OT: Notre Dame declines bowl bid

It's also another chance for some of those players playing in a meaningless game and get injured...players that likely have a future in the NFL.

Emotional response? Yes. But this is as much a player's decision as it is a university athletics program.
That's soft and this mentality is having more of a negative effect than a positive one on nfl careers and college programs. Look at Florida State the year they missed out on cfp and had a mass exodus of opt outs when they and now have back to back losing seasons while Georgia played their bowl game with some guys sitting but not in mass numbers and you see the position their in that's culture right there.

Let’s translate the letter to what they really mean:

“To our alumni and fans — thank you for giving us your hard earned money that you could be using for your family or charities you support or retiring earlier. We really appreciate being able to make real money before we’re eligible for the League. But just because we’re happily taking your money please don’t think that we owe you a 13th football game if it’s not the one we wanted to play in. We’d rather have the money and then play only if, when and where we want to. But thank you again. Suckers.

Luckily, the PR Dept. translated it for them.
Their version must’ve been written by ChatGFY 🤣

These kids are getting paid to do a job - play football

.-.
NCAA mucks the whole thing up with portal, NIL, coaching transfers and can’t figure out why it’s imploding.

Sooner or later the fans will just walk.

I’ll watch UCONN.😬😬

Probably not much else.
People keep saying this but the ratings are as strong as they ever been. You also have fan bases like Indiana and Texas Tech that are living the dream thanks to the recent changes.

Many top players would have opted out playing anyway. They are either putting their name in the portal or draft. It's really just become a JV football game.
As a fan - I have no interest in watching unless my relative is playing. It's CFP or bust for coaches and players

Legally they are not being paid to do a job. And I don't want to have to dig up this whole debate again. But this is factually incorrect.
a distinction without a difference. they play football. they receive money. pretty easy to draw a straight line betwixt the two. many receiving money and it's not because of their name image or likeness

The other schools that are turning down invites either are severely banged up and/or without a coach. What's Notre Dame's excuse? The fourth string WR put his name in the portal?

I hope Freeman jumps for an NFL job. Nothing would make me happier. Well, almost nothing.

Fans who think players should sit out bowl games are also a part of the problem , and you are entitled to your opinion. Pro sports fans don't really care but I'm telling you this is going to have an effect on the NFL as well.

You listen to Hurley's pressers that's certainly how he views his players. He has spoken numerous times about the changing pressures on these kids because now that they're being paid to show up they're expected to perform; the stakes were different when it was just a scholarship at stake but now that they're actually receiving checks...

The game ain't changed. It just got more fierce.

Well, bowl TV rating continue to be really good for the non-playoff bowls, so somebody is watching.

Oh so I see we're going there... See, when you draw that line, it kind of destroys college athletics. It leads to classifying athletes as employees. It allows them to collectively bargain. It will make most athletics programs close. That's why people don't draw that line.

they are independent contractors who get paid to do a job

So, just saw this ...

typical. They always take-take-take given their unique situation. I get it makes sense to maximize your position, but at some point I think it can cross over into being immoral. They were fiven a high profile home for a LONG time in the Big East for EVERY sport besides football, and that’s when it was a HUGE boost to the second biggest moneymaker in college-mens basketball. They took ALL of those benefits and “rewarded” UConn with ONE football game in exchange for ALL they gained from UConn. For me, it is ALWAYS “F ND.” Always.

Good thing we beat them in their home on senior day. Man, that felt good!

Irish got hosed, pure and simple. Arguably playing the best football now. The Committee saved face by putting the “U”Convicts in and having at least one ACC team in the 12. But putting Bama in over ND? NFW. Bama is not a CFP team.
Travesty.

If players are getting paid their should no opt outs in the contract. You opt out you don't get paid.
Exactly. I was wondering how this affects NIL payments

Better to only face the wrath of ND rather than pissing off the SEC and their commissioner. The SEC and B1G could blow up the whole college playoff if they wanted. Need to keep the SEC and B1G happy. Also, it might force ND to eventually join a conference.

ND beat up Syracuse and Stanford while Alabama was playing Auburn and Georgia. ND’s strength of schedule was 41st, Alabama’s was 4th

They literally do not meet the definition of an independent contractor lol...you cannot tell them where to be at what time to do a job.

Student athletes should be employees, but they are not. And the reason they are not is that once they become them, they break the entire economics of college athletics.

So do you want to continue to watch CFB? Then you best hope nothing changes where they are in this nebulous definition of student athlete who is "definitely not" an employee for legal purposes.
