High school basketball is duck*ing awful to watch. Just bad, bad, bad basketball.

Every time I try, I feel sorry for college coaches who have to recruit these games.

Can you imagine the pure schlock a low-major college coach has to sit through? Egad.

KO sitting courtside for Calhoun. Calhoun looks great, but Mater Dei is too big and too talented for CTK it seems. #12 for CTK might want to consider some light jogging before next season...

Calhoun's threes remind me of Ben Gordon's - they hit clouds on the way up.

Watching the game, and my gosh, have both these teams missed a ton of bunnies.

With that said, I'm enjoying watching Omar's all around solid game. So far he's knocked down a deep 3, passed out a couple of sweet dimes off his dribble penetration, and scored on a couple of his drives through traffic...and just saw him block a shot.

I'm not sure what to think about his D and rebounding. He's not a big-hops guy, so I think he's going to have to work very hard on those two areas and excel via effort verses athleticism.

I agree with this al, but I think you're being overly positive regarding his defense. His EFFORT is not there. He is cherry picking and looking for blocks and steals. His team does not have the talent of Mater Dei, but he is the best player on the floor. He needs to lead with his defense, too. Otherwise, the original Calhoun will tear him to shreds and he'll watch others from the bench.

I do think that Jim and the staff will push him on that side of the ball; if so, he'll become quite a player.

I never said he was a good defender. I wrote:

In other words, D is not his strong suit and as you pointed out JC is going whip him into a better defender but it will take some time. Remember, Lamb was a like a revolving door early when he first arrived at UConn and has turned into a much better defender...not that he's a lock-down defender by any stretch of the imagination.

Needless to say, JC didn't recruit him because of his defense.

Mater Dei's guard Reinhardt is on fire with 34 points so far after 3 quarters and is giving Calhoun a tough time defensively

Reinhardt is a beast. I live in the area of Mater Dei and been following him for a bit. Has a lot of moves and can shoot from anywhere. Mater Dei is getting him open and Calhoun isn't really putting much effort in the defense end. Pretty sad to watch. Some shots in and out for Calhoun, but I don't like what I seeing from him. Just getting lit up by Katin.

This was the first time I've watched Calhoun and was not impressed. He was pretty invisible and was overshadowed by a number of other players today. He jacked up a few ugly shots. I was concerned when UCONN signed him that they signed him too soon and should wait to see what develops with other players. I know many on this board love him but I hope they made a good decision signing him. I will reserve judgement and hope for the best but if he shows the kind of effort for JC, he will have a rough time.

He played bad tonight, so he must suck. Archie Goodwin, who is a 5 star going to UK next year was thoroughly outplayed by Calhoun just last week so I can't imagine how terrible that kid must be.

JC has def lost his eye for talent..;)

Again, I am not saying the kid 'sucks' as some here would like to take it. This was the first full game I've seen him play and against great competition. I have seen highlight videos but those are contrived no matter who the player is.

However, in case some forget, for every Kemba JC has signed, there has also been a Hazelton, Deng, LeBlanc, Wiggins, Trice, Darius Smith, Scottie Haralson etc.

Given the limited scholarships I am only saying that I hope this kid ends up being a player as we have limited scholarships and don't have the luxury of finding out they were a bad fit after they get here. I don't expect a guy to play great every game but I do expect maximum effort.

You do realize that he is a top 30 recruit in the country right? He lights up every national tournament he plays in and now after 1 bad game we shouldn't have signed him? Some people on this board are nut jobs

i have watched omar several times on msgv. 3 of the 4 times he has been great. 1 time he looked a little off but still had the best game #'s wise. he is a great looking 2g. when he verbal commited i wrote in a thread about his form. he used to shoot the ball with 2 different forms. the weird 1 from 3 and a more normal looking flow from short. he now seems to have changed that to the 1 form that doesn't look as clean. it works for him so i'm not worrying about it. the kid has good court vision and goods ups for a 2g. he will come here and play right away(make the rotation), maybe start depending on the lineup JC goes with/who leaves.

Omar will be another great one for UConn. Today, Reinhardt was absolutely on fire and I t got inside his head a little and he had a subpar game. But, I also saw his game from last week against Morristown PA and Omar was outstanding. He will shoot near or above 40%, he has a great handle for his size and I predict he will have a similar impact next year to that of JLamb last year or the boatshow this year (8-12 ppg).
One thing he really needs to learn is how to stay in front of the player he is guarding on defense.

Here's one....when I say these videos are contrived, by their nature they show all positive highlight plays and you can't judge any player by them because they all players look great in them.

Yes, I understand. I have actually seen him play 4 games now against excellent competition. Tonight was his worst outing. I just hadn't been able to find a highlight video.

Omar looked good offensively in the first half, but Mater Dei was clearly a superior team led by Reinhardt who torched Omar and Christ the King with a barrage of shots from all over.

Other than there being no doubt that Reinhardt is a big time talent, you can't take much more from this game. Omar was forcing his shots in the 2nd half. Even though MD was a much better team CtheK completely stopped running any sets and it was all one-on-one crap.

As already pointed out, you simply can't take too much from watching one game.

Calhoun looks pretty good to me - great size, good athlete, nice looking shot.

Good thing JC doesn't run his picks past the geniuses here.

I'm sure JC will be happy to hear that you approve. If he had any doubts before, they are now gone. :)

The kid looks like he came out of a central casting call for a UConn wing.

Not sure what you nitwits are fretting about.
