Yes, it's still a long sequester before our young women take the floor, but tennis fans can take solace nowadays. One morning you'll awake and say, "Holy Cow, the US Open is here." The run-ups continue
in Cincinnati & available on ESPN2 today.
For Americans the highlight of the week was Tuesday's Sloane Stephens 3 set win over Maria.
Today she is up vs. veteran Jelena Jankovic.
Another good one should be ageless Tommy Hass vs. aging Roger Federer.
Although Venus lost in 3 yesterday to Vesnina, I am thankful she feels well enough to play and to
come through round one.

I've been a marshal at the Western and Southern open this week. We've had great weather, tremendous crowds, and some great tennis.

All the players except one have been wonderful to deal with. Sloane was a handful for us this week. Nadal, on the other hand, has been a delight and is really popular. Isner is tall enough to be a small forward. It'll be great for tennis if he can elevate his game and become the next great American as the crowd loves him.

While I was guarding the players lounge, Berdych and his girlfriend walked by. He realized he forgot something in the locker room and had his GF wait for him at my station. She is, by far, the most beautiful woman I've ever seen close up. The only way I can describe her was flawless. In addition, she was very nice.

If you ever have a chance to volunteer for something like this (as long as you're not parking cars or something like that), I'd highly recommend it. You get to rub elbows with some really interesting people. This tournament is unusual in that 95% of the people are volunteers. As a marshal, I was court side for the Federer/Nadal match yesterday and met and escorted many players to and from the courts this week.

Don't leave us hanging: how was Sloane a handful?

Did you have any interactions with Venus or Serena?

Sloan is very unpleasant, to deal with. She or her people don't communicate their intentions and then complain if accommodations aren't ready for them.
I've seen Venus practice, but haven't interacted with her. Serena is very businesslike. Some of the players are talkative with us, she's not. But she's not rude at all.
I'm currently guarding an interview room and the TV crew's bathroom. I'll try not to shoot anyone!

Thanks so much for the insight! This might give some context to her recent comments (including those about Serena).

I'm in Chicago and keep planning to go but something comes up every year.

I met a lot of Chicago people this week.

It really is a first class facility and tournament. It's often referred to as "the fifth major" and there were people from all over the world there this week. If you like tennis, you should make it a point to go once.

Never been a big volunteer fan

But.........How does it work ? how many hours do you have to work ? any say in where you work ? do you get a free pass for the tournament ? etc.

For this tourny, you have to work 5 shifts (8:30am-4:30pm) or (4:30pm to 12;30am) minimum over the week +. People work the same areas switching hourly so you need to get in early to get a schedule that works for your interests. For instance, the earliest people grab the on court spots for center court and the grandstand when the better players are playing. There are usually 2 hours during your shift that you are a floater and can usually watch tennis or eat. You just can't sit in the box seats on center court.
While my credentials got me anywhere in the facility, if I used them to enter the grounds, I was expected to report in and work. If I just wanted to watch tennis, I had to buy a ticket.
Many of the marshals take a week of vacation and come in from as far as Utah to volunteer.

The Williams-Azarenka final was quite a match. Both players seemed to be in the dirvers seat at different points of the match.

This unpleasantness is something you experienced personally while guarding the press bathroom or is this something you heard second, third, or maybe even fourth hand?

If Ms Stephens has a complaint, what is she supposed to do, not complain? Were the complains you witnessed/heard about valid? Reasonable? What accomodations were not ready for them? Would anyone else have the same expectation or are Ms Stephens expectations a bit overboard?

I feel like I'm providing testimony.

I was present for one incident, and was on site and monitoring the radios for the second.

What do you think happens when a player or her coach ignores multiple requests for simple info that is required to ensure the players safety? Namely, what time do you anticipate finishing practice and would you like a cart available to pick you up? And do you plan to sign autographs? Given that info, the marshals then provide security to ensure there are no issues. However, when the player chooses to refuse the normal safety measures that were set up (a cart off the secure end of the court) and, 20 minutes before her practice session was scheduled to end, walks unannounced through the facility carrying all her tennis gear, bad things can happen.

She got mobbed and had about 50 people aggressively surround her for autographs. There were 3 marshals, including me, that got there about 45 seconds later and restored order but she was understandably upset. But only at the marshals. If she or her coach had told us she was walking, those marshals would have been available to escort her as soon as she left the court. Either the player or her coach, we don't know who, complained to tournament officials after the fact. Then, 2 days later, there was a second incident similar in nature to the first when she decided to shop at the vendors area without letting anyone know right after practice. Many players walk the grounds, but not with their gear bags hanging off their coaches back and only after they are wearing casual clothes to allow them to be inconspicuous. Thankfully, due to the first indecent, we had plenty of people with her to prevent problems, but it tied up 4 marshals that were supposed to be available for other players.

As to your question about expectation levels.......all players with the exception of players like Nadal, Federer, and the Williams sisters among others who get extra security wherever they go on grounds all understand the routine and, for their own safety and comfort, abide by it. Nadal, usually if he is not playing that day, will walk back to the locker room and sign autographs for the fans BUT, his people always let us know about 15 minutes ahead of time so we can provide structure to the event. This is one of the reasons he is so adored by his fans. Sloan and her people were the only ones, of all the players and coaches, that chose to abuse the system and then acted as if it were someone else s fault.

Was she overboard, no. Hard to deal with and unreasonable, yes for this week.

Today's news has the Open seedings and odds. It's like the World Turned Upside Down
to see Roger at #7, though curious links exist between the two; i.e. Roger has 14-1 odds, while 4th ranked David Ferrer is seen as 1 chance in 66.
And you won't make much money betting on Serena, installed at 4-6.

Odds have no concrete link to probability of winning -- they're just the oddsmakers best guess as to where bettors are willing to put their money. And, successful or not, Federer is a sentimental favorite for many. (Like me. I really admire the grace and inventiveness he brings to his game.)

The Open match-ups have been released. Wearing my Venus-supporter cape, I report that she is unseeded and must beat Kristen Flipkens(#14) to advance.

You diehard fans, who will not let Venus go gently into the night (like me & Daddy C),
need to know that she is warming up right now for her 1st round match on ESPN2.

A great game for Venus. Obviously she's really on point right now. I'd love to see her make a deep run this year.
