Assuming that this will essentially serve as our GDT...let's get it!

Should be an interesting (and inexperienced) lineup without Yahn, or Toppa (who did not make the trip). Go Huskies.

Toppa was one of our top hitters last year. Anyone know what happened?

Nice, three freshman. Hopefully they will put up some runs and Cate does his thing.

The offense seemed to take a very patient approach at the plate. This would be a solid strategy coupled with small ball. With the lack of power in this lineup getting to the bullpen early could be key.

I like the patient approach, but we are facing a pitcher with a career 5.00+ ERA. I cannot imagine he is much better than what they have in their pen tbh.

Going into the top of the 3rd, still 1-0. We have dominated but have a flimsy one run lead to show for it...keep playing this way and we should be fine.

2-0 UConn in the 4th, Cate has 9 strikeouts already. Feldman had a double in the third and Moriarity continues to make solid contact.

Defense has been a real problem today, despite the lack of hard contact by the Riverhawks. Runner on 2nd, 1 out in the top of the 6th.

4-0 UConn top of the 7th. 6th inning, a Prato hit drives in Moriarty for a run. Sounds like the freshmen Moriarty and Prato have done fine in their first game.

Two strikeouts for Cate in the 7th. 13 strikeouts for Cate, new career high.

Despite a neutral field, UConn will be the home team and bat last in all four games this weekend, according to Chris Jones on WHUS.

Tim Cate comes out to pitch the 8th, gets the first out. Cate is then relieved by PJ Poulin who pinch ran for Gnesda in the bottom of the 7th.

Ryan Radue in the game! What a moment with all he's been through. So happy for him

.-.
Poulin gets one out, walks a batter. Ryan Radue comes in to pitch, and gives up an RBI double. Still, good to see Radue in there after all he has been through.

Another hit off Radue scores a run, then Radue gets the strikeout to end the inning. 4-2 UConn up going into the bottom of the 8th.

Bottom of the 8th. Prato singles and steals second. A Zac Susi triple drives in Prato to make it 5-2 UConn. Nice power surge today for Susi.

John Russell in to pitch the 9th. Gives up a homer and hits a batter, but gets three outs to end the game. UConn wins 5-3.

Some interesting stuff to consider here. Granted this is one game against low-major competition, but:

  • Prato and Moriarty look like they will be really nice players for us over the course of their careers. I think they will remain in supporting roles this and next year, but they can definitely succeed at this level.
  • If Susi keeps flashing this kind of power, watch out.
  • Sundberg's graduation and Toppa's injury shows how much we have to work on defense in the outfield. In the early going, I would not be opposed to seeing Loeffler and/or Nucerino (whom I believe were HS teammates, coincidentally) get a couple of late-inning subs to see how they field the corners. Or maybe there's a Feldman-->Dan Hurley, Gnesda --> 1B, Winkel -->CF, Stefanski --> RF switch coming up soon.
  • For another year, the bullpen will give us all agita. I can't root harder for Radue but I don't think he can be trusted in high-leverage situations. Poulin and Russell are solid but I would've liked to have seen them be a little sharper today. I'll be interested to see if Dandeneau can build on a solid freshman year, and it was intriguing hearing Jacob Wallace get talked up by the coaches.
  • Where he ends up drafted next year is anyone's guess at this point, but Tim Cate has a great chance of putting up better numbers for us than both Cross and Kay did.
