This thread was about women players, in the NBA (specifically Griner....but somehow morphing into DT and her ability to match up in the NBA).

I thought I would cut to the chase....and discuss a 13 year journeyman NBA guard (read "average guard" in the NBA), matching up, head to head with a (the?) top WNBA guard....

And I would spot the age difference...and still see her being schooled, all day long

Bear JWS, you have to be kidding, it's just not possible for someone to be this dumb. My head hurts from reading this nonsense, there is no way Taurasi could play men's college ball and you think she could play for the Heat. Who is Quinn? If you're talking about Chris Quinn he plays overseas, another place where Taurasi would have zero chance of playing against the men. There are thousands of guys over there that are better than her too.

She couldn't play on a MAAC team, my buddy was a very good D3 player and he was coaching a high school team a couple of years removed from college and Taurasi came to his school to meet with the kids right after she graduated UConn. I asked him if he could beat Taurasi and he said yes, he isn't one to brag at all or use hyperbole. Saying scholarship men's players at MAAC schools suck just shows a total lack of knowledge on the subject, any guy playing D1 is really freaking good. Meanwhile our lady Huskies look awesome right now!

To add to this point, my brother played on the UCONN womens "guys" practice squad. Its a bunch of students who practice against the girls everyday. I frequently asked him how good they are comparable to us and he said that the men's student squad made up of mostly mediocre to above average high school basketball players would frequently beat them bad. He said there was a huge discrepancy from the likes of Maya Moore and the end of the bench. Saying that Maya could typically hang with her skill (although frequently guarded by a 5'10 white boy) but the biggest difference he said was obviously what everyone assumes the physicality and speed. Many of them were very skilled with the ball but were weak and could be pushed around easily...He said that his senior basketball team would have routinely beat them by 20 in a standard game. Now that team had a kid go to Notre Dame on a full scholarship but the average men HS team would be around their level of competition.............NBA'ers would run laps around average men's HS teams.........

News flash Chris Quinn is in the NBA. He was signed by Cleveland recently. He's slow, he can't defend, he has a so-so shot, he has no handle. I'll take my chances with Taursi when I need a bucket over some guy who can't dribble, shoot, defend or pass. All I need her to do is make an open shot. That's it. You guys are mistaken for me thinking she would be an all league player. I just need her to make an open shot, which many guys in the NBA cannot do. A specialist. That's it.

Whatever, you can think what you want. I think if there is a woman to make the NBA, Taursi has the best shot because she can shoot, handle and pass. I don't think Griner can make it. You guys are too fixated on her playing against starters & being a focal point. If you want Chris Quinn or Chris Duhon on your team, so be it.
 
bear u cant be serious bro. quinn looks 'slow, unathletic, no handle' because he plays in the fckn NBA. now imagine what taurasi would look like. speed not much worse than barea or duhon? thats some of the dumbest ive ever heard. barea played 25 mpg+ in a finals win against the fckin heat, pretty sure hes got some speed
 
I played personally with a good amount of the UConn women's stars from the early to mid 90's. Some of them were surprisingly good in pick up games. I went to a Division III school and played against plenty of D-III players... Big stars in women's D-I would top out as role players in men's D-III.

At some point the state needs a game between UConn women's alumni and men's D-III CSU alumni. You could raise a ton of money for a charity and break every CPTV ratings record.

Bear - if Taurasi could play in the NBA... then why doesn't she play international men's basketball? It pays about 1000x better than the WNBA.

So first off when does having a "NBA" career 38% 3PT shooting percentage constitute a so-so shot......That's with 6'8 SF 5 times faster, quicker and stronger than Bgriner jumping out at you to get a hand OVER your head after ball rotation and help D........Secondly do you even watch the NBA or just keep up with the transaction wire...."many NBA guys can't make an open shot?" ......really? really? when you wake up in the morning to take your morning , they wake up take 150 shots.....your on the way to work they are taking more shots, you eat lunch, they finish lunch and head back to taking another 200 open jumpers.....cuz thats what they do for a living.....The shots that you see or may be blasphemously speaking of are ......40 minutes into the game after they have been chasing Kobe around on defense, after the ball has been reversed 4 times (in 18 seconds because thats all the time they have on the shot clock by the time the ball gets to the front court) because there isn't the tightest of windows to get an off balance fadeaway off without the ball getting spiked into the 3rd row by a freak of an athlete....and MANY if not all of them shoot consistenly well from inside their ranges......CUZ if not THEY GET DROPPED because there is another MAN whether DLEAGUE or OVER SEAS that will make those shots, in whats known for being the most competitive professional sports job markets in the world........Your argument is a joke right??

My argument is that if there was a woman to make an NBA team it would be someone like Taursi, for the reasons I've mentioned numerous times already. It wouldn't be for defense, it wouldn't be for rebounding, it would be for like 5 minutes, it would be to make an open shot when surrounded by other good player. I've said numerous times, she would be a specialist 2nd-3rd stringer. Totally missing my point. It would be someone like Tauris who could make the team over somoene like Griner. You guys are getting too bend out of shape over it. It's hypothetical. I think her shooting is better than some other slow guys in the NBA. That's it. If you want to get all pissy about it, then so be it.
 
are you serious bear, look I support the Uconn women but this is ridiculous. Chris Duhon and Chris Quinn were both starters in college. Any player in the NBA whether you think they are a scrub or not would completly dominate any womens basketball player trust me. Are you serious about Barea that guy was awesome at Northeastern and completly dominated the NBA Dl eague, he had moments where he outplayed Lebron in the 2011 NBA Finals what do you think he would do against Taurasi.

And, still, you persist in defending the assertion that someone from among these "specialist 2nd-3rd stringer" players would potentially lose his job to Taurasi.

Wow.... Diana taurasi would struggle to bring the ball up the court vs Chris quinn. Sure her shooting is NBA level. But her defense, and overall athleticism are at the average high school level.

Bear if ur starting an NBA team u would sign Diana over Chris Quinn?
 
Taurasi could score points in an NBA game. Because she can shoot, and quite frankly, players get wide open shots by standing at the corners of the three point line. A wide open shot is a wide open shot.

But she's so outclassed athletically and defensively, it wouldn't work. And even if she could do it for one game, her body would break down over the course of a season.

I'm sorry, I think this thread is absurd but you pulled me in. Chris Duhon would absolutely murder Taurasi. I can't believe you're even saying this. He was a finalist for every major national player of the year award in college. This is a kid who averages about 25 minutes a game in the NBA over his career.

Chris Quinn was a 40% three point shooter in college. He only looks slow and unathletic compared to the NBA players he's playing against. And if you said Taurasi is quicker than JJ Barea I can only conclude that you're trolling. You have absolutely no perspective whatsoever when it comes to how good NBA players are. Taurasi is a wonderful woman's basketball player, one of the best ever, but she would LAUGH at what you're saying.

'a wide open shot is a wide open shot' isnt even really true though. dianas release time is slower than NBA players and her release point is a lot lower. what looks 'wide open' in the NBA would be an impossible shot for an average Joe to get off. she could hit a couple of threes standing in the corner playing with the Heat, but who cares, if thats all we are talking about theres a hundred Daniel Gibsons out there who could do it a lot better and not be absolute liabilities on defense

Hell I can shoot it as good as Diana Taurasi "if left wide open in the corner" and I didn't have to do anything else at 53 yrs old......wow that's saying something!! Anyway the truth is if any NBA player wanted to say "Diana, you're not getting a shot off because I am guarding you the whole game and not leaving to play help defense" then she wouldn't get a shot off.....really that simple!!

Come on now. There is NO WAY you shoot as well as Diana Taurasi if left wide open. No way possible. She is an elite player in the women's game who probably plays or practices at least 300 days a year. Most of us couldn't come close to beating her in a game of Horse. While I don't think she could ever play in the nba based on size, strength and athleticism, we can't completely dismiss that she is skilled in her own game.

BTW, I once saw Taurasi and 2 other UConn women's team players in a 3 on 3 before practice. They were playing Justin Evanovich and 2 other male students (practice players?). Taurasi looked OK, but certainly didnt look like a superstar. Yet a half hour later in practice against her female teammates she looked like a hall of famer.

I don't get NO WAY.........I shoot all summer with my son and I promise, standing still alone I can make 50-60% from their 3 pt range - promise......I'll go somewhere.........the problem is when she''s wide open in practice she may make 60-70% so she could take me!! LOL..................

She's not as good as Justin Evanovich either.....he could average 50 a game in a womens game!! Easy too!!

Shooting like that, Taurasi's probably 90%. We are talking about a person who used to regularly beat Ben Gordon in shooting competitions.

This is where people get ridiculous. Sure, she can't play with the men because she's smaller and slower. But her release is just as quick, if not quicker, than 99% of NBA players. Sure it's lower than their release..because she's smaller. But you haven't watched many NBA games if you don't think Taurasi could get open shots and get them off. (Sure, if Chris Paul decided he was going to face guard her the whole game, she's not getting a shot off. But the reality is no one does that in the NBA.)

Elite women's guards (and there is a huge drop off from elite to starter quality) aren't any different skill wise than the top men. They just can't compete because of physical limitations.

There are sports where women probably could compete at a pro level with men... You could make a defensible argument about golf , hockey goalie, or maybe even baseball... but basketball is just a different world. These are the most freakishly athletic humans on the planet.
