OT: Notre Dame declines bowl bid

.-.
Couple extra weeks of practice for the younger players and a game to get under their belt. For graduates on the fringe of making the NFL, it's another chance to showcase their talent. And a chance for coaches to test strategies and see players in a lower stress environment. A lot of positives to play in a bowl game.

Let it all burn down, wanna believe there is some trickle down effect in UConn's favor with all the chaos cfb and this will have a trickle down effect on the NFL too, I say it already is look at the crap quality of play every week.

My husband, the ND fan, is disgusted. It’s not fair to the fans or to players, especially seniors with no pro prospects
Although it is disappointing that they didn't make the playoffs, if I were a ND FB player and the "adults" made the decision without input from them or coaches, that might be even more infuriating.

The NFL is going to have to step in to fix the mess of college football because it is going to have an effect on their product.

How long before bowl games are a thing of the past? The top programs do not care. Especially those that just missed out on the playoff.

I think you’ll definitely see a contraction of bowl games soon. Particularly if they don’t fix the portal window (which is leading to both player AND coaches leaving early).

Is that really a bad thing though? There are way too many bowl games these days. (Granted we are benefiting from it giving our lack of a conference).

I think Notre Dame's rejection is an emotional response to disappointing news. They will miss out on extra practices, a final game for the seniors and their families, and the possibility of another win.
It's also another chance for some of those players playing in a meaningless game and get injured...players that likely have a future in the NFL.

Emotional response? Yes. But this is as much a player's decision as it is a university athletics program.

Let’s translate the letter to what they really mean:

“To our alumni and fans — thank you for giving us your hard earned money that you could be using for your family or charities you support or retiring earlier. We really appreciate being able to make real money before we’re eligible for the League. But just because we’re happily taking your money please don’t think that we owe you a 13th football game if it’s not the one we wanted to play in. We’d rather have the money and then play only if, when and where we want to. But thank you again. Suckers.

Luckily, the PR Dept. translated it for them.

this is great. they went from thinking they were going to the CFP to learning their last game was on Nov 29. That's a shame. gotta really suck for seniors

I've often said that CFB should raise the win threshold for bowl eligibility. Yes, teams may schedule more games with weaker opponents, however going 6-6 doesn't really deserve the award of a bowl game. and perhaps if the wins were increased, the bowl committee could use cupcake schedules to send 7-5/8-4 teams to some random bowl. Oh wait, I'm talking about common sense and the NCAA here. Whether that's 7-5 or 8-4, who knows, however when there aren't enough teams with a 6-6 record to fill the bowl slots and the NCAA has to then rank the 5-7 teams, that misses the mark of the bowl being an award for good teams.

They're being prepped.for entry level work in the corporate world.

Iowa State and Kansas State also declined bowls. Coaches and players are increasingly often leaving their teams before the bowls. The bowls are becoming archaic at this point. Maybe they should enlarge the playoff and use late December for play-in games.
