Olympic team....5:45 on Friday....who makes it?

Bird, Catchings, Taurasi, Augustus, Fowles, Cash, Parker, Moore, Charles, McCoughtry, Whalen

When does the 12th player get named?
 
Yep there will be 2 more. Those were the only ones posted by USA basketball so far
 
Wow...no Griner. Shame on USA Basketball for choosing the Friday before the Final Four for making this announcement. She must be greatly disappointed.

Seems like a very dramatic development. Now you've got a lot of people waiting on pins and needles for that last spot, including Griner of course.

I can only think that they wanted to see her performance in the Final Four before seeing if she was really ready. If that's the case, they should never have said they were going to announce at this time. They should have pushed the entire 12 to a "later date".

I think this is a horrible way to handle this. Griner cannot help but be affected by this announcement. Quite frankly, I'm angry as this could affect her play.
 
or dont wanna make it a distraction while the game is televised... good move!
 
Should have either named all 12 members of the squad or none of them. Can't think of a good explanation for this action.
 
affect her play? she shouldn't be acting like she's a lock for a spot... she's a Baylor basketball player 1st, she needs to focus on Sunday's game.

I agree that when the ball goes up, it won't be on her mind at all, but if I were BG it would be nice to know one way or the other. And not just Brit, but Ashja, Dupree, whoever. Just a very messy way for the committee to have gone about things.

I think that for her play, it won't affect her. I think that for her Final Four experience it will have a dampening effect on the amount of enjoyment.

I think I am being misunderstood. I am not mad about her not being on the team; disappointed yes. I am mad that this disappointing announcement would come at a time when she should have nothing else to think about other than the Final Four and her overall enjoyment.
 
Sorry...let me recant. Yes, it could affect her play. Who knows how the subconscious works.
 
Any...congrats to UCONN on the 5 players. Each player's selection is well deserved and well earned. USA Basketball is lucky to have each of these women representing the county.

According to this article, only nine players were initially announced for the
2008 team, and incomplete rosters were also initially announced for the
2000 and 2004 teams as well. Looks like something they routinely do.

BG focus should be on Stanford... the Olympic plane doesnt leave before Tuesday.

I think it would be a silly distraction but now its may be even worse with all the speculation

Very interesting..............good perspective. The 11 of 12 announcement seemed very odd at the time, but obviously it's not.

This announcement of only 11 of the 12 is strange. Given that, I expect that Griner will be the 12th. Why are they not announcing the 12th?

Congrats to all. That looks like a great team. As we've said all along, some really good players did not make it.

My guess is that BG may have asked for a week before she gave her commitment - 'let me finish my college year and give me a day or two before I fully commit.' She is the only player for whom it would make sense to delay the announcement of the 12th player because of the FF. She has in the past been reluctant to join USA teams, and she might be holding back, rather than the committee.

Exactly. Especially the "College Player", picked and announced last as an Intern to the National Team, e.g. Christain Laetner, Rebecca Lobo, Candace Parker, etc.. Griner maybe unique, she is still a "College Player".

The team has 3 guards, Sue, Whalen and DT. Rest are wings forwards or post players. If I was Geno, I would want the 12th member to be a ball handling guard that can shoot and drive to the basket to get points or draw fouls. Sylvia Fowles can do everything that Griner can do, except she's two inches shorter. If Griner makes the team, she's probably plays in mop up time while a ball handling guard could be used anytime during the game.

I would put Augustus in that "guard" category. It may not be her natural position, but for this team, it looks like she will be playing that position regardless of whether they add another guard or not.

Those three guards are all ball handlers and Geno has played both Maya and Angel in the 'backcourt' with the USA team so I am not sure he is worried about that.
Besides - after this college season he is sick of playing four guards and wants to experiment with four forward/centers instead!!!:eek:

Were Lobo and Parker college players when selected to the Olympics? I thought that I read that the last time that a college player made it was in 1988?
 
I think the final selection will be a guard. Parker can pay post if Charles or Fowles were to get into foul trouble or get injured. I am really surprised to see Cappie omitted.
 
Lobo wasn't, because the Huskies won the title her senior year in 1995, so in the summer after that, 1996, she would have been out of college a full year.

She may have been named to the National Team in college, though.
