Living in the Denver-Boulder area in the 70's, the group Zephyr was quite prominent.

Candy Givens, Tommy Bolin, amongst others, were key members.

You short change Maryland in this post. The song was written in Gaithersburg, and the country road was Clopper Road, which back then was maybe the best way to get to West Virginia from DC.
