Nice to see some baseball in April again!

My Yanks lost a tough one in extras, Miggy hit a homer in the snow, Tex/KC scores 10 runs combined in the first inning.

Anyone else watching hardball today?

I forgot about the runner starting on second in extra innings thing, which I hated, until it helped the Phillies win.

Mike Stanton in post-season form already!!! Yanks fans gotta feel good about that.

Yup watched a few games on the Ola app. Saw Dodgers load the bases against comeback player if the year Daniel Bard. Saw winning slide from the Brewers into Home plate. The Braves dropped opening day in Extras after being thrown out at plate On a wind aided throw at least that what Albies was describing how they nailed him at home.
Oh yeah RedSox got rained out still 162 games to be played starting tomorrow.

The weird new MLB rules are something that I did not expect to grow on me, but they have. Today's Yankees result notwithstanding.

Seriously though, bring on the runner on second in extras, NL Dan Hurley, 7 inning doubleheaders. Tradition be damned it's fun baseball

It’s got a real “ghost runner on second neighborhood kickball game” vibe.

I am not a fan of the runner on second rule. Hated it last year but understood it’s necessity. This year it has no place in the game and I hate it even more now because it cost the Yankees a shot at winning yesterday.

7 inning double headers are fine. They won’t happen frequently so it’s okay I guess...

NL Dan Hurley should have happened a decade ago, and despite a larger roster this year, THAT is the one holdover rule from last year they ditched? Manferd is worse than Roger Goodell.

Love opening day.

Made you realize why the Yanks will never get to a World Series again under Brian Cashman. Same ol pitiful lineup designed for the long ball and not for getting hits with RISP. Saw all you need to see in game 1 of 2021 to know where they're headed.
But good to see baseball fans back!

My team didn't play because of COVID, won't play today, and is most likely having Saturday and Sunday cancelled as well.

NL Dan Hurley will come for good next year. Manfred held it over the players heads knowing both sides want it, just hoping the players would counteroffer and show their hand early for the CBA negotiations next year

Undefeated Pittsburgh Pirates.
@Pgh2Storrs and @storrsroars, looking to take a summer road trip out to Pittsburgh. Never been and always wanted to visit. Best time of the summer to visit and any local tips (neighborhoods to visit or stay in (AirBnb), food, whatever recommendations would be awesome!)

Pirates game definitely on tap and we're excited to see the art and architecture of the area (Mrs. Hey Adrien is an art teacher/mixed-media artist with a studio in town).

Back to opening day, very fortunate to have been done with classes on Thursday at 1 PM. Got to watch the first 90 minutes of the Yankees game on my projection screen at school while grading. Overall, a well played game, but would have loved the win.

GREAT to see fans in the stands.

Watched the Tiger's game. Might hit his homer in a heavy snow flury, couldn't see the ball so he slid into second base. Really made me laugh. Baseball means warm weather.

Man, a whole lot depends on how we're doing vs Covid. Too early to really say what's going to be open and thriving. I'm having my brother put off visiting until late summer or fall as I want to make sure we can go to places I really want to go.

That said, pretty much every visitor I've had wants to go up the Incline to Mt. Washington for the views, which are pretty great. Most also want to visit the original Primanti's, which unless you're really into Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, I think you could easily avoid, although going to The Strip area can be enjoyable (a lot of old school ethnic stores mixed with old and new restaurants). A better version of Primanti's type sandwiches is found at FatHead's in the SouthSide, which is pretty much one 17-block long stretch of indie bars and restaurants on E. Carson St. ranging from excellent to divey, ending at corporate shopping area with a Cheesecake Factory and Hofbrauhaus. You'll want to visit, but you won't want to stay in that area.

Staying downtown has merit. The T is free to all downtown and Northside stops, including PNC Park and Rivers Casino. If things are back to relative normalcy, plenty of good restaurants to be had. If not, could be a bit of a ghost town, although a walk around Point State Park can be enjoyable.

Shadyside is the closest thing we have to an upscale walking area, kinda Westport-ish mix of national brand shops (e.g. Williams-Sonoma types) with indie restaurants & bars mixed in. Relatively easy walk to East Liberty bar/restaurant scene, which was thriving pre-Covid. I'm guessing you should be able to find a number of AirBnbs there. Lawrenceville is another hopping area, oft-labeled as the "new Williamsburg (Brooklyn)". One of my favorite places, a Thai restaurant called Pusadee's Garden (and you want to eat in the garden) is there, along with a ton of interesting restaurants and microbreweries that I hope are open for sit-down service when you visit.

The big museums are generally nothing special compared to other cities, although you'll want to pay attention to whatever seasonal exhibits are happening. Exception is the Warhol, which is worth a visit for its uniqueness and weirdness. The Mattress Factory in Northside is also worth considering if you like non-traditional art (and while there, stop by Randyland). There are a handful of performance theatres that usually have interesting plays going on if that's a thing for you. Depending when you come there are also numerous street festivals happening in July/August/Sept.

I'm also partial to a couple of places in Braddock (home of John Fetterman, whom you may have heard of). Superior Motors is the best restaurant in town, IMHO, and Brew Gentlemen the best microbrewery in these parts. Bit of a rough area, so you won't be walking around, but it's starting to attract some urban pioneering types and those two places would be popular in cities much larger.

Other than that, some nice trails for walking/biking alongside the rivers. You can kayak the Allegheny. Visit the Pitt campus and check out the international rooms at the Catherdral of Learning (my late mother was thrilled they had a Lithuanian room!). Some good excursions outside the city as well (e.g. Fallingwater, Meadowcroft, etc.)

Would be happy to add more if you've got any specific interests in art/music/food/activities. Drop me a DM.

mets fan? i have been looking forward to opening day since the maryland game... so unbelievably bummed about these cancelations.

at least we got lindor locked up!

Yeah I can live with waiting until Monday (potentially) if it means we get Lindor for the next 11 seasons.

@storrsroars did a great job, but I’ll try to add my two cents.

As far as timing, you’ll probably want to play it by ear with when things start really opening back up. Ordinarily around the 4th is a great time, as well as Arts Fest and the Rib Fest, but no clue what is planned for any events at the moment.

If you’re doing a hotel, then I certainly would say to stay downtown but if you can find a nice Air BnB, I’d say Mt Washington, South Side, Strip District, or Shadyside would be a good area. It’s an extremely walkable city depending on where you are, but The T is free through downtown and Uber/Lyft can get you anywhere you want to go.

Definitely a Pirates game, if you’re in town for a home stand. I have no clue what the game day environment will look like moving forward, but ordinarily the Clemente Bridge and Federal St are closed for weekend games and they have food trucks and such in addition to the restaurants/bars on the street. There are a ton of options for food/drink around the stadium or you can eat downtown and walk across the bridge, so it’s really all dependent on what you’re in the mood for.

As was recommended, Fatheads is probably my favorite spot in town. There’s also a few great spots in Mt Washington in Bigham Tavern or Redbeards, if you venture up there. I hate Pitt, but it’s a cool campus and if you’re into architecture, the Cathedral of Learning is a really interesting place. Also the remnants of Forbes Field are pretty cool but, as a Yankees fan, you might not enjoy the connections to the Maz HR as much as others do. If you find yourself in Oakland, Union Grill on Craig St is amazing.

Truly it’s a great city to explore so, if you do decide to make the journey, don’t hesitate to shoot me a DM if you have any questions.

Yankees need to clean house. They aren’t winning hitting .185 and banking on 50HR from 4 players.

Baseball has got to do something. Catering to tradition isn't going to work b/c no one under 25 cares. It is too slow. I've got 4 boys 16 & under and none of them will watch more than a half-inning of baseball on TV (& not for lack of trying!).

Pirates v Cubs yesterday: 4 hours.

Combined, there were only 7 runs scored and 11 hits. However, also 15 walks, 23 strikeouts, and 15 pitchers used (Pirates used seven to pitch a two-hitter).

This is what you get when you follow sabermetrics like a Bible.

New Extra inning rules are dumb it cheapens the game. That actually makes the game longer. It did last year. Why are people in such a rush. MLB just needs to accept the fact that more people will tune into Football and Basketball.

As a Mets fan when i looked at the schedule and saw this was the only game canceled i thought "of course".

Way to stay relevant baseball, 1 afternoon game on Good Friday...

That right there is why Manfred and MLB are a joke. You wanna evolve the game how about a little common sense. Runner on 2nd rule is not it. I also dont understand this obsession about finishing the game at a certain time, you go to a game you gotta expect it to take a lot of time plan your day around it.

I dunno, when I was in my 20's I went to a game and sat in bleachers for 9 innings, it kept going most of the crowd left and I sat by first base until the 18th. It was fun at the time, but now when I think about that game its mostly no way in hell would I stay beyond midnight. The vast majority of the other 35,000 in attendance way back when concur with that assessment.
Baseball plays 162 games, changing a half dozen isn't cheapening & is not affecting anything other than duration of games. Anything that speeds up the game is better than what they've got now. Those lamenting changes - what about the fact that most games took 2-2.5hrs back in the day? Why aren't we clamoring until we get that back?!

Putting a runner on 2nd actually made games longer last year it did when the Yankees and Mets were playing each other. Picking up on pace of play and less mound visits I'm ok with. The crowds who leave also leave football games early, sure there are boring games and its a long season, by all means you gotta early leave early. I wouldnt get season tickets for the reason you stated staying past midnight. When I choose to go I plan my day around it, majority of the time I watch it on TV, I rather save the time and money.

Pitchers were mostly fungible assets back then. Before free agency, pay wasn't much more than 2-3x the average professional worker's salary, although plenty of doctors and lawyers made more than Sandy Koufax. It's not that the fans don't clamor for it, it's that owners won't let it happen. When you start paying pitchers 100s of millions, you protect those assets. So, shorter outings, more relievers. Add the lust for analytics and you've got less first ball swinging, more takes, longer counts, longer games.

Pitches per plate appearance:
2019 = 3.93
2010 = 3.82
2000 = 3.75
1990 = 3.61 (first year measured by Baseball-Reference)

So that's .32 more pitches per plate appearance. If the average WHIP is 1.33, then that's 11-12 more pitches per game on each side, so 22-24 more pitches per game, basically like playing well into the bottom of the 10th on a daily basis compared to 30 years ago.

Obviously there's more, such as batters time out of the box, longer between inning breaks for ads, etc. But the economics of the game is a huge part of it.

I'm as big of a baseball purist as anyone but the NL Dan Hurley is long overdue IMO. The image of Ching Ming Wang injuring his foot while running the bases and his career never being the same still stings. With the salaries some of these guys get now, it's not worth the risk. If Cole happens to pitch in an interleague game and has to bat, he shouldn't even bring a bat to the batters box.

No, you're obviously not based on your next thought.

The argument is whether or not NL should adopt the Dan Hurley. Obviously a Dan Hurley would have a better OPS than pretty much any pitcher. But it also changes the game. So, by saying they should makes you distinctly not a purist.

I still laugh at Cashman's whining about this. They're bases. Every player of Ching's generation grew up having to run them.

Then pitchers should be hitting at every level. It's crazy to have pitchers stop hitting in high school, all the way through college, through all the minor leagues, and then start again in the pros
