I once had my shot blocked by one of our women's players in a college pickup game - off the freakin' wall (never saw her coming - and of course heard about it for weeks). I'm thinking I probably wouldn't have done so hot against Raef LaFrentz and Greg Ostertag.
 
There's only one woman thus far who could even think of making a Division 3 mens' team and even then I'm talking "making a roster" and thats Diana.....the rest of them may be able to play against some decent boys HS teams a little............this is ridiculous. Leave them in their own world where they are relative to the abilities of their competition, and they're damn good basketball players. Put them in with even Division II college mens players and they get eaten up alive with no shot of playing...........

Damn the media is stupid and Cuban is playing them while laughing.......I hope Griner is kidding around with everyone because he....err.....I mean she doesn't seem that stupid!
 
One of my friends was at UConn when Diana was there. He could probably have played DIII, but he wouldn't have gotten any run. He played a pickup game with Diana, and he was matched-up with her. He said two things:
  1. He could score at will on her.
  2. She was unstoppable on offense.
Now, perhaps she wasn't trying hard on defense since it was a pickup game. But he said he could get whatever he wanted--but so could she, and she never missed a clean look.

Diana has the skills to play vs the men......the 'it" in her handle, ability and mentality....she could create, not so much for Griner,, Maya and others.......but again, Divy 3 at best and even then she would have been a marginal player at best.......different world.
 
There is just no way that Griner, a post player, would be able to do anything against NBA big men. No way.

Teammates would be embarrassed to shower with her, after they find out she has a bigger Wang then them.
 
The Griner is a guy jokes are the lowest of the low. It wasn't funny to make fun of an 18-year-old for years ago, and it's even less funny after 4 years of it.
 
Yeah, lazy and unfunny.

I co-sign everything Gurleyman has written here. The cream of the crop of the non-center women players (athletic wings like Taurasi, Moore, Swoopes) could acquit themselves in limited minutes on a DIII, DII or even low-level-DI team. Limited minutes, with their weaknesses covered. Coming off screens, playing zone, etc.

This isn't saying very much (basically that they could be a walk-on) so I don't understand the objections.
 
There is no girl who can play low level d1. Two of my buddies played at northern Illinois and I don't think Maya Moore could bring the ball up the court against them. Maybe d-3 but those guys are better than u realize.
 
I watched enough NBA games to realize Griner has zero chance of succeeding in the NBA. Yeah she could score a point here or there but the guy she is guarding would destroy her at the NBA level. I really like to see how she is planning to stop guys like Shawn Marion. In fact, I doubt she can stop any bench player in the NBA.

She is one of the best players in the women's game. I have no idea why people are comparing the two.

Not strong enough or skilled enough to play on the same court with NBA players(never mind elite NBA players). If the NBA guys go at her there is a real possibility she would not score at all. On defense she would get destroyed.

I honestly would be scared for her trying to play against NBA guys. She could get hurt.

Assinine, from start to finish.

Start with the position she would play....

In the women's game she is a dominant 5.

In the men's game she doesn't have the size to play 5 or the strength/bulk to play the 4.

And she doesn't have quickness or ball skills to play the 3.

We are often hyper critical of the college players with NBA dreams - who we feel don't have the size/skill set combination to take their great college level game to the NBA.

That would be a certainty, with Griner. As dominant as her college game is....it simply does not translate to an NBA career.

And nincimpoops, like those at ESPN, who start quacking about her NBA chances, as though there were any chance (realistic or otherwise) are just smoking crack.

Correct. At best DIII as some have pointed out.

Embarrassed is right. Actually, I feel sorry for her as I think she is not aware she is being taken for a ride. Cuban, as is typical of him, put his foot in his mouth and Griner is the unintended victim in all this. I hope people close to her can tell her the truth. On the other hand "any publicity is good publicity", maybe the advice she is getting. I see it as all bad.

As for the women's game analyst, Kara Lawson looked to me like she was trying to be PC and nice about it. Privately, she and other people in the WCBB know this is close to a joke, but she could hardly say such a thing in public.
 
In my opinion, the only women's player who could make the NBA is a highly skilled guard with NBA height. She's has to be able to shoot very well & handle the ball very well. I think Diana Taurasi is the only one who could fit the build. She's got the handle, shooting ability & savvy. Plus she's got the killer instinct. She plays like a guy. That said, she'd be a specialist in the NBA. Not saying she would be a star, but a role player. At 6'0" she could probably handle checking someone like John Lucas. Defensively, it would be a challenge for Dianna. But on offensive end, Dianna could make a lot of guys look bad...

We are not talking about DT3 playing horse or a 3 pt contest. We are talking about her playing BOTH ends the court.
Taurasi couldn't handle playing against NBA guards. She is not quick enough or athletic enough. Could she get a shot off-maybe if someone screened for her. But if the NBA guys dig in she would be locked down by the average NBA defender.

And defensively forget it. She isn't staying let alone stopping anyone. Again just not athletic enough or strong enough.

Never said she would be a defensive player in the NBA. She would be coming off the bench against 2nd & 3rd stringers, but her speed is not that much less than say a JJ Barea or Steve Blake or Chris Duhon or Chris Quinn. And you know what? She can pass it & shoot it better than any of those guys. And you forget, NBA defenses wouldn't be keying in on her. All she would need to do is nail the open jump shot & make some pass, which she can do 100x times better than these guys. If you think an NBA team is going to go to a Blake, Duhon or Quinn to win a game with Taursi guarding them, think again.
 
I don't believe she is on par with them in speed. Certainly not in lateral quickness.

Also, strength is important...she'd never get into the lane.

Strength is important if you're playing 30+ minutes, but if you're playing 5-10 minutes against 2nd or 3rd stringers with several other pretty good NBA players on your team, it's not as important. Would you rather Duhon or Quinn or Blake to hit that open shot instead Taursi? John Paxson & Steve Kerr played many years in the NBA as slow, short, unathletic, defensive liability guards in the NBA, but they could still nail it if left open. That's all I'm saying.
 
I think you are severely underplaying both the talent levels of those who you named as well as the rigors of even playing 5-10 minutes against 2nd and 3rd stringers.

These guys would eat her lunch. She couldn't stop my 6'0" friend who didn't even play college ball back in 2004...

No way DT3 could consistantly score on an "Average " NBA guard. She would get schooled by an NBA guard. And she couldn't guard women in college let alone an NBA guy.

Go down to Rucker park in NYC and just watch.........those guys would shut her down let alone amn NBA guy.

They are not playing zone. They are playing man to man. Who is she beating off the dribble. Like i saod could she shake lose for a jumper-maybe. But these guys are not going to let DT3 stand around and shoot jumpers.

Ok, put her on the Heat... 20 second left in the game. LeBron & Wade are on the court... They are double teamed... would you rather pass to Duhon or Quinn or Taursi for an open jump shot? Hell, I'd take KML over those guys for an open shot. That is my point, a specialist. Duhon or Quinn offer nothing as NBA players, especially Duhon. He shouldn't be in the league. This is the way a female makes a team because she has to do something exceptionally well. IF you want Duhon & Quinn, you can have them...
