lords plays the titular (pun intended) character. The parts I saw of it didn't seem too impressive.

Regarding Prometheus, I'm glad that Ridley Scott is revisiting some of the elements of the original Alien. Even if it's not a direct prequel, it will be nice to have some explanation about the ship and the Space Jockey. As long as those explanations don't suck and they don't do anything silly, like having the power of love overcome the villain, it should be a decent movie.

Even by SciFi standards it was a bad movie (The one above not the recent one).

79% at Rotten Tomatoes based on 55 critics.

One of the better reviews...

I read a purported spoiler. If what I read is correct, it does give an explanation of that scene in the original movie. Whenever you write backstory, some will be satisfied with the approach, some won't. FWIW, I thought it was an interesting and didn't seem to contradict the existing mythology of the original films.

I don't know how people feel about the AVP series, but I wonder if they throw in some references, IMO I hope they don't, just curious to what other people think

Doubt that there are any AVP references, Scott and Cameron both viewed those movies as abominations.

I still think the first Predator was a classic.

I'll see it on HBO at some point. Here's where I hijack your thread.

I always read Box Office Mojo and it's hard not to notice that there have been two epic box office failures this year - John Carter and Battleship. Who knows how the math works out, but it seems that John Carter will lose $200M and Battleship will lose $150M.

Two movies, $350M lost - and they basically both had the same star, Tyler Kitsch(sp?). I've never even heard of him and he's somehow managed to get himself cast in two movies that have lost more money than some small countries have. Now that is impressive - does this guy ever get another job?

As for movies, I'm going to see Madagascar 3 on Friday. I have high expectations.

Thank god, he's not in this one. Scott has a great cast - Elba, Theron, Rapace, Fassbender, Pearce - and the promo on HBO shows tremendous production values. It's going to look great. The catch, I guess, is the story. If you don't mind it not making complete sense (or understanding it), should be great summer fun.

It just got a terrific review from Roger Ebert..

"Prometheus" is a magnificent science-fiction film, all the more intriguing because it raises questions about the origin of human life and doesn't have the answers. It's in the classic tradition of golden age sci-fi, echoing Scott's "Alien" (1979), but creating a world of its own. I'm a pushover for material like this; it's a seamless blend of story, special effects and pitch-perfect casting, filmed in sane, effective 3-D that doesn't distract.

Just came back from the movie.... Ebert's review. I went to see the Alien prequal and ended up watching 2001 a space odyssey, where David plays HAL.

You CAN'T divorce yourself from your genre, period. There were moments when I expected this movie to take off, it never did. If you are a true Aliens fan, this movie is not what you will be expecting.

I'm not a true Aliens fan. I'm not really any part of an Aliens fan.

So I went and saw Madagascar 3 with the second-grader.
