Prometheus is getting the nutbag treatment on some forums: Matrix and DaVinci Code meets Alien with a splasg of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Anyone seen it or going or got any good spoilers?

I'll see it on HBO at some point. Here's where I hijack your thread.

I always read Box Office Mojo and it's hard not to notice that there have been two epic box office failures this year - John Carter and Battleship. Who knows how the math works out, but it seems that John Carter will lose $200M and Battleship will lose $150M.

Two movies, $350M lost - and they basically both had the same star, Tyler Kitsch(sp?). I've never even heard of him and he's somehow managed to get himself cast in two movies that have lost more money than some small countries have. Now that is impressive - does this guy ever get another job?

As for movies, I'm going to see Madagascar 3 on Friday. I have high expectations.

It seems to be getting decent early reviews. If it's a prequel to Alien and is done by Ridley Scott, I am interested.

I might also wait for DVD on this one. Saw MIB 3 with the misses this past weekend, MEH! I didn't realize that Steven Spielberg was the exec producer, should have realized then. Basically someone realized that it wouldn't be too hard to break 300 million with this series with little effort, it had it's moments, but you can only do so many alien gags and denueralizer scenes before it gets tired.

You gotta give him a lot of credit for Snakes on a Plane though.

.

I too want a mid 6-figure job greenlighting stupid projects.
Battleship is hated in Hollywood by the likes of James Cameron. You know it's the "throw a lot of money at an impossibly dumb adaption of a board game using 3-D and pop stars" approach to film making. "They want to make the Battleship game into a film... This is pure desperation."

For every John Carter and Battleship a studio loses money on, they always seem to make it back with a movie like Avengers.

I am excited to see Prometheus though. People caution that it's not necessarily an Alien prequel, but it does take place in the same universe.

There's only three movies I care about seeing this summer, "The Avengers", "Prometheus" and "The Dark Knight Returns". I am hoping that one or two surprises emerge.

I am hearing that Prometheus is not a true prequel, but that could just be some sort of nuance that the marketeers are using to increase anticipation. Based on the one review I read, I don't possibly see how it couldn't be a prequel... but I guess this is the start of whole new storyline in the same universe.I have avoided watching all of the "viral" videos out on the internet because I want to know as little as possible about the movie.

I had low expectations for the Avengers. I was pleasantly surprised.

Very pleasant of you to wait 14 minutes from the original post to your reply. And after 1130pm to boot.

Just an observation. Now it's time to start stufffing the retrievers in the car and get the cabin ready for the summer.

I had a ticket for the midnight showing of Prometheus tonight... turns out I'm starting a new job tomorrow, and I probably shouldn't show up on 4 hours of sleep! haha

We saw it as well and its the first movie both my wife and I slept through parts in a long time. It's basically boring. (Maybe the deneurolizer worked on me - no wait it's forgetable, I haven't forgotten it yet!)

The Avengers hands down was the best super hero film I've seen on screen .. by a longshot... blew all 3 Transformers away... actually gonna see it again with my 11 year old little girl in 3D ( hopefully this weekend )... All these other sci fi / action / superhero films pale in comparison...

For all you back in the day comic book buffs, go see it... you won't be disappointed...

I could be wrong but I am pretty sure it was originally intended to be a prequel but as it developed it turned out not to be a true prequel the Ailen franchise.

I usually see about 1 or 2 movies a year at the theater, this will be the 1 movie I see this year.

Don't kill me here BUT if you suspend disbelief then Battleship wasn't that bad at all. It may have lost a ton of money but not too bad a film. RE: John Carter I am very excited to watch it ............................... on DVD via RedBox for $1.28 It comes out next week. I understand that its not a bad movie but was not marketed CORRECTLY and not enough of an explanation of the story. Its an epic book series so the story must be pretty good.

Taylor Kitsch is a somewhat well known TV actor, star of Friday Night Lights. He signed a big multi-movie development deal a few years ago and this has so far produced Battleship and John Carter. He has a new movie coming out very good, with Walker of Fast and Furious fame. Its about drug smuggling/ kidnapping and looks really good. If you think about it, some Studio is making a HUGE bet on this guy's career as he is STARRING in very BIG BUDGET movies and not some low rent indi flicks. Third time might be a charm for this guy.

Certain movies are made for the big screen (e.g. Avatar), and this seems like one of them. If it has decent (or so so) reviews I'll see the matinee (I'm a cheap ass) on the big one. If the reviews are bad or not so endorsing then its DVD for me. Typically I find the reviews from my peers more reliable for my taste than the experts.

I *really* want to see Prometheus.

Alien, Blade Runner...how bad could it be?

I've actually read a bunch of reviews and they range from "stunning visuals and an under-cooked story" to "stunning visuals and the plot's fine." Considering that I was in the latter camp for Avatar, I'm sure I'll be equally pleased with Prometheus.

So far the reviews are good. It's not ground breaking but solid.

It's looking like a prequel trilogy that doesn't intend to end up with Darth in uniform or Ripley in space. The green light on part II looks to be a week away

The plots been worked enough times to integrate many creation myth themes from around the world -- you either like that stuff or not. Then there's the landing on Christmas Day, the 200o year old head, the immaculate conception of an infertile women giving birth to .........and Boneyards.

The 5 Big Budget Films this year looking OK are Avengers, Prometheus, Spiderman, Batman, I'll give en early thunbs up to 'Cloud Atlas' coming in December. Based on a decent enough sci-fi book and the Wachowskis (Matrix, V for Vendetta and the lesbo robbery flick "Bound"). Actually, combine elements from those 3 films and I'm good to go. Lesbo Neos in Black Leather warping through time and rebirth to blow up Parliaments and kick fascist ass

I haven't even heard of "John Carter." Is that the name of the movie or a character in a movie?

Wait, what? Cloud Atlas? The David Mitchell novel??? No freaking way. I've been telling people how amazing that book is... I wouldn't call it a sci-fi book, either, anymore than you'd call the Blind Assassin a sci-fi book.

I'm actually currently reading another David Mitchell book right now because I was so impressed by Cloud Atlas. The guy is a genius. I don't see it really working as a movie, though.

Mea Culpa, I actually saw John Carter in the theater here in Germany. I go to one movie a movie on average and that was it.

I saw the movie before it had basically bombed, and I did not think it was that bad. Let me put it this way: it was as disappointing but still entertaining as Stargate.

Plus in John Carter the chic is really hot, and she wears a skimpy outfit the whole movie.

The title was terrible, nobody knows who John Carter is, the books are over 100 years old. They should have gone with the original title "Princess of Mars". That's pretty much self explanatory.

They shouldn't have spent so much money on 3d and special effects,

I'm glad that Ridley Scott is doing a re-boot or whatever you want to call it - if not of the Alien franchise, then a parallel world. It looks like this film will explore some of the more interesting (to me) sci-fi stories of Weyland corporation and space exploration... some of the alien sequels were good, but some were not as good.

Also really looking forward to him revisiting Blade Runner. I don't know if it's in the script development phase or if they are going to start production on it for sure... hopefully soon.

Avengers. 2 hours of flying around and smashing each other and everything else gets bit dull at the 60 minute mark. Trying to develop 5 superheroes at the same time doesn't leave much time for character or story because each one of them has to get a turn. It's aimed at under 20 and the 6 year olds in there loved it.
