Best guess - compression.

Are you in an area where you can pick up the ABC signal on a regular antenna and bypass the cable box? You'll be amazed at how good uncompressed over the air HD looks.

What's bad quality? I see their numbers and true colors. Granted I can't see shoe laces, ball stripes and individual fingers in half court view but closer views appear fine. Got 39 and 50 inch TVs..

Oh I see, I was watching the NYC station. I rarely watch sports on WTNH.

Its almost always the local station. Where I am in Jacksonville, I have Directv and for the local CBS affiliate, the football picture is terrible (Jaguars notwithstanding), blurry in transitions, etc. When you switch to the CBS channels in the NFL package they are crystal clear. Might have to try the OTA to see if that cures it.

I have WTNH and WABC available OTA - it's night and day. This is not a usual "OTA vs cable/satellite feed" issue - WTNH flat out sucks, and has for years.

I have Frontier/U-Verse. I always noticed that the New York ABC and even CBS have a better quality picture and sound compared to the Connecticut stations.

amazon basics works in a Manhattan apartment with no view of the south (where signals originate). They have cheaper versions.

The NY stations are blocked in hartford though?
