Just fantastic. The tortured artist effect done better than "The Doors" and "Lady sings the Blues" other similar films.

(below) The Original Cut. Accept no bloated substitutes.

The horror, the horror!

  • We train young men to drop fire on people. But their commanders won't allow them to write "" on their airplanes because it's obscene!

It won't let me add another image, but "Moonstruck " would be it. I could go on but I won't. Tonight I'll look at the movie shelf and realize I left out another three.

Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!

Shawshank (already mentioned) and Silence of the Lambs were (at least in my opinion) the two best movies of the 90's.

Requiem and Defiance were both terribly disturbing. Interesting pair of favorites.

The two most profoundly philosophical movies I've seen.

Best love story - Lost in Translation (but strictly for middle aged or older men).

Honorable mention: 12 monkeys, V, breakfast club, razor's edge, snatch.

I'll have to think about my second choice but #1 is easy:
MPW-21363

I first saw it in Politics, propaganda and cinema at UConn. It wins hands down, at least for me.
So many other good choices, included many already listed. I'll give A Few Good Men the runner up prize and go with:

One of the things that's tough is how you rate movies from the developmental period - say anything prior to 1970. Maybe. I'm no film expect.

I see old flicks, and they're enjoyable, but they're often rather silly. As in, nobody ever spoke or behaved that way, not even at the time the movies were made.

For example, I liked "Gone with the Wind," but it's tough to ignore the fact that the manner of speaking is completely contrived, and the complexity of the language among ordinary folks beyond anything that ordinary people ever spoke. It's like reading Dickens - enjoyable, but silly to imagine that it reflects reality even at a distance.

Also, how much angles and focus and stuff like that matters is a personal thing.

I'm much more of a story guy - tell me a great story. Other folks appreciate use of shadow, lighting, and so on.

And still other folks thought the Fast and the Furious was a good movie.

As far as a "story" movie goes, this one was great. Jack's best performance IMHO. Bacon is the answer!
