Opening Week (Non-UConn) Game Thread

Georgia Tech lost to Miami (OH) as well.
 
Hofstra blew it. UH defense has suffocated them down the stretch and they hit some 3s to force OT, now have a 6 point lead with 2m left.
 
Missouri Valley had a rough night. Likely to go 4-6 tonight.

Virginia is toast against Navy. Bad night for the ACC.
 
Probability that Calipari will blame the inexperience of his roster for tonight's loss? Meanwhile the players that starred for Duke were freshmen playing in their first college game. Didn't UConn recruit Keels?

The icing on the cake this season would be UConn being the team that ended K's career with a big fat tourney L.

Preferably in the NC. But I'll settle for FF or EE.

Dixon knew his style didn't mesh with ACC ball, but the Kevin Stallings hire was horrible. Old boys network stuff. They didn't have to lose their NYC pipeline, but Stallings' staff choices ensured that. And now it seems Capel has had a hard time with keeping any semblance of unity with the teams he had - at least one of which did have tourney-level talent.

Losing the NYC pipeline was HUGE. When Pitt left the Big East, they were no longer going to regularly play in the Big Apple, and then they became just another team recruiting New York City, like 50+ other major conference programs. There is basically no talent out of western PA, and Pitt has to slug it out with the Big 10 for what little talent there is. Ohio does produce some players, but there are a lot of teams working that ground. Good luck getting a kid to come from Virginia or North Carolina to Pittsburgh. When there are so many good ACC and SEC programs plus Maryland, Georgetown and Villanova that are closer and have better programs.

Dixon saw this as soon as the move happened, and bolted soon after.

Until Sacred Heart beat La Salle in OT 86-81.

Good game for their CT talent:
  • Amity High's Tyler Thomas led the Pioneers w/ 24 points, 11 boards and 5 assists.
  • East Catholic alum and Holy Cross transfer Joey Reilly scored 13 off the bench.
  • Trinity Catholic alum Cantavio Dutreil w/ 7 boards in just 14 minutes.

They got Providence next. That should be interesting.
 
Houston might be actually bad this year
 
Feel like Gonzaga is not going to be nearly as good as people think. If you think we have issues shooting from outside, look at their team. They have maybe 1 guy who can shoot the 3 at better than 35%. Huge step back for them compared to last year with Suggs, Kispert, and Ayayi.

But their conference is high school level so they're still going to get a 3 seed at the worst.

Meh. They won't play in the Final Four, but they didn't look that bad. Hofstra played well.

Pitt was a steaming pile last night. So was Virginia.

yeah, sure. young chet prolly gets half a dozen/ten free throws just by standing on the court. and then there's everything else that he can do at an nba level as a frosh. add a steady diet of micky d's to his food routine this year, and .....
zags lose some of their guard centered routines of years past, but they pick up chet. nice problems.

yeppers, just a couple hunnid of big macs away from filling out nicely. some think just bumping his skinny will work, but it won't. he's wirey and cagey, and while someone is bumpin/frontin him, he'll just rise up and dunk on their head, or just shoot a j from like 15 feet up in the air.

Coppin state is down 1 to DePaul close to the end of the first half. DePaul stinks but it is very clear Coppin state is light years better than CCSU so at least a better test Saturday.

Light years better than CCSU?? Coppin State is AT BEST evenly bad. They just lost to Loyola Chicago by 58. Current Kenpoms: Coppin: 351, CCSU: 348.

Then DePaul really is god awful. Also, kenpom means nothing this early in the year. But yes, I didn’t see that they lost by 58 lol

Yeah that WCC this year really has a bunch of HS type teams. I mean if UConn could only get an easy road game @ BYU or @USF. Every team in the country needs a cupcake game like that!
