Opening Weekend vs. UMass Lowell in Port St. Lucie

5-1 after a nice trick play on the bases. Looks like we might actually be competent on the basepaths this year...knock on wood.

Going to the 6th inning.

Penders pulls out his pet trick play. Susi attempts a steal of second, gets hung up, and Prato comes in to score before Susi is tagged out. End of 5th inning, 5-1 UConn.

Another solo home run, 5-2, 2 outs and one on. Defense has looked a little shaky and Montgomerie is getting hit hard.

5-2, Montgomerie getting burned on first pitch fastballs. Lowell thrratening for more.

This could be a huge development. The ability to work the basepaths has little bearing on the level of competition. The ability to manufacture runs without nessecarily requiring stringing hits together will be big. This could play well against teams like ECU and Houston. For those who may not have followed baseball last year, there were quite a few games against good pitching staffs where runs were hard to come by even with the offense we had last year.

Montgomerie somehow gets out of the 6th with only one run scoring on the homer, but he was in a lot of trouble in that inning. Montgomerie now has 9 strikeouts. Poulin and Rajkowski were warming up late in that inning. 5-2 UConn going to bottom of the 6th. Montgomerie may have pitched his last inning today.

Bottom of the 6th, runners on 1st and 2nd, and UMass Lowell throws away a sac bunt attempt by Moriarty. One run scores. 6-2 UConn with inning still going.

Another wild pitch makes the score 7-2 UConn going into the 7th. We had tough BABIP luck with some very hard hit ground balls, but it did not matter in the end because of their mistakes.

Pleased with the offense so far. Bullpen needs to be less scary than yesterday :)

Rajkowski gets two out, then hits and walks a batter. Poulin coming in to pitch.

I deleted this earlier. It applies much better now:

Bullpen = Head bang

Bullpen imploding again. The only 2 outs this inning came on 2-0 counts, too, so this could be much worse.

Poulin allows a couple of runners on with a run scoring before ending the inning with a strikeout. 7-3 UConn, with Huskies coming up to hit in bottom of the 7th.

The freshman class has been very solid so far. I'm excited to see how they handle better competition.

Defensive moves for the top of the 9th. Krueger goes to left field, Winkel to 1B, Gnesda out. Dandeneau stays in to pitch.

Dandeneau could be one of the most important players on this team if he keeps pitching like this. I never understood his 4.5 ERA last year considering his stuff and 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

7-3 win! We were not at our best but baserunning turned out to be a major positive today and the freshman continue to step up.

Two excellent innings for CJ Dandeneau. UConn wins first game 7-3. Looking forward to Mason Feole starting the second game.

2nd inning, Gnesda gets hit by a pitch, comes around to score on a Moriarty single. 1-0 UConn going into top of the 3rd. By the way, UConn batters have been taking a lot of hit by pitches.

Bottom 3rd, Prato got on, steals 2nd, and comes home on a two run homer by Feldstein. 3-0 UConn after 3 innings. By the way, Prato has 6 stolen bases so far in this series.

Feole gets into some trouble in the 6th, gets out of it after allowing one run. 4-1 UConn going into the bottom of the 6th. I'm thinking we may see the bullpen in the 7th. Still, a very nice debut for the freshman pitcher. 3 hits, 3 walks, 7 strikeouts so far.

Freshman Jacob Wallace in to pitch the top of the 7th for UConn. Throws an easy 1-2-3 inning.
