The board is boring as duck* lately and there is nothing worthwhile to discuss basketball-wise, so...

I'm not a golfer, not really a golf fan and I don't understand the hows and whys of the sport -- with that in mind, how the hell did Watson hit that shot out of the woods and onto the green yesterday?

Near as I can tell, it went through a gap in the leaves of one particular tree and then put on its blinker and made a sharp turn towards the hole.

How does a guy do that to a ball by hitting it with a stick? And how does he know that it will do what he wants it to do? He might be a mad duck*ing genius.

I have played golf for about half my life and I have NO idea how he hit that shot. When they showed where Louie was after his drive compared to where Bubba was I personally thought it was over for Bubba. Bubba is probably one of the only guys on tour that would even attempt that shot, forget actually pull it off.

Professional golfers "shape" their shots pretty much every time they hit the ball, whether it's a little or a huge hook like Bubba hit.

It's the same concept as throwing a curveball or slider; if you put side-spin on the ball, it will curve in that direction. You have to hit the ball while kind of "sliding" the face of the club in the direction you want it to move.

Awesome, ballsy shot. Right up there with Phil's shot on 13 a few years ago.

It's gonna be interesting to see how Bubba capitalizes on the win. He has a crazy good game and obviously he isn't afraid to go for it- every time.

He's from a small town, Milton, about 15 miles northeast of Pensacola. Learned from mirroring his dad's swing at the driving range on public courses. He still doesn't have a swing coach and says he hasn't taken a lesson since he was ten. He went to the same high school as Heath Slocum and Boo Weekley. Pretty down to earth guy who recently bought the original General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard show to restore it. He has consistently spent a ton of time with the First Tee of Northwest Florida and a local tournament around here called the Divot Derby. He married his college sweet heart and they just finalized an adoption since she's unable to bear children. I think she played basketball at UGA.

On the other hand, he wears a $250K watch, drives around in some crazy sports cars and has a few documented instances of being a dickheaded celebrity.

I'm curious to see how his reputation plays out going forward. If he does it right, he's gonna make a shiittton of money on endorsements.

The difference is Bubba actually hits the shots others can only visualize or pull off on Tiger Woods 2012.

Well, yeah, to be able to hook it just the right amount and maintain your footing while standing on pine needles and not hitting any branches and oh yeah it's the 2nd hole of a sudden death playoff to with the Masters...

it's mind-boggling

You underestimated the price of the watch by about 50%.

That shot would have been amazing had it only gone straight, given he had to hit it under an overhanging tree. Forget about doing it in a sudden death playoff in a major.

Bubba has already committed to the Traveler's (GHO) so I was rooting for him. Bubba and Hunter Mahan are my two favorite golfers these days.

I like the guy just because he wears his emotions on his sleeve. Was good seeing someone genuinely get emotional once he won.

One should never forget that the difference between a touring pro and your average weekend hacker is no different than that between you an NBA star and pick up game player at the local Y. But that was a pretty amazing shot. Most of those guys can bend the ball around trees when they need to...but pulling it off under those conditions was pretty incredible.

Bubba is pobably the second biggest out there after Phil, just glad Mickelson didn't win.

I hit that shot (50-yard hook) all the time. Unfortunately, I'm generally aiming at the flag when it happens.
My thoughts exactly. I have no idea what I'm doing so the results are pretty predictable (woods, over shot, woods, undershot, hook, slice)!

I heard an interview with Brad Faxon (I think) and he was saying that because Bubba was below the ball (uphill lie) and hitting a wedge, hooking the ball was a lot more possible. He noted that clubs with high degree of loft are almost impossible to slice (although I can do this when I 'skull' it) and easier to hook. It'd be really hard to hook a 2-iron, but a wedge or 9 not so difficult. So although it was perfect execution at a insanely pressurized moment, it was a shot a pro could execute close to 50% of the time in practice.

Yes. Even after Bubba hit that tee shot, I was expecting Louis to drive it down the middle because he is money with his 3-wood. , I might have even gone with a low iron to make sure I hit it straight and put the pressure on Bubba. Even so, his second shot did him in, you gotta get on the green from there.

While it is certainly true that most golfers shape most of their shots, the difference with Bubba is that he simply refuses to not shape a shot. He could have a straight shot at a pin and he would still try and work the ball. I love watching him and the shot on the 10th in the 2nd playoff hole just shows why so many others love watching him too. That is just a crazy shot. He hit that with a 52 degree gap wedge...140 yards PLUS 40 yards left to right hook...off the pine needles..that is nuts.

Seriously, that watch cost half a million? Didn't see it close up , but it looked like one of the Swatches from the 90s(?) that teenage girls wore.
