I'm way behind on viewing Oscar bait films. I've seen The Big Sick and Logan, and some of the films that got editing or sound or visual effects nominations. Nothing from the Best Picture, Director, and Lead and Supporting Actor and Actress categories.

I don't go to the movies enough to have an opinion, but in retroactively watching a lot of Oscar bait movies, I think it has turned into a popularity contest combined with a lifetime achievement award.

The only movies I saw that really got any nominations were Dunkirk, Logan and Get Out.

Honestly, I liked all three, but none of them really seemed all that great to me.

As among the major nominations, I've seen Lady Bird, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Post and Molly's Game.

I think the actors/actresses and supporting actors/actresses nominated from those movies are all deserving, except I don't agree with Meryl Streep from The Post or Octavia Spencer from The Shape of Water; and I think Woody Harrelson is more deserving than Sam Rockwell as between those two from the same movie.

I agree with @Waquoit about his criticism of Three Billboards overall, and likewise I don't see the redemption in Sam Rockwell's character or anything remotely compassionate about the film except Harrelson's character and one fleeting moment that McDormand has with him.

I don't think The Post is worthy of Best Picture. Good watch but nothing earth shattering about it imo. I've said my piece about Three Billboards; and I think The Shape of Water, albeit a good, interesting watch with some great individual performances, is too silly/too much in spots.

I liked Lady Bird the best of the bunch overall. I suspect that I, Tonya and/or Darkest Hour might change that once I see them.

ETA: I forgot that The Big Sick was also nominated. Saw that, too, and liked it. Funny, cute, interesting dram-com; nothing really Oscar-worthy about it though imo.
